There are so many great ideas and things to see in this video that you just can't absorb it all in one or two "watchings". I am 60 years old and I can figure out how to organize things on my own, but seeing what Doug has done has shown me ways to organize that I would never have thought of. I share Doug's thoughts on being clean, neat and organized in my garage and seeing what he has done is very inspiring to see it all in completed form. This video should be required to be viewed by all us garage guys on You Tube. I have shared this video with all my friends and we have all discussed it amongst ourselves. And then your other video "Garage Makeover - The Hardest Part Is Getting Started" is the next logical step in implementing some of the ideas from this video. This video is so sophisticated. It's almost like garage philosophy. I've never heard anyone with such clear and precise explanations about the process we men go through in the shop environment. Especially at 8:40 when he explains that you enter your shop, then spend 15 minutes searching for a tool--then repeat the process again the next day. I have two speed squares and both of them have vanished somewhere in my shop, and I've been looking for 2 days now, wasting at least 30 minutes. His point about time wasted searching for tools is so important! What an inspiring video, and how dumb I feel now for not having a place for my speed squares.

Wow, absolutely JAM packed with great info, with detail, detail, detail . I know the fella making the video made the comment about how it’s a longer video than usual, but it was WAY WORTH IT. There’s so many great video’s out there but this is exceptional because of the speaker’s ability (and WILLINGNESS) to explain in great detail (such as the specifics about the ‘swing away grinder’). (I know this is going to sound silly but he said things I said a hundred times in my previous business, which I wasn’t able to implement, and was considered a ‘pain in the …’ because I wanted to know where everything was … those $10 and $100 tools and expendables x 100 can make or break a business). Very thankful to have seen this. PS: A demonstration of the ‘tool box foam cutting’ would be appreciated. (My uncle, from early 1920’s did something similar but with what was available … paint … He laid the tools on a wood board and painted over everything to show when a tool was missing … I inherited a lot of those green painted tools and cherish them to this day).

Hinged grinders is my favourite hack. Grinders take up a lot of room (annoyingly at the front of the bench) and the hinge system is a great idea to keep the front of the bench clear and also make cleaning easy. My second fav would be the trailer hitch vices because of the same space-saving reasons (although the grinders win for the added ease of being able to clean under them).
@JSmedic13 жыл бұрын
@Daniel G I like that hinged grinder set-up, too. It'll allow me so much extra space.
@cockerjc3 жыл бұрын
I liked the "trailer hitch vices" too but I thought the trailer hitches had a little 'wiggle-room' that might let your project move when you work on it. Would that be a problem?
@td66083 жыл бұрын
@@cockerjc Mine are similar only I made them so they clamp the inner piece. That works great!
@cockerjc3 жыл бұрын
@@td6608 Thanks! I'm interested, but how does it work? I don't know exactly what you are implying. Did you thread tap a side of the hitch receiver to allow a bolt to tighten the 2" "vice hitch" tube into a bind? No, your idea is probably faster. haha
@td66083 жыл бұрын
@@cockerjc If you imagine the outer piece of trailer hitch tubing six inches long, cut a slit out about a half inch wide the full length then halfway along weld a half inch nut on one side and a bushing that the bolt will fit through on the other side of the slit. Then install the bolt through the bushing into the nut and as you tighten it it will pull the two halves together and clamp the inner piece tightly. I use a 3/4" wrench but I'm thinking if welding a 1/2" x 4" rod across the bolt heads so I won't even need the wrench. I have to look again but I believe I built one like this only with two pieces of tubing (upper and lower) and use one bolt for both. This way I can use either the upper if I want the vise higher or the lower (about 6" down) if I want the vise lower. I'd make a video but I don't have the guts to post anything.

The stainless steel workbench is essentially what commercial kitchens are outfitted with. So check out a kitchen supply store or look for restaurant salvage. If you can catch a retail store being demolished, they will have heavy duty shelving and maybe carts too. Old discarded shopping carts have a ton of potential. Remove the basket but keep the handle and you have a sturdy dolly that could probably hold up anything short of a car engine. It's certainly capable of hauling around heavy bags of concrete and buckets.

I love it!- I've been a bit of a coyote most of my adult life, always working out of someone else's shop, and you can't beleave the absolute morral crushing, hair pulling, almost conscious aversion to having any semblance of organisation, much less a general area for tools, except not in here, because there's no place to even set down even a beer can, much less find that 9/16 wrench no one has seen in a decade- you'd need a bobcat just to see if there's a floor in some shops, and a metal detector, and an electro magnet, just to look for any tools that might still be in- or surrounding area- then, when you clear the bench, and find the floor- they come whining because you dug their rusty froze up pliers from the rubarb out in the back forty, and moved that ol' horse chewed three wheeler seat, on the busted up fender piece off the bench, and moved the bent up, ran over tricycle frame, out of the doorway for the first time in thirteen years, and somehow, they trip out, because they're not tripping over, and climbing around all of their hard earned hording piles and nope, what's a welding hood that hasn't been put through a WOODCHIPPER!- and when I DO find your long lost dust pan, don't go ooo! There it is! grab it, and make sure it's NEVER seen again- I'm not perfect by any stretch, and that's a fact!- but these are ACTUAL examples of ranch shops I've been expected to work in, without moving, clearing, shoveling, or changing anything- 'leave them old saddle blankets, that's where the barn cats sleep in the winter, on the work bench-by the stove' the kind where they just, work on things outside- no shit...

My favorite was the bench grinders and the vise. I'm going to do mine today.

Tip: cut the foam in smaller modular sizes. Allows you reorganize a drawer, swap out if screwdrivers change, or move to a totally different drawer or toolbox.

You could do the vacuum idea with your standard shop vac and a remote outlet or Wi-Fi/Alexa enabled outlet. Great video thanks for all the tips.

Wow. Love so much; I don't think I could pick a favorite. Absolutely going to be using my garage door frames for air & vacuums. Genius level!

Dam, That was fantastic. Someone who thinks like I think! I have been doing these types of improvements in my shop for years, but no where near this level. Doug, you are so right, It takes time, years and decades to get there! It's an evolution, it's a journey, its a process and it's a way of conduct in the shop. At 50, I am starting to realize, the older I get, the more important these organization hacks become. Wasted movement, bending, reaching, remembering where things go, losing tools, searching for tools is a drag! My favorite hack is the centrally located vacuum up on the ceiling!

How do you empty the vacuum cannisters? Do you need a ladder for that?

@Mark Gage I have a natural gas fired forced air system in there. Would have loved to do in floor heat but 25 years ago it wasn’t a big thing and not many were doing it at that time. But the good thing with the forced air system is I can add a condenser pretty easily and also have AC in there if I would choose to. But for now, it is just a heating unit.

Thought I was going to skim through this and watched every second in awe. The best tip is having a place for everything and knowing when it is missing. My dad used to flip out when he only knew a tool was missing when he needed it. With 8 boys in the family, we were always borrowing his tools and forgetting to return them! Love the vac and air hoses on the ceiling out of the way. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing…Doug has it down. I’ve never seen a better organized shop. He is spot on about the time wasted looking for things. Nice to see a guy that knows how to use tools, takes care of them too. Thanks for the video.

I really loved all of his ideas, but the vacuums mounted. Second would be the air compress hose. Thanks for this video!

I have another rolling tool box and going to use for woodworking tools. I love a lot of he’s ideas and Thanks to him for letting you in to show us his garage and for you doing the video. Wow, I’m glad i found this channel. I just built a 24’ by 30’ home shop which I will incorporate some of Doug’s ideas. I like the way the bench grinder swings down out of the way. Great idea, thanks.

A place for everything and everything in its place. My uncle told me that when I was around 10, I'm 36 now and have never forgotten that.

Trailer hitch vice mounts, single stainless top bent to cover two other benches, the sides and covers on the SWAG band saw and the tray to catch the trash, repurposed white cabinet for bulk battery tools, large lay-up table. All great ideas that I am certainly going to repurpose in my own garage we are building. Great video.

Awesome video, awesome shop. I work with a fellow that is as organized if not more. Problem is, It carries over to every aspect of his life. OCD to the max, to the point where as he's talking to you he's brushing lint off of your shoulder. If he happens to stop at your house or shop, as you're talking to him he's picking things off the floor and setting them in the trash, constantly looking around and getting more tense as he eyeballs your messy workbench. It's a running joke, however it is absolutely true, that he drives his wife and family absolutely nuts because it carries over into the house. He has a "better way" for everything, and don't you forget it. It is an absolute awesome trait if you can keep it under control and keep it to yourself. Once you start crossing the line of critiquing your co-workers, it's time for therapy
