We are arriving at the homestead lifestyle late in our lives (59 and 61), but we home schooled our 5 children. I pray we influence our grandchildren with homesteading! God has just provided land for us to buy, and we will be building. I'm so excited to finally get started! Thank you for being part of the influence that convinced me we could do this. 🥰

Such wonderful life lessons that many kids don’t learn today. Our society coddles kids too much and then expects them to be good adults. Blessings to your family and thank you for sharing 🙏🙏

I loved hearing all their different perspectives, and seeing their own motivating factors - the do-ers, the nurturers, the builders, the developers, go-getters, the thinkers and the people-persons...homesteading's best crop will always be centered, realistic, helpful, capable, problem-solving kids.

There are many moments when a child is holding a frog or watching a butterfly emerge or lying back on a branch in the breeze where they have feelings of sustained wonderment, connectivity and presence. These moments are hugely beneficial in the development of a calm, reasonable personality. Such moments are more scarce in suburbia and even less so at school.

A sweet video all your kids are happy, and they love and respect homesteading, the skills they've learned are invaluable. In the future there could be so many local homesteads owned by Thomas kid's in Northern Idaho that they might have to rename the area to 'Thomasville' 🙂.

And you have the moments with your children that if it were a photo or video you would have missed the most important and raw bit of their lives and yours. But your kids will know who took a picture at a moment they remember and why. It’s alright to let your shadow have a selfie. Thank for sharing your children’s moments when they say something like “… and look at who we have become after all these years.” May they stay together.

I don't completely "homestead" in the context of raising all our own food on a large piece of land. But, when I was laid off from my job, and with a disabled son... (one of 5 children) who will not be leaving home or working to support himself; we transitioned our skills to optimize cost savings so I could stay home and function as his caretaker. Gardening, poultry care, cheese making, canning, meat butchery, animal husbandry, dehydrating, baking from scratch, fermentation... these were all skills I've transitioned into after the other children left our home. I see them struggling with life management. It's very stressful for them when they fail to formulate a plan that captures all of what they have set for a goal. Sometimes they don't even recognize that they have set a goal that needs planned and executed. Homesteading forces you to set goals, plan ahead, pay attention to resources and impacters (supplies, weaknesses like that sputtering tractor or hole in the fense, weather, weeds, etc.), and pull your life together in a thoughtful and organized fashion. I'm married to a Marine and there is a.lot of "improvise adapt and overcome (overdo, in my husband's case)" in a homesteading lifestyle. You can do a lot on an acre.... but, we've also helped neighbors attend to their livestock and gardens. As a professional in the corporate/industrial world for many years... I did all the time management workshops and training. But what they teach you is how to use other tools to effectively remind you of your short term goals and responsibilities. What I've learned from this lifestyle is how to use my brain to set a goal and make a plan that incorporates potential failures as part of the plan. My children are beginning to see this from a different vantage point and are impressed but reluctant because of the effort they see being put in. I think that changes once they have children of their own. God bless you and keep you. You have an amazing family.

This was really good and I have to say you have very amazing, well-rounded children who are going to do so much better in our world, than many because of the closeness they have, with earth, life and even death. I know respect is learned for everything along the way. With everyone so disconnected from the planet, much through electronics, the frequencies in the cities from all the cell phone towers, the fake food they sell everywhere, the fluoride in the water and chemtrails in the sky, is it any wonder why everyone is sick or has mental health issues. Your way is the right way.

Have you thought about container gardening? You can grow a lot of things in tubs or totes. I'm alone on an acre, mid 70s but in pretty good shape for my age. Not as strong and not as much stamina as when I was younger. Best to you. ❤

Find a community in your town that would love your Grandpa and Grandma advice and loving care. You in turn will be cared for as well. So many people more a days don't have sweet grandparents or parents and so your valuable care will mean so much to them. It may take awhile but look for " community gardens" or 4-H clubs that welcome the older generation. You will be blessed !
