The Homeworld Revelations RPG Corebook has been released, and it turns out I will have to redo this video (yay). Most of the core ideas here about the pre-exile era seem to have been kept, but certain others like the meaning of Unbound, and the expanding of certain other bits of lore have been added. I just got the book now so I haven't fully dived it, but here's what I surmised: - The Hiigarans were aggressive - The Taiidan Empire used political manuvering with the Council to get the disputed worlds between them and Hiigara - Hiigara found the 2nd Hyperspace core and placed it in "Sajuuk's Wrath" that led a fleet to wipe out the Taiidani and attack the Bentusi - In the aftermath, the Taiidan Navy struck back so hard against the Hiigarans that it forced them to surrender and go into exile. Also about the Unbound, yes, they went with the Cata definition where it's guys/girls/& others jacked into their ships. So those who brought up concerns of me using the HW2 definition (Any race that has Hyperspace) have been proven right in the end.

Agreed, great lore video. Your efforts will certainly bring everybody up-to-speed, too! On "Unbound", I always thought of it as an elusive term with several meanings. Not to say it is a macguffin term, but - say - in a way how it was with Star Wars' prominent "The Force" analogies (excluding Midichlorians/Prequel explanations).

Yea sorry but no. Your info is from the much more developed wiki. The core book is also missing key stuff (wich wasnt hard to spot... like a certain between HW1 and 2 war that is even present in the timeline) And yea, Hiigarans where the agressors, they had an EMPIRE not a federation. Dozens of races where beaten up by them but... those are info's from the wiki already, not first appeared in the core book right now. And how did you not know about the Unbound being.... SHIPBOUND? Thats beyond me as HW1 and 2 already tell you this, as well as Cataclysm telling more about it. Oh and there is not only one bentusi on each trade habor ship ohhh no. Each weapon, each subsystem is its own unbound. THAT is the only bit of info that was not already present in the wiki pre core book release.

I found a copy of that same gray/grey game manual in a tiny used book shop in Julian, California a few years ago. I snatched that thing up as soon as I saw it, and I’m glad it caught my eye because it wasn’t even on their main bookcase displays, it was in a hallway. If you return to the Karos Graveyard in HW1, most of the ships deposited there resemble the post-Kharak Kushan ship design; sleek, curved, and with elongated engine nacelles. They look like ancient versions of the ships you command in the game. My head canon was always, that these were the defeated or surrendered fleets before the exile, and were left there to rot. I only wished that the game addressed this, the way they found similarities in origins with the Kadeshi cultists and included that in the story. When you first arrive at Karos, there is a derelict heavy cruiser floating near the Mothership's location, and fleet research reports they are ready to research "heavy guns", no doubt from seeing them on the derelicts they encountered there.

@MacsLore
@MacsLore 2 жыл бұрын
I looked into this a little, and the line about the Unbound I think you're referring to came from Cataclysm, which has it's own status of being both canon and not-canon due to being made by Barking Dog and not Relic. Which I take as, "It's canon as long as it doesn't contradict the Relic/BBI Games". Which unfortunately in this case, I believe it does. The part where I got the definition of Unbound from is a line in "Prelude to the End times", which in turn was taken from the Official Homeworld 2 Strategy guide written by HW2 producer Dan Irish. An excerpt from that line is: "...each race thereby joining the Bentusi as unbound races among the stars." Which means that "Unbound" in this case, would be implied as being able to travel in Hyperspace, as the section it was pulled from was talking about "The Gift of Hyperspace". I believe this meaning of Unbound to be further reinforced when later it's stated: "...becoming a galactic community released from the shackles of sublight travel that once *bound* them." As HW2 was a Relic game, I believe it would supersede anything that Cataclysm says about being "Unbound". If Homeworld 3, or the Homeworld RPG core book makes a definite statement about this that sides with Cataclysm, I'll go with it. But for now, I believe the HW2 definition is the safer bet.

One thing about the exile. I believe a term was that none were permitted to aid or follow the fallen. And yet a taidan ship deployed an orbital weapons platform over Kharak. I'm reasonably sure that was a violation of treaty. Meaning they had NO grounds to glass Kharak since they violated the treaty LONG before the Kushan did.

There's a very good chance that I may have to come back to this topic with new and updated information, because of the upcoming Homeworld Tabletop RPG, Homeworld: Revelations. As it turned out they recently announced that they're bringing in one of the original writers for the Homeworld Series to work on their Core Rulebook, which is supposed to be filled with all sorts of delicious lore about the history of the Homeworld universe from the beginning up to the start of Homeworld 3 I think. Since I was already deep into working on the video at the time, I didn't want to just junk it and wait for the new RPG book to come out. So I'm going to release what I have for now, and when the book is released in Winter of this year, I can make another updated video based on the lore from the Corebook. Hopefully, I wont have to change too much. As an aside, on the extreme off-chance if anyone working on the RPG is watching, I'd like to ask if maybe we can get a canon location for the Taiidan Empire before they annexed the Hiigarans? That part bothered me more then it should have while working on this, as it seems no one officially placed them in the galaxy besides a mention that they "Bordered the Hiigarans". And maybe a little more detail about how Hyperspace works, pleeease.

I really like the idea that they are finally expanding this universe. My interpretation was that we aren't so much dealing with different species as members of the same species that have diverged from a common ancestor. The implication is the the Progenitors were reduced to a bunch of scattered populations on different worlds, which became the modern races of the galaxy. So while there are probably other species, the ones featured in the game appear to be essentially human. As for the hyperspace modules not generating power themselves, in one of the cutscenes in DoK it was stated that the energy output of "the primary anomaly" aka the core rivaled the output of Kharak's sun. Not much is known about how they're supposed to work, but I think at least the big 3 cores can generate their own power. That the thing had the ability to redirect ships near Kharak to the surface for thousands of years, I'd say it must have been generating it's own power because the fusion core had failed or been powered down when Khar Toba was abandoned. It seems that even the Bentusi didn't fully understand the tech so all these races are copying and using a lost, then recovered technology without having any mastery of it, hence why these 3 cores are so coveted

Minor point to clear up. After the destruction of the Taiidan Imperial Palace, in addition to demanding the Dismantling of the Sajuk’s Wrath and surrender of the Hyprespace Core, the Galactic Council immediately demanded that the Entirety of the Hiigaran Navy be Disbanded and their ships abandoned in Neutral Space. As you say, The Hiigarans accepted the terms, but only if they surrendered the Core to the Bentusi, the only force which could rival their own. This is why the Bentusi so willingly entered the space where the entire Hiigaran Fleet was waiting, seemingly deactivated and abandoned. They did not expect to be double crossed by the Hiigarans, little that it mattered… The Holocaust of the Hiigaran Race was the greatest Tragedy that the Bentusi would forever regret being responsible for, and brought about the Taiidan Rule over the Galaxy for the next three thousand years.

So when the Hiigarans were exiled, was there no cut-off point for said exile? Did the Bentusii not know that Kharak would eventually be uninhabitable through natural processes? Did they not send occasional covert expeditions to check on the Kharakiid? If there was a point where the exile was meant to end, did the other races just forget about it or did the Taidan deliberately violate that part of the treaty? But I could be miss memorize it, anyways, great job on explaining, I've been looking forward to lore video explaining this for a long time, it kinda also shows that Hiigaran isn't particularly an angel in the past, adding the gray side of the conflict, love it!

Excellent video; I enjoyed the documentary-style commentary on the Homeworld lore, and I also learned a little bit as well (I was previously a bit confused about how the Galactic council was organized so the clarification/explanation definitely helped)! Unrelated question: who/what is your profile pic from? I feel like I've seen it before (I wanna say it was on a book cover), but I'm not quite sure.

I might actually have to redo this video in the future depending on what Homeworld Revelations says about this era of the universe, as I have no idea what they're going to keep or throw away from the HW2 fluff. But unfortunately it's been delayed until September. :/ My AV should seem familiar if you've played Starcraft, as it's a take on the Battlecruiser Portrait, but instead of some dude with a 'stache, it's Kongou from Kantai Collection.

“Race” in the context of Homeworld refers to different groups of humans, not separate species. From what we see of the Bentusi, they’re a particularly ancient & advanced human civilization not actually a separate species. Of course the functionality of becoming unbound and the thus the bizarre nature of Bentusi biology functionally makes them a unique entity compared to the other human factions.

OK you get a few things wrong in this. Firstly, Bentus is the only Bentusi ship that can far jump because it contains one of the three Progenitor cores. Trade ships, such as we see in the first game, are not capable of this unless their core is activated by the Progenitor's in some unexplained manner (much the same way a Frigate can far jump when activated by the Mothership's core). The way you explained it sounds like all Bentusi ships can far jump which is incorrect. Secondly, the "unbound" is what the Bentusi call themselves, and the only other individual they've referred to as that is Karan. This is because the Bentusi are integrated into their ships in the same way she (and possibly Makan) was. The other races are not "unbound".
@MacsLore
@MacsLore 2 жыл бұрын
I had to think about your first point for a bit then reread the History of Hiigara. And well, your right. I believe the way I read the text was that all Bentusi ships could Far-jump, somehow overlooking the established fact it's dependent solely on the Hyperspace Core and what's around it. Which is why such it's implied here, and is something I need to keep in mind when I redo the video with the new content from the HWRPG/HW3. However, as to the definition of "Unbound", someone else brought up this issue before. So I will use the same answer I gave to them: "I looked into this a little, and the line about the Unbound I think you're referring to came from Cataclysm, which has it's own status of being both canon and not-canon due to being made by Barking Dog and not Relic. Which I take as, "It's canon as long as it doesn't contradict the Relic/BBI Games". Which unfortunately in this case, I believe it does. The part where I got the definition of Unbound from is a line in "Prelude to the End times", which in turn was taken from the Official Homeworld 2 Strategy guide written by HW2 producer Dan Irish (or by someone else on the HW staff). An excerpt from that line is: "...each race thereby joining the Bentusi as unbound races among the stars." Which means that "Unbound" in this case, would be implied as being able to travel in Hyperspace, as the section it was pulled from was talking about "The Gift of Hyperspace". I believe this meaning of Unbound to be further reinforced when later it's stated: "...becoming a galactic community released from the shackles of sublight travel that once bound them."....
@MacsLore
@MacsLore 2 жыл бұрын
...As HW2 was a Relic game, I believe it would supersede anything that Cataclysm says about being "Unbound". If Homeworld 3, or the Homeworld RPG core book makes a definite statement about this that sides with Cataclysm, I'll go with it. But for now, I believe the HW2 definition is the safer bet."
@MarkoLomovic
@MarkoLomovic 2 жыл бұрын
@@MacsLore I don't think there is need to supersede anything because bound can mean different things. it can mean unbound as in not having a homeworld/ living in space and, unbound from shackles of the planet and having hyperspace capabilities. Also in refrence to Karen she can be seen as unbound because they see her as similar to them selves in both being integrated to ship and in possesion of core. So I don't think one exculedes the other and more to do with just the way Bentusi communicate.

Vaygrs found Third Core while searching Progenitors wreckages at Hithlum Icefields. They were originally nomadic race scavenging such wreckages at eastern side of galaxy, getting new technologies. Being surrounded by leftovers after progenitors and discovering all those things, technologies, gifts led them to think, they are the choosen people, Progenitors descendants. When they found The Core, Maakan has unified all Vaygrs and started conquer. As HW2 game says, remnants of Old Taiidan Empire joined also Vaygrs, seeking revenge after defeat of Riesstu at Hiigara 30 years earlier (final battle at HW1).

As much I'm not a fan of HW2 and its retcons from the magical Hyperspace Cores to the idea of Progenitors (am more into preferring the DoK > HW Classic > Cataclysm/Emergence lore), the fact that the Kharakian Kushan actually repeated what Admiral Riesstiu did to their past ancient Hiigaran vestiges actually makes for some nice ironic storytelling. Still, will wait for HW3 whilst hoping for its success. Addendum: Say, any plans for lore vids on Star Control I and its far better and more canonical sequel Star Control II/The Ur-Quan Masters?

What always bugs me in this story is how Bentusi would have missed the hyperspace core on Hiigara's moon, and how Hiigaran could smuggle something with such massive energy signature onto the exile ship undetected. It would make more sense if Sajuuk's wrath would have purposely crashed on Karak instead of on the angelmoon.

Ill be honest, i kinda wish the Taiidan were more justified. In the first Homeworld game, the Bentusi made it sound like the Hiigarans were a truly despotic and cruel race that deserved to be punished. It made it all the more tragic to see the Kushan come to terms with their terrible progenitors. But the Hiigarans, while short sighted, certainly didnt deserve the hatred of that degree from the Taiidan! It makes the Taiidan seem like monsters. It just doesnt feel right.

I’m slightly confused with the cores. The only way you can far jump is with one, but they’re only individual cores, can a single one work for an entire fleet? Or does close analysis of them reveal how to replicate it? That would explain how the Bentusi could respond to some but not all wars that broke out. But taking away the core from whoever had it wouldn’t do anything because the former owners would still know how to far jump.
@MacsLore
@MacsLore 2 жыл бұрын
The Core can only far-jump whatever ship it's attached to and whatever ships in the fleet happen to be around it at the time, and I don't believe there was any method of replicating it. So taking away a core would take away one's ability to far-jump. There might be a slight possibility that the Bentusi had some method to far jump without it, but it was never mentioned directly. The source I pulled this from, the Prelude to the End Times/HW2 Official Strategy Guide was kind of vague. It simply said the Bentusi could far jump, never mentioning if it was one ship, a fleet around a far-jump ship, or their entire navy. Admittedly it was an oversight on my part that implied all of their ships could far jump without taking into account how we've seen the hyperspace cores work in the actual game.

It's a shame that the Hiigarans got the short end of the stick in the exile. The Taiidan were clearly asking for it with their subterfuge and political assassinations, both clearly dishonorable, but the Hiigarans were the ones who got punished for leading what would be considered a retaliatory strike against them, all because another power wanted to "conserve peace." This is why having a big galactic government (or any big overarching power controlling smaller players) is a bad idea.

The search for the signal and finding the way stone with the map and realizing how they were not from this place but a planet far away. And how it took years and generations to build the mothership and all the strife and hardship. And Karan S'jet and the S'jet family and how she sacrificed herself to become fleet command... oh man that could have all been the first season alone. When I came home and installed that game I was so determined to get these people home that it was crazy. So therefore this is so crazy that there is no movies or series or Anime or even a comic. Interestingly, the supplementary material in Homeworld Cataclysm painted Riestiuu as insane and paranoid, which only got worse over the long centuries. It got so bad that the rest of the galactic community pretty much shunned the Taiidan Empire, laying the ground work for them siding with the Kushan/Hiigarans. But take that with a grain of salt, Cataclysm's canon-status has always been kinda weird, and might get retconned with the Homeworld RPG.
