HONDA MODELS USING VVT VALVE 15810-R70-A04 - This Odyssey is a 2008 Touring Model with brittle gaskets in the VVT Solenoid Spool causing considerable oil leaking down the side and front of the engine (area of the alternator and camshaft timing belt) and dripping of the bottom near the serpentine belt tensioner.
Honda VVT Solenoid Spools are known to develop oil leaks with age. The VVT Solenoid Spool is generally located on the head of the engine. In this case, it is right at the oil dipstick. Various vehicle models and engines will have different types of VVT Solenoid configurations. The Touring Model may have a different VVT Solenoid than the LX and EX Models. Use your vehicle VIN number to look up the correct VVT parts for your vehicle.
Fit For:
2013-2015 for Acura RDX 3.5L V6 GAS SOHC

When the factory solenoid fails, it can lead to poor fuel economy
Some symptoms that show the solenoid valve is not functioning well:
Check engine light on,
Dirty engine oil
Roughness in idling engine
Decline in fuel efficiency

I really appreciate this, had the same problem but oil was leaking into my alternator from the VVT. Your videos really helped me fix this issue, thank you!

Dorman VVT Solenoid used on this 2008 Odyssey Touring model - Dorman 918-056 (includes the gaskets). The gaskets only may be available on Amazon. Amazon shipped the gaskets which arrived in two or three days.

Don't use any kind of sealant because it will seep out and clog the tiny oil ports in the solenoid. The gaskets have to go in dry. Also the oil leak will drip into the alternator causing it to fail.

Mine was leaking and killed my alternator. Replaced that, bought new gaskets. Thought to try tightening the bolts first and found 3 of 4 too loose. Tightened them and no leak since.

Thanks for watching! Sorry, I haven't worked on another Explorer in many years (and there are many different seat configurations) so not sure at this point. We have a local "you pull it yard" that helps me out a lot with that sort of thing. If you have one near you, maybe they would have one disassembled. Online Ford parts webpages don't seem to offer much help. I wish Ford had a good OEM parts online program giving parts break-down info. Public libraries sometimes offer access to more in-depth online repair programs they actually pay for, that might be an option for you- may be complicated to navigate though. Wish I could be of more help. Thanks Again!

Helo sir, i changed the gas kit and i was tightening the bolt but unfortunately bottom left side one bolt got free, now one top and one bottom right side bolt are tight but lower left side bolt is just moving its not tight, plz advise what should i do, i started the engine, its not leaking, but spool valve is depending on 2 bolts only.....

It sounds like the threads may be stripped in the base that is under the VVT Valve. I think it is likely the VVT Valve will begin to leak oil at some time. If the base has a stripped hole and must be replaced, you will need to be very careful to not let any broken thread particles get into your engine when you disassemble to replace any part around the VVT Valve. I would be reluctant to do any kind of re-tapping that assembly or going oversize with the bolt due to the risk of the loose threads causing major problems. It may be best to find a good Honda mechanic and have the base replaced. That is a more complicated procedure. Perhaps you can get a good Honda mechanic to check it out.

I have a fair question. Is the problem really the solenoid, or is the problem just the gaskets? I've had this engine small leak for years now, never paid any real attention because it was so small and it really didn't give me a hard time. Back in June I kinda did some mechanical updates for a long road trip ahead. I fixed the AC, new pair of strut assemblies, timing belt, (which I never changed at 100,000 and now was 157,000), and 4 new tires. My mechanic told me the engine was leaking a little oil thru the valve covers (the usual mistake), so I gave him the ok to fix it for new gaskets. 3 months and about 4,000 miles more, after an oil change, the car "increased" leaking, so I thought it was the Quick Lube place that had messed up. Took it back and while over there I discovered where the REAL leak was, the solenoid. Make a long story short... Changed the gaskets and apparently everything was good until a month later I took it to the freeway at 70mph and then it gave me Code 3497. You see, I used my car to Walmart and back from my house for more than a month, so thats why the issue never came out. I finally ordered the Dorman 918-056 and discovered many things when I received it. This is my diagnostic on my car: The original solenoid might have been wronged but the replacement gaskets I used where not the best gaskets. The first pair of replacement gaskets I ordered I returned because the "mesh filter" in one of them came crunched in the packaging. The second pair of gaskets (the ones I installed) were better looking but yet didn't look like the original ones. I still installed them and thought I had fixed it but no. When I received the Dorman solenoid.... AHHHH... what a difference. The mesh of the gaskets was perfect. You see... the mesh "basket" of the gasket needs to fit its place because if it is crunched or bent or compressed, it will get on the way of the opening which feeds it. you will notice as you pull out the gasket. These car computers are so sensitive that I am sooo sure it interferes somehow with it registering the right oil pressure, therefore, Code 3497. Today I replaced with the Dorman to cover all bases, used the old screws though, but BOTH new gaskets and metal plate that goes between. Erased the Code with my scanner and now looks good. I need to take it for a run over 70mph/3,500 rpms to see if its really working or not but... I don't foresee any issues but total correction. Total cost: $90.98 thru Amazon, in my doorstep in 24 hrs. Auto Zone thieves wanted $175.+ tax. I can save $100.

Thanks for the information! Looking back, I am happy that I went ahead with the Dorman solenoid (about $120 at O'Reilly - glad you gave the Amazon deal) as it has worked well since the work was done. Not a drop of oil leaking since. BTW, a local garage quoted $500 to replace that VVT solenoid - after they had originally estimated $110 to do a "gasket replacement". Thanks Again, and for your comments also!

I didn't want to get away from OEM parts, but cost and getting it going quickly was the priority. I feel like just gaskets would have fixed it, but were 5 days away. It seems to be working out fine with no check lights reported. Thanks for watching!

I have heard that gasket sealer can gum up the tiny oil passages. Could that be the problem? Thanks for watching!

Honda's r good cars, but this is a stupid design having the VVT Solenoid above the alternator. I have a 2011 Accord V6, the 2 gaskets had a small slow leak which dripped down on my alternator n fried the alternator. Honda does not sell the gaskets separately, u have to buy the whole VVT Solenoid. $250+ Shame shame on u Honda !!
