My wife and I bought a house that had a stand of _Bambusa oldhamii_ in the back yard, about 50 feet tall. It’s true that clumping bamboo spreads slowly and predictably, but it does spread. New shoots keep emerging at the outer edge of the stand, and I’m not aware of any method of stopping that process. If you cut away the new shoots, you’re left with stumps and then more new shoots come up beyond the stumps, and so the clump expands, little by little. I finally had to remove the entire clump - a very difficult task - because it was threatening to block access to a gate. I miss many things about the bamboo, but I’m glad I took it out.

Good point, it does have a diameter that should be respected. Probably 40-50 ft.

Friends neighbors planted running bamboo and it ran down the hill and invaded my friends land. Friend had the entire bamboo leveled with sharp machetes, arduous and timely. After that he mowed the sprouts and little by little fought it back.

Sounds like the experience most people have with bamboo. All they need to know is im whether it’s a running or clumping kind. Hopefully this video will help a few people to not make a big mistake

We had running bamboo that went into our neighbors yard and was coming up through the driveway .Not easy to get rid of. Finally did and got the clumping and they are very good

Sometimes people have to learn the hard way, I just wish instead of discounting bamboo completely they'd learn about clumping bamboo

We have 17 acres and I'm going to plant some running bamboo in a couple of areas for my sheep. I'm also contemplating groves of clumping bamboo. I'm not worried about invasive because I also raise pigs. I'm in Zone 6 in Canada. Any suggestions?

I’ll look that up, send me your email?

@HomesteadinHawaii That would be great. Should I send it to you on your website? If so, what should I put on the Subject line so recognize it? Some clumping ideas would be good too.

How can you determine if you have running or clumping bamboo? I just got black bamboo, and I heard there are many species of it.

I planted bamboo to feed my goats. I am in east Kentucky, I have not found a clumping variety that is recommended for my area. My biggest problem is keeping the goats out of the stand till it gets well established, they want it NOW. 😜

What is your perspective on Buddha Belly bamboo on spreading?
@HomesteadinHawaii6 ай бұрын
Buddha Belly is a clumper, it's not invasive

I have a 3500m2 lot in Bohol, Philippines. The perimeter is about 250 linear metres (300 yards or so). A fence or a wall would be too expensive, particularly as the lot is quite steeply sloping. I'm hoping that you might advise me of a species of bamboo that I can use as a hedge, maybe 3m (10 feet tall) that won't be invasive and won't look too scruffy after a few years.
@HomesteadinHawaii6 ай бұрын
The one i mentioned in the video, Bambusa multiplex could be a good candidate. It doesn’t get too tall, it’s a clumping bamboo so it won’t get out of control. You’ll just have to plant a few 8’ apart to get a good hedge
@HomesteadinHawaii6 ай бұрын
You should maintain them every now and then though
@thechriswhewell6 ай бұрын
@@HomesteadinHawaii I'm glad you suggested that because it was one of a dew that I had picked out, and one that's pretty commonplace in the Philippines from what I have read. Thanks!

Not getting notices from KZbin? I think you have to hit the bell as well. If you're talking about my email newsletter, I only send it out once a month at the beginning of the month.
