I purchased the collection from GOG some time ago for the remastered version and Deserts of Kharak but they won't work on Windows 11. I have tried a number of things but they just won't boot.

Fuel was a pretty important mechanic for the Gardens of Kadesh enemies, and made those battles distinct and interesting. Though I guess for the player it was more annoying than anything else.

I liked it for a fact it gave smaller ships sort of "softcap" on how far they could operate. No bomber rushing from across the map! Tho I think having ships just stranded in void of space ws too much penalty. IMHO they only should be able to move (slowly), have limited visual range and have no attack capability (so they basically can only hobble to refuel station), kind of like they just barely can power the engines.

I still remember playing original HW1 and Cataclysm and being stranded in a prolonged dogfight. They can't take that away from us.

what i love the most - or as one of the most coolest things in that game - all the homeworld games - is the pilotchatter - them relying information between another calmy, chaotic panic and all that all those game do such a cool job at conveying that. even in moment when nothing happening and ya just have your fighters patrolling ya can hear em talking between another, its an incredible feel on the immersion.

I found the fuel removal to be a significant change to how you use fighters, docking and carrying fighter waves in carriers and on support frigates was a cool and interesting way to deploy fighter wings. The gardens of Kadesh is a significantly different experience in remastered than the original as the fuel was a VERY important aspect of the fight, it's how you were able to fight back they had to refuel often. They didn't use fuel in HW1 because the engine apparently made it difficult. Remastered is a flawed masterpiece. On fuel again, jumping a carrier group PACKED with strike craft and corvettes across the map allowed a big strikecraft swarm that would never have the range if they just flew from your mothership/carrier fleet base. Which you can just do now with hw2's engine fly strike craft from one side of the map to the other without having to think about using hyperspace and carriers.

Fun fact about sky(space?)boxes in Homeworld 1&2 (pre-Rememaster) - they are NOT images, but polygon graphics with vertex shading. This is why they look great no matter the resolution. I'm not sure about remastered backgrounds, but wouldn't be surprised if they used regular high resolution images.

I want to say that the VAYGR, while they do have remants of the taiidan empire... they are actually WAY older. They started akin to space Mongols , They are nomads conquering planet to planet and using those planets resources and technology to conquer the next world but they are still using standard slow drives and takes them years to travel between them stars ... they were not really a threat to the core systems of the galaxy (were most civilizations live) until During in the middle of the events of homeworld 1 and 2 when they discovered hyperspace technology (no spoilers- they explain that better in-game) and thats were they truly became a dangerous force able to conquer almost all of the eastern part of the galaxy and poised to conquer the rest of it. I honestly love this faction lol. especially their ships look and functions

The Difficulty of Homeworld 2 remastered is, I think, actually quite a bit easier than in the original release. I've played both versions through a few times without cheese and I think they definitely did some good work smoothing things out. Spoilers ahead. The health of the first keeper might have gone up, but I'm pretty sure it's weapons have been tuned way down, and the same holds true later. The fleet at the Gehenna command station is far smaller. The fleet at Thaddis Sabah is far, *far* smaller. The only mission I think still has close to it's original insane difficulty is Balcora gate. It can still be quite tricky to get to the gate power generators before they die. ;) Then Balcora itself still has a decent-ish fleet as well. Overall it's a big improvement - it does get hard, but it's still possible without tearing your hair out trying to outmicro a fleet six times the size of yours that's in full attack mode. (Looking at you, Thaddis Sabbah.) But even more importantly than that, it's a difficulty curve, rather than an easy first mission, an easy 2nd mission, a normal 3rd mission, then the 4th mission skipping straight to seriously hard... before returning to snore-fest difficulty for the next 3 missions. (Given how much they improved that, it's strange the mess they made of Homeworld 1's campaign.)

I tend to prefer strategy games that present their universe in realistic terms. One of the great things about the Homeworld series is the dedication to consistency of scale. The way imaginary ships emerge from the cavernous berths of massive motherships and strikecraft scream out of your carriers hangers. Your battlecruiser really is massive compared to your frigates. This isn't Starcraft where they're only huge in the cinematics. The ship designs in HW2 are awesome, but they're even cooler because you feel like you're commanding a proper fleet. I really enjoyed how BBI amplified this element in Deserts of Kharak by enhancing the role of command carriers as active units. Watching Strike Fighters and bombers launch from carriers as you send the command never gets old. Loved the vehicular fantasy so much I 3D printed my own carrier models from that game.

Very hyped, I love the devs and after Desert o kharak being so amazing I can only expect good stuff. I still hate how remastered came out however, left me a bit cautious. They ruined the gameplay the first game by cramming it into the wrong engine, and no amount of patches could solve it.

Fuel, I think, was awesome in Homeworld 1. Support Frigates became some sort of light carrier. I honestly hope that HW3 does include fuel mechanics, and gives support frigates that dual-role of both healing and refueling to be a unique kind of support/light carrier. Perhaps it has a small "docking" area akin to HW1 support frigates, but the fighters/corvettes can stay in those slots indefinitely for rapid deployment.

Only mission I ever really hated in the homeworld games was that damn solar radiation mission. And I didn’t like that the game scaled with you in the remake, no reason I should be punished with a missile cruiser on like 3rd mission just because I stole some bummy ships. I’m only a year older than homeworld I didn’t play the original until about 2 years ago, easily top 5 games of all time.

Was HW2 a good sequel? No, no it wasn't. While I prefer it's squadrons over single strikecraft and it's ship designs are FAR better in aesthetics and visuals people have to understand that relic had dreamed too big for it (look into Homeworld DustWars as what HW2 was meant to be.) What likely happened is Sierra Entertainment likely forced them to make something of DustWar's failed development. HW3 is basically what they wanted to do with HW2 anyway, large intractable objects in a 3d space. BBI made a great game with DoK, its life was cut short but atmosphere wise? DoK has the best in the series imo. I have faith that HW3 will be good. If it isn't? Then if the game is fairly easy to mod it will spawn plenty of great mods which is probably why the franchise is still alive. The modding community for HW2 kept the dev's hopes for a new game alive. Any who I hope I can look back at all of this hype I have for the game and be able to say I was right.
