If you want a squash that is fairly similar to zucchini, look into upo squash (bottle gourd). They are insane here! I'm in Manoa and planned one of those plants. Out vines and climbs all over the place. My vine was probably 30 ft end to end. It also put out a lot of fruit. I fertilized every other week and had to keep a steady stream of compost on it. It produced like crazy and had no disease or insect pressure. It was amazing! The fish side is that it will take over any where it can climb. It was growing all over my trellises and up my giant mountain Apple tree.

Here in So Cal I can and do grow almost everything but tropicals. And what do I mostly eat? Imported tropicals! 😅 Really helpful video, as it’s important to grow what WANTS to grow in your own micro climate. Excited to find your channel!!! I live on kaua’i and I’ve spent the last 4-5 years experimenting with which varieties do best in my garden. Love your screen house… those dang pickleworms are the fricken worst. I have great success with the kilo Napa cabbage. They regularly get to be over 5lbs! I also grow a lot of winged bean, long bean, Roma beans, okra, leeks, kale, peppers… and success with cukes hydroponically. Omg zucchini. Fail every time.

@@dnmckay honestly I just take the seeds from the Costco bell peppers and sprout them. I have the most success with peppers using the kratky method in 5 gallon buckets. I feel like I have a problem. Banks is here because they’re usually exposed to the humidity in the stores and they just don’t germinate well. So I try to use and find fresh seeds whenever possible.

Thanks for representing the east side on you tube! I’m gardening in Hilo at about 500’ elevation. I’ve got great snap peas right now, “magnolia” variety. Also bush green beans “jade”. Japanese cucumbers “suyo long” have done well. “Sun king” broccoli works well for me.. no luck with zucchini or bell peppers!

Slugs tend not to crawl up tomatoes cause of the hairs, they don’t like herbs much either but my buddy got RLWD from cilantro that was harvested and left out in a container under a tarp where the slugs showed up. Just be very careful and wash and inspect when eating raw.

I would get a bigger container. If you have a Costco membership, swing by their bakery and ask if they have buckets they're throwing out. I usually will get a free 2 or 3 gallon bucket, which is perfect for growing lettuce (hydroponically or with soil if you make drainage holes)
