In this weeks video I take a two year old mare from untrained to riding in less then two weeks. I start this little mares training in the homesteads river and quickly advance to riding the trails. We also have an end goal in mind for this sweet mare, watch the video to see if we successfully meet that end goal! / rosafamilyfarm

I just want you to know that we care more about you guys than we do about a video fix every day or 2. If 1 a week is what's best for you, then do that. I quite like the way you do this in the water it's very gentle and from memory I think I read many yrs ago that the American Indians used to do something similar. The only thing I don't do with any horse or animal for that matter is pet them with a slap on the neck or back. I understand when you're splashing the water however whenever I touch a horse for reward or love it's always stroking or scratching them. I really don't think any animal understands when we pet them with a slap (altho I know it doesn't hurt them) I just believe that stroking or scratching is much nicer ❤

I had my boys working with our haflinger colts we walked them past the fire pit, flags, poles on the ground, gate work, tarps, buckets, newspaper in the wind, cars running, horns honking, almost anything they would encounter on a harness wagon trip.

@@homesteadhorsemanship Thanks Emery! At first I thought your name was Ann Marie. LOL! I think I saw somewhere that you said JR learned to train horses from his grandpa. So I had assumed that although his dad is a luthier, building and repairing stringed instruments, he is also a horse trainer, at least a retired one. Maybe I was wrong. What an interesting family! Because JR Said he's been around horses all his life, I made an assumption. Now I wonder if he learned (invented) the swimming thing on his own, or if he got the idea from his grandpa? If you can give me a super short 3 word answer, I would be so grateful, and so much better informed. But if you can't, of course I will understand. After all, you can't answer every question. So it's ok either way. Lots of love, from Canada. ❤❤❤

I really like your use of water as a place to 'start' young horses. It is much safer for both the horse and rider and horse gets immediate positive response to any show of willingness to follow your instructions. Love the long whip too as it has always been my favorite. It is like being given a very long arm so you can reward the horse for any attempt to follow your instructions. That is also the best way to insure that your horse never fears the whip as it is mostly used to reward good behavior. I find that the long whip also helps the horse learn to respond to the lightest possible touch. In the French Cavalry riding school that I attended when I was Becca's age we always rode with a whip - mostly to learn how to keep our hands still and 'light' at all times.

@@SILSAL67 No intention to put you down at all. I just want to be helpful. So it's spelled luthier. Pronounced like loo-thee-ay. Similar to Luther, as in the Lutheran Church. It's probably French in origin, and definately was originally Latin. The French pronunciation is loo-tee-ay. A luthier is one who builds and repairs stringed instruments. Nowadays that's mostly guitars, but in olden days France it would have been lutes. Thus, they were called a luthier.

Thanks for the videos. I think you have put together a good channel. How many hands was the palomino at the end? About as big as my old Tasco, who was 16.5. Quite a stretch for a 6'3" man. Trained him in mostly western show games, barrel racing and pole bending. He was sold to a local gal and she was able to get some nice trophies with him. The water training seem to be a good way to go in the sense it gives the horse more confidence in his/her trainer, in that "I won't hurt you, trust me" That is very important. On the first horse, Queenie I think, was that a snaffle bit you trained her on? I have seen D ring types but different than the one you used. One suggestion maybe, when in the barn filming, maybe use a head or collar mic, it was hard to hear what your were explaining with the echo of the barn. I really enjoyed the video. I've watched them all since your dad made the recommendation. Good luck with your channel. I like your approach to training. BTW, Tasco was a quarterhorse that was an ex-parade horse. Backing up was a good tool, got him over a fear of a bridge.

I worry that starting a horse at two is a recipe for disaster and breakdown. People have never been heavier than they are now in this country. There’s no guarantee that a young horse will be sold to a small framed woman or lighter weight man. I just don’t see the reasoning to get them riding before they’re truly mature.

No respect or connection for or with the horse. You said it, taking the power away from the horse. Poor horse, this looks like learned helplessness, not lack of fear. I can answer the mounting question. We mount from the left because everyone had to be right handed and the sword was therefore on your left. The sword would be in your way if you mounted from the right. And „everyone“ was right handed, because only witches were left handed. BTW you should train your horse the be tacked and mounted on both sides. Just in case you are injured. Or you are left handed with a sword 😊
