I'm from Bulgaria. Me and my best friend have known English from a very young age and we grew up sort of immersed in American and British culture through social media. Over the years we developed a very strong and supportive attitude towards the LGBTQ community thanks to not only communicating with much more open minded and accepting people but also we had more information AND we've talked and became friends with people from that community as well. We were able to build our own perceptions while being able to compare the attitudes from people in Bulgaria and people from around the world and ultimately we grew up informed and unsheltered from such "displays" as all these people are calling it. I think the main problem in bulgaria is that LGBT people here are scared to come out and never do because of the obvious judgement and bullying that will follow. Another wrong side effect this has is that people who aren't part of the community don't get the chance to see that whoever it is that has a different sexuality than them is not that different. My bff turned out to be bi and 2 other classmates later came out to me and her as a lesbian and gay because I believe we made them feel comfortable and safe and yet no one other person in my class knew and don't know to this day. The sad truth is that everyone were good friends with these people with 0 judgement and they didn't even realize how the insults they sneered were affecting the friends that support them. Bulgaria needs more exposure to lgbt people to wake up and realize that nothing is wrong with them but it will never happen thanks to assholes like the people in this video. PS: (A little side story, one super homophobic friend of ours recently found out about my bff and she was shocked at first, but definitely not dumb enough to open her mouth with insults. I think it was life changing for her to realize that the girl who stood by her for 2 years and helped her through her hardest times is bi. A few weeks went by since then and they've had their talks and discussions, because the girl is actually a nice person, and now she realizes her misjudgments. She had apologized and been supportive since)

I’m Bulgarian and I find it a bit out of context if the history behind that social attitude is left unspoken. Bulgarians were not homophobic, nor there are example of purposely planted homophobia in the Bulgarian society. Bulgaria is one of the oldest states in Europe, it exists for already 14 centuries. The problem and planting of homophobia in Bulgaria appeared with the Soviet Socialist occupation of the country. Communists (aka Socialists) had very certain anti-homosexuality attitude. According Marxist ideology (and the Darwinism on which the “Dialectic Materialism” is based), homosexuality is a sign of decaying moral, of anti-social behaviour. As I grew up in such environment I can tell you how oppressive the Communists (aka Socialists) were back then, about the number of court trials against homosexuals, about the fact that the Soviet Socialist legislation in Bulgaria stated homosexuality a deadly mental disease that has to be eradicated. That is the background, what you see is not the vast majority of Bulgarians. What you see are those, who were (or are) raised with the same Communist attitude towards homosexuality. It has absolutely nothing to do with Orthodox Christianity, or something else - it’s a pure consequence of 45 years imposed Soviet Socialism.
@amaljohnson58044 жыл бұрын
Communism isn't the same as socialism. Look up the difference. Also in western Europe and in America socialists tend to be very pro gay. Not sure about communists. If communism is anti gay why do far right groups in eastern Europe associate LGBT movements with communism?
@bvaradinov4 жыл бұрын
Amal Johnson Learn history. In 1916, the Second Socialist International dismissed itself because all Socialist parties around the world were taking different positions on how to fight the capitalism and bourgeoisie. At that point Lenin called all socialists around the world to reunite as communists and proclaimed that from now on every socialist who turns any tool into a weapon against capitalism would be called “ a communist”. That’s how the Comintern (Communist International) was founded, and except the British Labour Party and the Serbian Socialist Party, all other Socialist parties around the world renamed themselves “communist”. The only difference between a Socialist and a Communist is (as I pointed above) in the way the world’s capitalism must be defeated. There’s no ideological difference, those are just two different stages of Marxism. Whereas the socialists (except the National Socialists in Germany) claim that the capitalists should be fought with political actions, the Communists claim that the fight should be turned into a revolution and the world’s proletariat should destroy (physically) the imperialists and the capitalists. That’s the “difference”.
@bvaradinov4 жыл бұрын
Amal Johnson As for the LGBTQ rights and the Socialists in the West world - I’m strongly convinced to think that the good will of treating every citizen (no matter race, sexuality, gender, etc) should be based on common sense, not on political agenda. When those rights are used to follow an agenda which agenda is not only about those rights, then the abuse of the common sense is guaranteed. It happens now when Socialists from some states claim that Socialists from other states are “incorrect” socialists, because those have abandoned the Marxist ideology and relied on support of people (such as the gay people), who’s people are well defined by the Marxist ideology as the “trash of the society”.

One can choose to hate gay, colored or Jew ppl and it’s 100% legal, in any country. Even to say mean things about this groups is legal in many countries. This is unacceptable. Most of the public interviewed presented gay people to be some sorts of “outsiders” that they could choose either to accept or reject. As for not wanting to see public displays of affection - who do they think they are to say that gay people cannot freely express their sexualities and yet straight couples can?? This is complete madness and they speak as if they have superiority towards others. I am disgusted and ashamed.

As a Bulgarian who’s lived in the Netherlands (I also saw your Dutch video for comparison to this one), I would say that when it comes to LGBT people, Bulgarians are not so different than the Dutch. What I mean by this is that when you look at Bulgaria, you should think of it as a country in transition. In fact, Bulgaria is a lot like a blend of new and old. Here, much has remained in the past yet the country is in many ways pretty modern and accepting. You immediately see this by looking at the younger and older generations. They differ immensely because older people have lived almost their entire lives during socialism whereas younger people have entirely lived in a capitalist/democratic society. As the video clearly shows, the younger generation in Bulgaria is much more open-minded and lighthearted while the so called “boomers” are mostly bitter and intolerant. The difference between Bulgaria and the Netherlands is that virtually everyone in NL has lived in a free and open society, even the elderly. With that being said, the only person who had a somewhat negative opinion on LGBT people in the Dutch video was some older lady (when she says she would be “more or less” shocked if she saw two men or women kissing or holding hands). Also, Bulgarians are not that homophobic considering where Bulgaria is. Russia is much more homophobic than Bulgaria because it historically was and still is a highly oppressive country. So after all, it is more of a generational difference and a difference between political systems/regimes than an ethnic difference
@Нана-о9х2 жыл бұрын
I don't see what "socialism" has to do with this. Ask any boomer from Britain or the US if they support LGBT people and you will get very similar results despite them living in liberal democracies...

To curb homophobia, one must understand the fears driving it. Here's my take: First, it's the stereotype of lgbt (especially gay male) people as physically weak, vain, flamboyant and pretentious, which deviates from the ideal of a tough man (especially relevant in Eastern Europe where people grow up with the idea that the state, the mafia, just about any foreign power, the economy, the neighborhood thugs, your neighbor and their mother are out to get you - and this is mostly justified). The reasoning goes, you are weak (remember, in the mind of these people being LGBT always makes you weak), you can't protect yourself or those around you and leave that to others, you won't continue your family line and thus you make every group you belong to - family, society, nation - weaker and more vulnerable to aggressive outsiders. In the case of Bulgaria, with its shrinking ethnic Bulgarian population, not having kids is seen as letting certain minorities and/or migrants with a bad reputation "outbreed" Bulgarians and thus homosexuality is seen as a contributing factor. Also, see "cuck". Then, particularly in Eastern Europe, there's also the fact that LGBT acceptance is a recent phenomenon and it's carried by Western influences. The West, if seen as desirable for its material affluence, is generally viewed with distrust when it comes to liberalisation of society. Also, when Western celebrity culture was introduced to Bulgaria in the 90s/early 00s, several celebrities came out as LGBT and actively used a flamboyant image as a publicity stunt, resulting in a stigma of coming out and being LGBT as "attention-seeking". Besides, since during communist rule coming out meant getting institutionalised and thus people kept in the closet, society thinks that "there were no gays during communism" and list the "weak gays" among the ways in which the West is "ruining" our society. Then comes (some serious bullshit here) the black-and-white thinking when talking about normalcy. To a conservative mind, there can only be one set of "normal" societal values and everything else is seen as "abnormal" and undesirable. Thus, when LGBT people push for acceptance, this is seen as a threat to replace the current society with one where LGBT is the only "normal" and heterosexuality is seen as a bad thing, ostracized and discriminated against. This is especially egregious with pride parades (people ask what's to be proud of about being LGBT but they'll attend military parades and thump their chests and brag about how proud they are of just being Bulgarians) and see them as an attack on their civil liberties. Related to that, people also hate pride parades specifically because they see it as a message that LGBT people think of themselves as different and special. This is alienating people from the plight of the LGBT community for equality. Opinions can take a full swing to the opposite direction if pride gets associated (correctly or not) with displaying kinks, especially in the presence of children. Personally, despite being tolerant toward (at least a number of) kinks, I believe that none of them belong at pride or any other public space, regardless of sexual orientation. While the presence of kinks at pride seems to not be as widespread as people think, I believe even a few instances of it are doing a disfavour to the LGBT cause by reinforcing the stereotype of LGBT people as sexual deviants. Acceptance, I believe, cannot be forced (for example by legal means), because that will only breed resentment. Hopefully, exposure will gradually help dismiss those fears.

This is how we people are showing our love and appreciation and it can not be a problem, this is what pride is all about in my opinion, it goes to show that demonstrating your love to another person is a normal thing, and this is where we as a society are failing to explain this the the young people, this is as well why so many people consider this to be intrusive, but it is not it is a normal show of love and appreciation!

1. Homosexual desire is not what God originally intended. This does not mean that homosexual desire is the only thing that God did not originally intend. All of our desires have been distorted by sin. But Paul does describe both lesbian and male homosexual behaviour as “unnatural.” Some have argued that this refers to what is “natural” to the people themselves- heterosexual people engaging in homosexual activity and thereby going against their “natural” orientation. According to this view, Paul is not condemning all homosexual behaviour, but only that which goes against the person’s own sexual inclinations. But this view cannot be supported by the passage itself. The words for “natural” and “against nature” refer not to our subjective experience of what feels natural to us, but to the fixed way of things in creation. The nature that Paul says homosexual behaviour contradicts is God’s purpose for us, revealed in creation and reiterated throughout Scripture. Paul’s reference to lesbianism as well as male homosexual conduct also supports the idea that he is condemning all homosexual activity, and not just the man-boy relationships that occurred in Roman culture. The strength of Paul’s language should not make us think that homosexual conduct is the worst or only form of sinful behaviour. Paul may be highlighting it because it is a particularly vivid example, or because it was especially pertinent for his readers in Rome given their cultural context. Either way it illustrates something that is the case for all of us: as we reject God we find ourselves craving what we are not naturally designed to do. Even those desiring heterosexual sex find themselves doing so in a way that does not fully accord with the creator’s design for sex. There are no grounds in this passage for singling out homosexual people for any kind of special condemnation. The same passage indicts all of us. 2. Our distorted desires are a sign that we have turned away from God. Paul writes that alongside the gospel, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men” (Romans @). Though there will one day be a “day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed” (Romans 2:5), there is already a present-day expression of God’s anger against sin. We see God’s wrath in this: he gives us what we want. In response to the exchanges Paul has described, we see three instances of God giving societies over to live in the wreckage of our sinful desires. This is his present-day judgment against sin. We ask for a reality without him and he gives us a taster of it. In each case the “giving over” results in an intensification of the sin and the further breakdown of human behaviour. God gives humanity over to impure lusts and dishonourable bodily conduct (verse 24), and to “dishonourable passions” (verse 26). The exchanging of natural relations for unnatural leads to being given over to a “debased mind” and the flourishing of “all manner of unrighteousness” which Paul unpacks in a long list of antisocial behaviours (verse 28-31). Sin leads to judgment, but judgment also leads to further sin. The presence of all these sinful acts is a reminder that we live in a world which has deliberately turned away from God in all sorts of ways, and is therefore experiencing a foretaste of God’s anger and courting its final outpouring on the day of judgment. It is important to recognize that Paul is talking here in social rather than individual terms. He is describing what happens to culture as a whole, rather than particular individuals. The presence of same-sex desire in some of us is not an indication that we’ve turned from God more than others. But it is a sign that humanity as a whole has done so. It is not the only sign, and in everyone there is no doubt more than one sign or another. But it is a sign that human nature has been changed from what God originally intended.

Hey you guys in the video, I could be your daughter, grand-daughter, your sister or your cousin maybe. You would probably have loved me so much, accepted me with all my flaws, I would annoy you sometimes, make you laugh other times... You would hug me when I cry, when I'm hurt... You would have pardon me when I drew on the wall or peed in my bed after a nightmare when I was little... You would wish me the best, always. We would be family, we would be here for each other. Until I fall in love. I met this beautiful person, this wonderful soul. Together, we're as happy as we're never been before. But I share with you the reason of my delightfulness, you turn pale, super pale, you clearly don't smile, then turn red, I'm scared. Peace be upon you to our dearest brothers and beloved sisters, you surely need to listen to me, I just want to say that:- 1. Humanity is about as long as we bring ourselves to loves someone else, no matter what color, no matter what race, no matter what religion, and no matter what gender. Humanity just want us to be loved, and to be able to love somebody back. 2. a) Do you believe in God? Yes. And if God didn’t want them this way, He wouldn’t have made them this way. Correct! 2. b) God have made and want you this way, because He love you. So, you will get more closer and come close to God. That's why you have to learn and understand the hidden message of God. 3. God loves us beyond any and everything else, and He is the one we should love first. 4. I believe that God will please, and embraces with ours' kind and loving spirits. 5. And I will never understand why everyone has such a huge problem with them specifically in Bulgaria. 4:51 That's totally misleading and wrong. The Bulgarian constitution protects every citizen of the country equally no matter of their race, political views or sexuality. There is a law against hate crimes and it is for everyone. Bulgaria (as most of the Balkans countries) is conservative and there is nothing wrong with this. Most of the young people in the country have no problems with the LGBTQ community. You just have to understand that Eastern europeans have a different way of thinking and not approving the Pride parade is not a sign of a decline. In a conservative society you should try to find different and more appropriate solutions to the gay marriege issue because those parades are just making the things worse.

As a Christian and Bulgarian it depends on you're definition of love. Love in the bible isn't what you think. It's like a father correcting his son. A father being strict for good so his son could become a respectable man when he grows up. And, about eating pork being against other religions, well we believe that Jesus is the only way. And we follow only his teachings.

Next, ask them: - Should PDA be outlawed for straights? - Should everyone have the same human rights? Why or why not? - Is PDA a human right? - If it's not a human right, how do you have the right to do it? - If not, is it a privilege? - If it's a privilege, why do straights deserve the privilege, but gays do not? - If it's not a human right or a privilege, what is it? - If it then is a human right, shouldn't everyone have the same human rights? It will be interesting to see how many people eventually contradict themselves.

As a slavic guy from the Balkan peninsula, all I can say is that most people here and most people in Eastern Europe don't support the movement and don't emphasize with LGBT people's suppression because we are used to being under different kinds of suppression, such as: Ottoman rule, WW1 German and Bulgarian control, WW2 Nazi, Italian and again Bulgarian fascist rule, then USSR sphere of influence, communism.... For us those regimes were far more oppressing than any conservative government in Western Europe and the US. I personally find the whole LGBT thing very misleading. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate gays or lesbians or queers, they can do whatever they want with themselves, but I don't think it's a good idea to impose yourself onto other people, especially if those people have suffered much more than you can imagine.
