I planted my Buddha Belly clumping bamboo when I first moved to Florida 10 years ago. Needless to say, it's now magnificent but it's only through watching your videos that I'm finally learning to manage and use it, instead of just letting it do its thing. My yard is rather lush and purposely overgrown because that's what the native birds and wildlife seem to like best. My bamboo is a huge part of that and I really want to expand the bamboo because I have zero privacy in the back yard and the bamboo really solves that problem. Thanks again for helping to educate me about bamboo.

I don't live in the tropics...I live in southwest Virginia in the Appalachians and I grow 3 varieties of bamboo. Its been planted since 2015 and in the past two years has taken off. I really appreciate all of your videos. Bamboo is everything!!!!

My bamboo surives cold temperatures, here in Virginia. It's definitely being used, all around my land. I actually lable some of mine with the year it came up. Mainly when they are nice looking ones I want for future art or projects. Some I will just carve the year. "24". Best to keep, it simple. Hard enough to keep it under control! We have the invasive running type 🙄 so we look for every reason to use it. 😅 When preserved right and at the proper age, it's very strong.

Defintely, and there is so much you can do with bamboo. I wish I had running bamboo sometimes, I need more!!

Although it's a lot of work, start putting some kind of mark on your new culms as the appear. Do this every year and you then take the guess work out of the situation. I have clumps in different areas of the garden that have the same age of culm that look quite different. It's taken four years but now I've got an exact age for the ones that matter.

Would the way to tell age differ in a dry climate(ie socal)? Trying to figure out how to gauge age if lichen and moss aren't there
@HomesteadinHawaiiАй бұрын
You would probably have to mark them as new shoots comeup then, but if you look closely, you can see the age. New bamboo has sheaths, old bamboo will look older

Hey mate, I just cut a heap of bamboo it’s about 10 years old and the average height is 20 meters at least, but I can’t treat it for another couple of days, so it will be sitting for over 48 hours. I want to use it for arts and crafts so should I be worried that I’ve already stuffed the treating process?
@HomesteadinHawaii3 жыл бұрын
First off, age of the culm matters. You want 4 yo culms from an at least 8 year old clump. Some of those culms you cut could be just a year old. Ideally you treat right away. Do you have borax and boric acid or access to saltwater? Do not leave it much longer than 48 hrs to effectively treat
@BAMBOOM2021 Жыл бұрын
About how many new shoots do you get per clump every year? And why did that shoot die?
@HomesteadinHawaii Жыл бұрын
I get about 5-10. Sometimes they die because of fertility. More you feed the more they grow
