One of the most grim things about this game is pretty hard to notice. When you finish the campaign, Rachel talks about how the discovery of the origins of the people of Kharak become common knowledge and unify their people to eventually build the Mothership and escape their doomed world. Having finished the game, it's likely that you'll want to play more and will check out the skirmish mode shortly after this. Fascinatingly, all of the skirmish maps have a blurb that describes them as a recreation of a historical scenario where factions from either tech tree fought each other for control of territory, resources and artifacts- and most if not all of them are dated years after the main campaign.

I quite like the idea of the Hyperspace core hoovering up starships that stray too near. It contextualises why the Taidan are so enthusiastic about nuking the planet to begin with. The Hiigaran's are the ancient bogeymen, they were banished to a dying world with no support or technology to back them up. Yet that planet is essentially the Bermuda Triangle of space now, ships go there but they don't come back, so even in their diminished state the Hiigarans must still be massively dangerous. Then one day the Turanic Mercenaries the Empire pays to watch the planet (it's too risky to post actual Taidan fleet resources where they might just disappear without trace) reports the Hiigarans are building themselves a fleet. They're still a paranoid and failing empire, but it makes sense to me that one of their last plays would be 'look the Hiigarans were coming back and we protected you,' rather than doing it purely for intimidation.

I absolutely adore this game. It was clunky, disjointed, repetitive and light on content. But this is one of those rare games where you can see the devs built the world long before they ever started building the game. The story of Homeworld is engraved in someone's brain somewhere. An entire fictitious universe that they created and spun a whole series of games about but this right here was the story that they always wanted to tell. They were finally given the opportunity, and it's just tragic that they didn't have the time and money to let the game cook a little longer. I remember reading somewhere that even before the original Homeworld, this story came first. The story of pioneers and salvagers breaking down shipwrecks on alien worlds. Then they came up with Kharak as the most inhospitable planet in the galaxy, gave it a really cool backstory and decided to make a whole game around that lore. The goal was never to make boatloads of money; just for a few friends to share this incredible story they'd spun outside their little friends group. Homeworld evolved from a game about salvagers to an incredible story about a pilgrimage across the stars and they had to make up everything after that as they went along. The original story of Kharak though was always on their minds, and after years of building a fanbase they finally got to tell it. Plus, let's be honest... What could be cooler than LANDSHIP AIRCRAFT CARRIERS?

Love that you mention Ground Control. I remember playing through GC1 back in the day. I played as the leader of the first faction (the girl) and then as the Deacon Stone (IIRC) the leader of their enemies. Since they were a religious cults, I imagined the game would end in some sort of spiritual goal having been archived. Instead I got a bucket of ice cold water when the final cutscenes rolled around. In a good way.

Rather than Homeworld I am quite convinced that his game is a massive homage to the first Ground Control. I went in not expecting much from it and had a massive nostalgia trip.

Deserts of Kharak was very good, It's actually the first Homeworld game I managed to finish. I love the way they make the desert feel like an ocean, and the gigantic land carrier is awesome.

This game felt like a thrust into the setting that hit its mark. It didn't get to do everything it wanted or craved, it didn't get the full round of polish, but it completed its core objectives.

Bought this game a few days ago out of pure boredom looking for a new RTS to play and man, it is amazing. The lore of Homeworld is so interesting and the brooding atmosphere of DoK just hits hard. Always thought space Homeworld looked to difficult to get into, but now I'm an hour into the remasters and it's fantastic. Wish Catalcysm gets a remaster as well as the story and sheer terror of it intrigues me more than the other games.

@@danieladamczyk4024 Modiphius published a Homeworld Tabletop RPG that covers events of Homeworld 1,2 Cataclysm, and Deserts of Kharak and and you can play in that Universe. i can't really say much cause I have not bought it but it looks like a great book when it comes to exploring the lore of Homeworld.

Oh hey, I made a cameo in the animation! Jokes aside, I love the fact that you keep bringing back the animator. Mechanicus animations are one of my favourites - for, well, obvious reasons. And I love the game. It is sadly the only Homeworld title I played.

I really love this channel. I love the deep reviews of games that came out a while ago. From this relatively new game, to ones that have come out 20+ years ago. I havent played this since 2016 and this has made me reinstall and play again. It would be fun to go through this, then play through the Homeworld Remastered

I'm kinda surprised to see the lack of the game's history being mentioned in the video or the comments. At least some of the jankiness of the game can be put down to the fact that it spent most of its time being developed independently by a bunch of "stray" devs that had been core to development of Homeworld. There were plenty of people on forums begging for a new Homeworld game for years, and the response was that the ownership of the IP was so fractured, jacked up, and confused that it was unlikely anyone would ever own enough of it to be able to make another game again. This game was originally called "Shipbreaker," and early on the central mechanic of the game was exploring and breaking down the ship wreckage in the desert. The devs were running with a "haha hey guys even though this looks and sounds and feels like a Homeworld game that we know you all want, it totally isn't, so please don't sue us" model for quite a long time. Then, through a bit of a miracle, Homeworld's IP was reconsolidated and put up for auction (in an absolutely terrible state; _lots_ of source was missing to the point it was like they were handed a couple old CDs and wished good luck), which Gearbox Software purchased and pretty much immediately started working on the remaster of. When they were struggling with being able to figure out what the original intention of some pixels on old blurry textures were supposed to be and other similar issues, someone mentioned to them, "hey, yanno, like a good portion of the original devs are over there working on that game...maybe ask them?" In the end, Gearbox helped them publish Deserts of Kharak and allowed them to integrate the Homeworld IP into the game in return for assistance with the remaster of the original games. My favorite point in that journey being the original sound guy who had kept all the original master recordings stashed in a cardboard box at his home, and it's thanks to him that the remaster doesn't sound like compressed audio off the original public game CD put through a cleanup filter.
