A couple notes from my own avocado FD-ing experience. Avocados have oil in them so they will go rancid over time. For that reason I don't package them for long-term storage. I'd consider them to be for short term storage only for that reason. I tried blending them into a powder and the heat from the blender actually made them be mush because of the heat/oil. If you want a powder, I'd go with the bag and rolling pin method. I actually put mine in the freezer for storage after freeze drying just because I don't use them all that fast and I don't want the oil to turn on me. I have a few in my fridge right now waiting to be processed in the freeze dryer. I only use them in smoothies and this is perfect for that. I also freeze dry my berry and spinach blend and Greek yogurt for smoothies.
@juliabrown5948 Жыл бұрын
Great tips! Question about your FD another. Do you FD all the components separately (berries, spinach, yogurt) and then rehydrate and combine, or do you FD them as a mixture? I'm wanting to make smoothie packs for my kids and I asked can't figure out the best way to do it and still have a smoothie texture, not a flavored milk texture, if that makes sense
@mrdeleoco8702 Жыл бұрын
Hey what a great idea! dried avocado for smoothie , creaminess I assume? like a banana would do but not super sweet. The fresh ones sure do it well but i never have seen the dried one.
@Jodi_W Жыл бұрын
@@juliabrown5948 I run into complications because different family members want different things in their smoothies. My husband doesn't want yogurt but I want yogurt, for instance. So I tend to FD things separately just for that reason. That also leaves the individual items available for other uses. I blend the mixed berries so they FD better and can be powdered easier. That powder is beautiful in a jar! Having said that, for convenience for MYSELF I am planning to make complete smoothies and then FD them. I may leave out the avocado for the reasons stated - which may be overly cautious but avocados aren't cheap so I'm going to do what I think preserves them the longest. I make a pretty complex smoothie because it's often my only 'meal' of the day so I put a lot of stuff in it for nutrition. Since it's for your kids, I'd make up what they like and FD it all together to make it easy for them without having to measure. It may take some trial and error to get the consistency you want. I'd start with less water and work up to the thickness that's preferred. You can also add in some chopped ice at the end.
@Jodi_W Жыл бұрын
@@mrdeleoco8702 I actually use the avocado for the nutritional value. I tried eating them on toast and I just didn't like the texture and flavor. I'm a very picky eater so I have to sneak good foods in on myself. 😄 It does make it creamier, though! Bananas don't agree with me so it is kind of my substitute that way, too. I use some honey for sweetness (not in the FD version) and may try some stevia to see how that compares for the FD version. The honey is better immunity-wise but not something I'll FD. At the time I worked up my smoothie 'recipe' I was not eating much at all so it was my main/only nutrition of the day. I cram what I can in there so it's a very dense drink.

I started off with an Excalibur food dehydrator. Then over a year ago my husband bought me the medium harvest right freeze dryer. I freeze dry so many different things. I just made some posole soup and I canned it. I took the cabbage, radishes, and cilantro and freeze dried them. That way when we eat the posole, we have the toppings for it. I also freeze dry the rice that you have to have. 😉Now I’m going to freeze dry my limes also for the soup. Thank you so much for sharing about the limes. One hint that I can give as far as freeze drying. Is to empty your trays out onto a piece of parchment paper. I probably do it 18 inches or a little larger. Then I can easily fill my jars or my mylar bags without it getting all over the counters. It makes life a little easier. I also don’t turn my freeze dryer off until I am sure that my food in the freeze dryer is completely done. Sometimes there’s still cold spots that need to be finished off. If it does get turned off, I just put them in my Excalibur food dehydrator to finish it off. Thank you again for your content.😊

Can you use other dehydraters?
@theresap3467Ай бұрын
More like smart rather than lucky! 😆 I may have thrown away the equivalent cost of a dehydrator in rotten avocados over the years. 😐 Great video!

Oh a freeze dryer would be wonderful. Just the thought of preserving avocados is so exciting. I love them and can not eat a whole one, so something like this would be so nice for me. Cilantro is delicious. I would have never thought of freeze drying limes also. Goodness it all looks beautiful.

QUESTION: To make "powder" from freeze-dried citrus, do you throw them in a blender (I have a coffee grinder that would work great for this) UNPEELED? I would think that would make the powder taste bitter but not sure

Thanks! Glad to know avocados can be freeze dried, and he other ingredients for guacamole as well. I think 2023 will be the year we will finally buy a dryer.

Another trick to getting your vacuumed lids off is to use the edge of a table spoon. Run it between where the glass threads and jar lid start to meet and you can easily pry the lids off with no damage.

SLICING citrus preserves it for adding to beverages and fits more in a container for storage as the rings lay upon one another.

I think freeze dryers are awesome but they are very expensive. I saw someone do watermelon and that was pretty cool considering there's not many ways to preserve melon.

@farmerchick3040 You can simply freeze avocado. Lots of ideas on this in the comments. 😊
