After my first one and a half weeks of ownership it is time to share my initial review of the brand new Honbike U4 / Uni4 with you guys. In addition to its very unique design, the U4 offers up to 100km of range, integrated lights, 4 different ride modes, magnesium wheels and a very unique design.

*Update* I have had issues with the Honbike U4 turning off after riding longer inclines (2.3km) with an error code. According to Honbike this is a software bug that only affects pre production versions of the bike. It seems like a firmware update won't be possible but a replacement with a production unit should solve the issue.

I did a test ride at Eurobike fair and its really nice, actually I did not expect that it would be so nice as it is a single speed bike. The most important is that it has hill assist sensor, so if you ride on slopes the motor gives a lot of extra power assist. I rode up very easily a 4 level parking building at Eurobike and that was amazed me because its a single speed bike. Also it very simple and easy to use an maintain, its like the iPhone for e-bikes.

Thank you very much for watching! Don't be surprised, the flickering of the Honbikes Display is only on camera and caused by the shutter speed of the GoPro. It is not visible to the eye in real life.

Like the integrated display and controls, makes it look like a smart normal bike unless your close up. Better front light and maybe integrated rear light rather than having to turn on manually would be great for its next iteration 👍🏻

Thanks for your review! Perhaps a strange question.… are the front wheel, rear wheel and seat aligned, or is the front wheel offset due to the top bar being offset to the right?

Front wheel, rear wheel and saddle are aligned. It’s just the tubes that runs (a bit) diagonally.

Thanks for sharing. I was curious to how the assist feels? Is it more like a cadence sensor (goes to top speed after few turns) or like a torque sensor (depending on the power you put on pedals)? Thanks

Hi, that's a good question. I would lean towards the second, the motor basically just makes the resistance while pedaling less depending on the mode you are in if that makes sense. It's a bit tough to describe.

Yes so far I am quite happy. After riding two trips with a total of 38km a few days ago, the battery sits currently at 56%. Therefore I am calculating a realistic range of around 80km on a single charge with a rider of my weight (88kg). 👍

How far can you really go on one charge?

I had a test drive on the U4 today. A dealer in Amsterdam has one as a demo. It is a strange sight when you look down and you see the tube between the steer and the rear wheel running away at an angle. Your whole life that tube runs right under you, but not with this bike. Very crazy, but after a day you probably don't know any better. The bike fitted fine with me. I expected that at 1.87 meters I would find the handlebars too low, but that was fine. The saddle is comfortable and the bike handles well. The tires are thicker than I expected, but that has the advantage that the tires absorb the bumps in the road well. I personally find it very annoying that the U4 does not have a force sensor, but only a rotation sensor. So as soon as you move the pedals you get the full support and that is quite substantial even at the lowest setting. You quickly reach the legal maximum speed (25 km/h) and cycling in a row with other cyclists is difficult, because you quickly go faster than desired. I'm also wondering how I'm going to lock the bike. Where do I leave a chain lock? All in all, the U4 cycles well and you are sure to get a lot of attention with that very special and beautifully designed frame. But that e-support, I don't know if I'll get used to it.

Hello, one question the speed is only up to 25 ? Did you feel when the motor stop?

This bike is so close to perfect but there is one aspect that is a deal breaker for me. The handle bars aren't adjustable or changeable. I prefer an upright position and swept back grips for cycling every day to avoid back issues.

Received confirmation today that the U4 has a rotation sensor and therefore gives the maximum support (as set) as soon as you rotate the pedals, regardless of how much force you put on them. That makes it unusable for me in city traffic where you often cycle slowly in a row. I ordered a U4 because you can return it within 14 days. I thought I could try it extensively on my normal rides and assumed that returning would be free of charge (just like with Tesla) but I saw that they charge 20% re-stocking costs. So 340,- and that's way too much for me. I'm going to cancel my order.

First you can ride as slow as you want, the motor gives support as fast as you rotate the pedal, so slow rotation slow support, also you can adjust the level of motor support through its control panel. But the most important is that it has hill assist sensor, so if you ride on slopes the motor gives a lot of extra power assist. I rode very easily a 4 level parking building in Eurobike and that was amazed me because its a single speed bike. Don't cancel the order you will regret it.

@@nvezirg Hill assist is not very helpful in my flat country, but the speed dependence might work if you get used to it. I decided to give it a try and I will give my experiendce as soon as I receive the bike. Hopefully next week or the week after.
