Morning, just stumbled on your channel and my goodness WHAT a refreshing video. Thank you ever so much, we do our bills so similar, it's nice to hear and see another family in the same boat......we are just normal working people x
@andrewlee5237Ай бұрын
Thanks for your honesty around your finances. Too many KZbinrs who talk about their finances are not as open and their appears to be a serious lack of men who have these kind of channels. Just purchased your spreadsheet which I hope will help me to budget better, and yes at my age too I have always something to learn. Budgeting isn't just for the young as thousands of middle aged or older have plenty of debts and to ashamed to admit to it. 😄

Hi Shan - on the water bill front, check your loos - our toilet had a slow trickle from the cistern into the bowl which we thought nothing of and we ran up a £600 water bill! Thankfully our water company wrote it off which was good of them

Hi Shan! Love your account and you are a girl after my own heart with your budgeting spreadsheet. I too use one and it’s an absolute game changer! You also converted me to use Monzo, which I’m loving. Just a small thing, my TV licence is £13.25 per month in total, so you just need to update your 50/50 cost to £6.63 or thereabouts each. No big deal, but every little helps when you are left with £2.75 for the month 😘😂😅

Hi, single parent here. I appreciate the video. Some good ideas to implement myself! Why is your budget seperate from your husbands though? It changes the whole perspective if two of you earn 30k each.
@nicollebegbieАй бұрын
If you're claiming Child Benefit for children under 12 this works towards to your National Insurance contributions. Only if it's in your name and not partners name. So important parents know this especially when one takes time off for young children and this is mainly women.
@anniz9148Ай бұрын
How can you check this??
@nicollebegbieАй бұрын
@@anniz9148 if you're in the UK should happen automatically for the parent claiming. You can check by going to Check your State Pension forecast on the government website.
@HomeWithShanАй бұрын
I actually didn’t know this! Thank you xx
@daisybashtonАй бұрын
Yes I believe this is the case but only if you are not working or don't earn enough to pay NI contributions- so if you are a SAHM for example. It's also important you claim child benefit on mat leave even if you or your partner earn over the threshold to actually recieve the money (you can tick a box so you dont receive it so you dont have to pay back in your tax return) so that you still get your NI credits while on may leave. On top of state pension contributions are you going to top up your contributions to your civil service pension while you are off or are you considering a SIPP? Suspect the later is less beneficial as civil service pension may be index linked?

This is the position I have been guilty of getting myself in at times, going oh i end up with lots of spare money a month so ill subscribe to x, y and z ... but then down the line it just makes me feel trapped so I am trying to instead use pots and then only book holidays etc when i have the money there rather than direct debits even if they are interest free :)

Hi Shan, I really like the budget spreadsheet. I think it is very helpful to keep track of expenses. I find most of your videos relatable, however the monthly budget ones not so much for me, haha. Probably because at the moment I am a mum on maternity leave only as a form of income, so a monthly income as yours is not something achievable by most mums on maternity I don’t think. I hope you understand where I am coming from, don’t want to put you down or anything, good for you that you can make a significant amount of money from KZbin and afford to take a year off work and do everything you do! I do want to say that your childcare costs video helped me understand a lot, and I loooove your day routines videos and everything else you post. You have 2 beautiful kids and you seem a genuinely nice person! I guess I want to raise awareness on the fact that are loads of families out there that are struggling (I am not included, thankfully), that won’t have money for Christmas gifts, maybe not even basic stuff like food, nappies, formula etc., not to mention outings, or any other luxuries. So the ones that do, we can consider ourselves lucky and thankful, and maybe find a way to give back to others, if we can. That’s all, I really enjoy your channel and looking forward to your next video.
@THL1996xАй бұрын
These sorts of comments are unfair- Shan has already said she knows how lucky she is, nothing in this video screams out of touch at all.... the only option would be not to share anything? If you don't want to watch, don't, but at the end of the day why criticise someone over the fact she built a successful business which has enabled her this lifestyle (entirely through her own hard work). Good for you Shan!!
@DianaNagy23Ай бұрын
@ that’s exactly what I said, good for her that she can do all she does! You might want to read my comment again! We all all entitled to our own opinions regarding to what we find relatable, or not as relatable, aren’t we? Looking forward to her next video ❤️

@ Also, just to clarify, I am sure Shan is a very round headed person and understands that no one can create content that resonates 💯 with all subscribers, because we all all different in terms of personal circumstances and many other factors, too many to list! Sorry for stating such an obvious remark. That doesn’t mean her work is not appreciated, or that she needs to hide anything, or change anything she does. Hope this helps you understand my perspective :)

She knows this and has mentioned this countless times, these type of useless comments show you think she’s dumb and doesn’t know this. Just don’t watch them if u feel like this line this isn’t her first video of it, we are literally at the end of the year

Thanks again Shan. Your finance vids were how I found your channel in the first place, super helpful for a budgeting structure. Personally and from what I can see in other comments food prices seem to have really hiked up lately, I'm at almost double what I was paying 2 years ago with no family changes. Just wondering with regards to your food budget, does that include the Hello Fresh that you use as when I've checked this would cost around £50 for the week for 5 meals? Thanks, Mari x

Love these videos shan look forward to them every month! How do you keep money in your savings accounts and not being tempted to take it out if your short? This is my downfall. Do you keep your savings separate from your current account so you can't see how much is in it does this help? Ok constantly checking my banks too and numbers just throw my mind and I'm always skint after two weeks of pay day 😢xx

Defo put them in a different account, long term things try and put them in a limited transaction saving account. You do need to work on self control but everyone does who chooses to start budgeting x
@HomeWithShanАй бұрын
I totally get this, it is hard to keep yourself on track. None of us are perfect, but honestly that sense of achievement when you see that savings account building up is worth it for me! I find having my spending money and savings in my Monzo account is just that extra layer before I can spend it, which helps! But overall it’s mainly about mindset and long term goals and having those small but realistic treats to get you through. For me, getting my hair done, allocating money for days out with the kids etc ❤

If you can manage 2 family holidays abroad a year and a hen do and a Butlins do then you are doing really well, I would struggle to pay for one U.K. holiday a year right now but to be honest we don’t need those holidays - the kids don’t miss out, and certainly not while they are young. You could go to the nearest beach and they’d enjoy it just the same - I’d be saving for that big Japan holiday and putting the others aside (except for the wedding holiday) - holidays are a huge drain on the budget - same for Christmas. - I regret all the money I used to spend when my children were small, they just didn’t need it all. The money would have served us far better later on

A decent savings account will help you. Some penalise you for withdrawing money early, which might be enough of a disincentive for you. If not, you will accrue interest even if you only have money in the account for a few days, so you might want to leave it there longer to accrue more interest. Revolut, for example, add interest daily on some accounts.

This video panicked me! You and your husband earn a good bit more than me but that is close to the wire, and I can’t help but worry some of it’s unrealistic - like where is the money for the top up shops etc? If I were you I would quit the Japan saving until next years holidays were over, then you could start funnelling £150 a month in to make it up. It unsustainable to only have so little left. Good luck!!!
@HomeWithShanАй бұрын
I totally get this! Obviously this is very close to the wire this month and as I say in the video, that’s on me for committing to too much!! We rarely do top up shops, but if we need to, then whoever has money in their current account (usually my husband) would do that. I’m a “make do with what we have” kinda girl when it comes to food haha!
@mcsunga8137Ай бұрын
I wouldnt worry too much :) I get why people sometimes make their budgets tighter in some areas than most would. I believe she just wants to prioritise things she values more at this stage in her life. It is more sensible to skip japan for now as it is very very far away and allocate it towards the food shop. But it may turn out that allocating it there reinforces more spending instead of being strict with the original 200. Personally if I give myself a bit of wiggle room with my budget than what was previously intended, I max it out to the new upper limit and justify that the budget says so haha.
