If it were not for the lack of Yoruba history being taught academically across Yorubaland (due to standardised revised and amalgamated curriculum), slavery, colonialism and distraction by Igbos to the East of Yorubaland, with their wars, that killed millions of their wretched people, that they still use to hold Nigeria hostage, the Yoruba conglomerate from Benin, Togo, Nigeria and across the globe would be a marvel. We need to build bridges amongst all the descendants of Oduduwa. Betty Thomas the killing of twins occurred in southern Nigeria among the calabar people. In western Nigeria among the Yoruba people twins have been adored and worshipped since time immemorial we even have a God of twins (Orisa Ibeji). Fun fact in Yoruba philosophy we believe the second twin is older than the first because it is the second( elder) who sends his/her sibling first into the world to taste and see if it is good enough for him to come also. I believe this story evolved perhaps because naturally twin births are more complicated and a lot of times the birth of the second baby is a bit more prolonged and difficult compared to the first, so it seems the second child( elder) is contemplating whether to arrive or not.

We are extremely proud of it, that is why till date, we effectively conquered every region of the world that enslaved us, such as Brazil, almost all of South America and even the UK where we have a large community of migrants. Our religion is the 5th largest in the world and we have the only culture and religion that invaded anywhere in the world and dominate it without shedding single blood or forcing it on anyone. Almost the whole of South Anerica today, worship our Orishas, under the guise of Santeria or Catholicism and after independence or slave abolishment, openly practiced it. We are gentle but very proud peoples.

Effemmzy Yeah, but that's got to do with Europeans (slavery mainly) and poverty in Nigeria leading to immigration. I'm a Nigerian in the UK and when it comes to relevance there's actually a variety of Nigerian of ethnic groups represented even though Yorubas in the UK are so many. Likewise, it's not that way in the US yet the non-Yoruba Nigerians are doing well and dominating, even though they are lower in numbers compared to Yourbas in the UK. Thanks for this video! I would like to note that the people who raided Ile-Ife were not the same people as Igbos in Eastern Nigeria. The Ugbos were an an ancient people who lived in the periphery of Ife, not in Eastern Nigeria. The only plausible people who some say are descendants of Ugbo people is the Ugbo clan of the Ilaje subgroup. The Ilajes are a subgroup of Yoruba divided into 4 clans, one of which is Ugbo. Also the Nimrod or Mecca myth was concocted by some muslims who try to tie Yoruba mythology with the Quran. These claims are not backed by scholars so there is no need to mention them. Also there are Yoruba natives as well in Togo, specifically in Atakpame.

Fikk37 you’re wrong ! Yorubas migrated to present day Nigeria , the Ilaje people you speak of were aboriginal to ile-ife before Yoruba took over their land on arrival. Fulani being the first settlers in Nigeria kept records of people who migrated to Nigeria , they were able to do so because they were Islamized and had Arabic knowledge. It’s in the “infakul Mansouri” that Yorubas migrated from Canaan land, according to the narrations of the Sultan of Sokoto to Hugh Clappperton a British missionary . The error the Sultan made was to claim were were kindreds of a Nimrod , no ! We were subjects to Nimrod when we lived in Canaan land long ago. We migrated with our relatives the Ewe in present day Togo, Benin and Ga-Dangme people of Ghana. They have the records and keep it till date. We are Hebrews who have lost our identity. Sultan of Sokoto was right about where we migrated from but was wrong about our true origin. Back in the days, subjects saw themselves as kindred, brother, sons of their tributaries so we can justify the reason why the Sultan of a Sokoto called us kindred of Nimrod.

Blake Griffiths We are more likely kindred of Nimrod, because we migrated way before the emergence of the Hebrews and Judaism. Logic would suggest that if we were not post-Judaism, we would have brought with us monotheism. But if we migrated to escape persecution for our polytheism, it would make sense that Yoruba cultural identity would be as distinct as it is today. Evidence of Judaism not appearing within either Yorubaland cultures, or diaspora, would suggest that our knowledge of Judo-Christian-Islam beliefs systems, didn't not appear until after colonisation and the translation of the Bible by Ajayi Crowther, etc. We are not Hebrews or Jews, but the probability that we escaped persecution from them, and enjoyed protection from the Sultan of Sokoto, against marauders from Dahomey, the former Aborigines of Yorubaland, Nupe, the Arab expansion that subjugated our Cousins from Nubia to Sudan, and the aggressive progression of Islam etc, is highly plausible.

Blake Griffiths There is a judeo-centric perspective with this resource, understandably because Judaism is the framework for most of these kinds of topics. My advice is to think beyond this framework, and try to appreciate that the origins of the Yoruba (our people) does not require association with the Hebrew. My argument is that the Yoruba lineage, is older than what was to become the Hebrew Isrealites.

Growth pains. Three major regions is NG were thus associated prior: Yorubas are more alligned with the groups to the west of their already Western location, such as the Fon, and the Ewe -- in Benin and Togo. The Igbos were more alligned with groups even more east of their already Eastern location -- other eastern Nigerians, and the Cameroonians, and the Hausas have large numbers of their group alligned even further North of their already Northern location, in the country of Niger and in other parts of the sahel. We three, were joined and then agreed to use the adjoining to collectively take the country from the British. We are still growing lol
