Brandon Lahman that sounds fun. How long did that take? Just curious
@brandonlahman79456 жыл бұрын
AroundIndiana It was called the Madrac classic and took a week or so. I was 13 or 14 at the time... Going through all the locks.. Kayaking through massive barges... Camping at each stop for the night... The river was as wide as a lake at certain points and when a storm hit the white caps were 2 or 3 feet tall. It was quite an adventure and so cool to be greeted by Huckleberry Finn when I reached Hannibal....

I was lucky enough to visit Hannibal in the 7th grade, and even though it was over 20 years ago, it's still one of the most memorable trips I've ever taken. I loved the museums and the riverboat, but I enjoyed the Haunted House on Hill Street the most. It had such a quaint, old-timey charm. The wax figures were definitely creepier than anything in the haunted house. Another awesome video from an outstanding channel.

Hannibal? Heck Yeah! My old stomping grounds when I was growing up. And You found the Dinette too! How amazing was that tenderloin sandwich and Root Beer? A trip to that area for mark Twain fans, is not complete without a trip to Florida Missouri and seeing the actual cabin Sam Clemens was born in. About 35 miles or so south west of Hannibal near Paris Missouri.
The root beer sign actually spins at the Dinette, but it hasn't done it in a long time.

I was born in Hannibal, but Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) was born near Florida, MO in Ralls County. While Mark Twain is the most famous person to have lived in Hannibal and many of his books were based on his boyhood in Hannibal, there are other people from Hannibal who became famous. Margaret Tobin, who went to Denver, CO, and married a wealthy miner with the last name of Brown. Margaret's nickname was Molly. Yes, Molly Brown, the Titanic survivor, was from Hannibal. Cliff Edwards was born in Hannibal, but you might not know who he was. If you watched the Disney television series, you heard Cliff's voice, he was the voice of Jiminy Cricket. He sang "When You Wish Upon a Star". By the way, Jiminy Cricket was a swear word that was popular in the midwest.

I've lived in the Hannibal area my whole life, at Mark Twain Senior high, which is in Center, you can still find his books in our libraries. Mr. Twain is still mentioned in our history classes and everything. I love how popular our little town is, although the traffic is really congested through the northern part. Downtown is where it's at though, gotta love it. Christmas is a wonderful time to visit downtown cause all the shops are decorated and then Broadway goes all out with the parade. Usually around the 4th of July, we also have Tom Sawyer Days, which involves a carnival and lots of other activities and things to do and see, the parade is great as well haha.

Cool, Jacob, you're in my neck of the woods. If you go north from Hannibal to kahoka, mo, there's Athens state park north of kahoka on highway 81. It was the site of one of first and most northern battles of the civil war. It has several restored houses from the period, including the thome-benning house that had a cannibal go thru it during the battle, and the hole is still there and can be seen. The house is completely restored and furnished with pieces from the civil war. My. Scout troop when I was assistant scoutmaster excavated the ruins of the old general store and the glasses and plate fragments we found are on display

I have stopped by here every year since the 80s on my way to Quincy Illinois with my grandmother. We would always stop to get salt water taffy. You missed a few key spots that might not have been open while you were there. One is an antique shop I believe and it has several different miniature window-box almost claymation like depictions from his stories. and then there is engine Joe's home that has a quirky little haunted house inside of it and a small wax museum of Samuel Clemens and his family. To further confuse you Samuel Clemens use the name Mark Twain for his writing and yes you're right Tom Sawyer is based on him. There's the caves and Becky Thatcher's home. The light house was also written about in his stories. I can't tell you how many times I have been in all of those museums it's ridiculous😂😂 thank you for sharing this gem! don't forget about all the caves up and down Missouri those are pretty awesome too

Twain was a widely traveled person and went or worked in dozens of places from his birthin Florida, Missouri,his youth in Hannibal, his pursuit of life as a riverboat pilot,his adventures in writing and publishing,to his lecture tours to save himself from bankruptcy, he spent time in St Louis, NYC,Philadelphia, Hawaii,Nevada and Californiagold and silver. Fields and even visited Egypt and Africa before dying in Redding CT and being buried inElmira. Three towns have the geatest claim to him- Hannibal wfere he spent his youth and claim his small rivertown characters like Tomand Huck and Elmira and New Haven where ho loved most of his grown up live and raised his family!All 3 towns have majorTwain attractions and all deserve to have them. They all were important in his life at different stages of his life.

Am sorry to contradict but, Mark Twain lived here in Elmira New York. He married here, wrote many of his books here, had his children here, and he and his family are buried here in Woodlawn Cemetery. This area is called "Mark Twain country". Mark Twain also had a home in Connecticut where he lived for a short time. The Cory Farm is still owned by Mr. Twain's descendants. His Study was moved from the Farm and placed on the campus of Elmira College. The fence that once surrounded the Langdon home, his wife's home, is located at the college. Mr. Clemens may have lived in Hannibul, but his home was in my home town.
