I was sure Time and Space would dominate as I think in canon there were more of those than any other. That these are considered more important than any other. The results for Time are as expected, but space surprised me.

Yeah, technically Space and Time are the two requirements for a session to begin. Since the Alpha kids were just an extention of the Beta session, they still had Space and Time players with Jade and Dave

There are aspects who are rarely shown in the comic itself, Doom is the most egregious example.Even a victim of this, the Life aspect, got a good sample with Jane.(I miss canon Jane). Which means that people know less how the powers, function and how the exercise of such aspects work.

agree, i find it interesting particularly acknowledging popular/sensical view of aspects especially in life/doom since they can be interpreted quite true to their name. I find it especially interesting here the equal lack between hope/rage players for the same reason. as someone who loves analysing classpects, boy *howdy* are those two a nightmare, if not just because most examples are unclear destructive classes. in tandem with the fact they dont have even as much "title" appeal with those vague interpretations as doom/life, i didnt imagine it at first but it. does make sense! next to doom they are incredibly difficult to analyse, and unlike doom they dont have as much instant appeal (plus the stereotypes of the two aspects can be quite polarizing to character development and sway more nuanced characters) (i would also be interested to see how many purpleblood rage players there are...) even if its not a noteworthy divide in this sample, i think this sort of analysis into character creation decisions is quite interesting & worth exploring! if not to then go and make the most niche one to feel special... but really it is interesting to see these statistics and what might have led to them being what they are. ohhh i will go on forever i just love this stuff

As a math-autistic (my highest AP test was a 5 on the statistics AP test) Homestuck who was reading it back when it was still being released in its OG form and experienced/was a fan when many of the events mentioned in the iceberg shown and with homestuck being a special interest of mine, I just want to say kuddos on this school project/vid. I just wanted to say, all of your art and editing look great! What's your fan adventure called? And I hope your teacher gave you a high grade. It really doesn't matter, but to be pedantic, characters don't only receive aspects or powers after reaching god tier; they have them through the entire story, or at least after starting SBURB. In important moments, characters like John and Terezi used their aspects without god tier, and all characters are influenced by their aspects throughout the story in terms of both personality and their metanarrative arcs. God tier just seems to give control and strength.

If you want a proper session you need to somehow find someone that has the space aspect without knowing for sure if they’ll have it. Certain aspects are just story crucial and the game of SBURB will fail without them. SBURB is horribly designed, worst beta release ever

Something I'd like to point out that may have had an effect on the scores is how the aspects "canonically work" through the troll sign quiz and how it's scoring works. It's a lot of math stuff but to simplify you get a certain amount of points for the aspect most tied to an answer, half the points for the opposite aspect, half of half for the neighboring aspects of the answers aspect and 3xhalf for the neighbors of the opposite. This is to account for overlap in theming (Time and Doom both have some level of death theming for example). By the end, if you have tied between aspects, the test has a bias scale for what you get given ranging from more to least (Time, Space, Heart, Mind, Hope, Rage, Light, Void, Breath, Blood, Life, Doom). Makes sense when (if Sburb was real), you'd need Time and Space to be able to finish the game and more Time to cause a reset if the case of a lack of a space player. I feel like this may have had an effect because, at least from my experience, people like to make oc's that reflect some part of themselves. So with it being more likely that a not insignificant portion of the fanbase primed to be Time, and some of the fan favorites being Time, it'd make sense to have a bias of Time aspected OC. That and Time powers are just really cool. (Look me in the eye and tell me you wouldn't want to pet/ride a dinosaur) Thank you for reading my TED Talk!

Both rage and hope seem to by tied to delusions (apart from jake), and people often like their OC's to have common sense, which is why hope and rage seem to by slightly less popular than the others. The main doom player (Sollux) is sane (compared to the other trolls), smart and a powerful psychic, which explains why people make doom OC's despite doom not really being explained.

2:38 I guess to look at it from a qualitative angle since you handled the quantitative side, I'll try not to spoil things and be more vague with details. All this is just based on my interactions with the fandom at large so there's definitely going to be some bias towards the 2014-2018 era. Time makes sense from the reasons you said. Space being so low is a bit odd but it definitely doesn't get as "flashy" representation power wise. Heart being around the middle checks out since I feel like what it represents does appeal a lot to the OC creating types but also drops because of only having one notable character who's pretty divisive nowadays. Mind is sorta the opposite since it gets a really beloved character but not much elaboration. Hope being the lowest is a little weird, since it does get some important characters though both of them feel generally disliked or have a general feel of apathy around them from what I've heard, and it's one of the less concrete aspects in terms of what it does other than literal Hope. Rage is the same, but it's the least explained aspect and gets a character which is either a favorite or least favorite, no in between. Also it's generally hard to spin Rage as a good thing from what I've seen, it does have positive elements but those aren't what immediately comes to mind when someone says an OC has the Rage aspect. Light and Void are basically the same case, there's a popular character who has it and it gets good elaboration, and they evoke some good imagery without too much effort. Breath is the first main character's aspect and has easy manifestations for both the literal meaning and figurative ones, makes sense why its popular. Blood is carried by having a beloved character with it, even though he doesn't directly bring it up much, but isn't really explained at all but can be intuited. I'd say that it gets a bump up due to "edginess points" which also applies to Time and Doom (maybe Void?). Life is basically the same case as Heart, but with more than 1 notable character having it, also its really intuitive to see what it means/does. Doom is the biggest beneficiary from "edginess points", since its not really explained at all but everyone kinda gets Doom's deal by the name and being the opposite of Life. It has one notable character who's pretty popular. Overall, the results mostly check out from a Fandom history and general appeal angle, with Hope, Space, and Doom being sort of oddities which can get explained away but not fully.

this was really interesting!! :D especially with thinking about how when me and my friends made homestuck ocs we got aspects assigned to them through the extended zodiac quiz, which im pretty sure has an uneven distribution of results. (take this with a grain of salt) but im pretty sure ive heard the test is more likely to give you an aspect like time or space, as theyre required for a successful session, while aspects like life and doom are the hardest to get :3 great video!!

Great video. I didn't understand half the math in this video (in spite of how math-oriented my high-school years were...) but that was legit interesting. I'm also surprised Hope was at the bottom. Even though Hope is a difficult Aspect to grasp, I'd have expected that the powers we see being used from the two Hope players in canon Homestuck would have at least convinced some people to make their fankid or fantroll Hope-bound. I wonder how many people classpect their characters from their personality and narrative arc rather than the other way around. I am one of them, but that doesn't say much.

i have a friend with over 100 fantrolls and i actually did X^2 tests to see if there were any significant aspects and/or classes!! this was like a year ago and they have so many more but i found that there was a strong bias for seers and doom players!

Additonally, the official Extended Zodiac Aspect quiz (in which the highest score any aspect can get is 4) has a set order of aspects to follow when resolving ties. Time is the first of these (eg. always wins ties), so if someone wanted to use the Extended Zodiac to classpect their character for them, there is a MUCH higher chance of them getting Time.

I guess the closest I have is my classpect Knight or Prince of Life, I do have OC's but I made 12 troll OCs one for every class and aspect so it doesn't count for "which is more common", I imagine the aspects of the original four John, Rose, Dave and Jade are the most popular, Breath, Light, Time and Space

There's an actual order to the aspects, (Which the table is laid out in), but the OC order doesn't match the order and I find the fascinating, plus I believe the 4 most important aspects for a session to be Time, Space, Life and Blood, and while Time is the highest and Life is pretty high, the fact that Space and Blood were in the bottom half was interesting Edit: I feel like a much larger sample, accounting for people like me, who do sets of 12 characters (1 for each aspect), would be interesting

0:51 "Upon ascending to God Tier, each character is asigned an aspect..." Every character already has a classpect, regardless if they are God Tiered. 4:35 "Not only is Time essential..." It isn't. Only Space is essential for a successful sburb session. Time is only essential for performing a scratch. 4:41 "Some of the most adored characters, Dave Strider and Aradia Megido..." Ok this is just straight up personal bias, but how dare you not mention Caliborn. Otherwise, great video, was surprised that Time is more popular than Space tbh. edit: okay people, do you are have stupid? I mean that I'm personally biased towards the fact that Caliborn didn't get a mention in the most adored section, while he, in my opinion, should have.
