That was my first street motorcycle when I was 16yo and got my motorcycle learner's permit; a 1970 Honda CL450 K3 in red (they were blue as well). This was a real nice bike for a high school kid. "Get your motor runnin'. Head out on the highway! Looking for adventure and whatever comes our way... Born to be wiiiild..." I was so much cooler back then. The CB 450 in this video is a 1971 I believe. The CB 450 had the front disc brake since 1970; nice. The Honda 450 was an important motorcycle. It was Honda's first "big bike" and the first Japanese 4 stroke motorcycle that could run with the British 650 twins of the day. The Honda 450 handled down a twisty road MUCH better than the CB 750 IMO.

I had this bike! Same color, I put over 9000 miles on it before going into the Army in September 73. Loved this bike!

I owned one in 1976, green and black, and took it all over. It was powerful and smooth. I came back from a plane trip and drove it to meet some friends and came home jet lag tired. I forgot to lock the forks and came out later that night and it was gone. Still stings. I replaced it several months later with the 750. But, to be honest, I think I liked the 450 better.

In the 70's, I had a 1970 CL450 in red. ( Scrambler ) As senior would say, " Typical Honda reliability, fit, & finish. "

Candy garnet brown. IMO, the best color ever on a motorcycle. My '71 750 Four was the same. Beautiful, but when they start to fade, a greenish tint appears.

Very few people know that these (the 450's) don't have valve springs, per sei. They have torsion springs that open and close the valves. When I was 15, I thought that was bizarre...haha, at 65 I still do 🙂

@@larrynorsworthy8582 not even close (most) Ducati's have a Desmodromic valve system. They are mechanically opened and closed. This puppy has a twisting shaft to operate the valves

Hi Ken that 450 is one cool find! I loved those bikes! As being an old Honda Tech i have worked on quite a few of those! Those motors were unique with the double overhead cam and a torshion bar valve spring set up instead of a coil spring and they could still turn 10,000 rpm with no problem! Cool old bikes! Nice find!

I bought a 1971 CB450 in 1972 with 5000 miles, with gold tank but black stripe. Later, I picked up a Triumph Daytona 500. The Triumph was the end of a long evolution and the Honda was the future. On backroads, the Triumph was fun, for long miles the Honda ruled. A real time machine, the bike and the Museum. 👍

O love the old Honda twins! They looked and sounded awesome! My dad had a '67 450 he made a "chopper" out of. I don't personally remember it, but my dad told me about all the good times he had on it before it got stolen in 1972 (right after I was born). It was last seen in an apartment complex in Orono Maine. Awesome as always Ken! Thank you for keeping these machines alive.

The valves don’t use traditional valve springs to get every RPM out of the engine. The valves have TORSION BARS for springs. Very cool.

Those Candy Garnet Brown CB tanks always faded on the top and ended up with a green tint for some reason. Same with the tops of the plastic side covers and headlight. Maybe an oxidation of the metallic element in the paint? Have had a CB750K1 since new that came with that color. It became quite "green" as it aged even though it was mostly kept indoors. When we repainted it 20 years ago we did it in another Honda OEM color, Planet Blue Metallic. New blue K1s were extremely rare in the US. I was told by a former Honda USA sales manager from that K1 era that they would order them but most of the blue ones ended up in the UK, Germany and France. What usually ruined the paint on most of those bikes was brake fluid from the master cylinder. Finding an original undamaged one is a real treasure. Almost an impossible rarity.
@lorenzoasnaghi15812 жыл бұрын
Planet blue metallic was a K2 paint. On K1 there was "polynesian blue metallic" EG ref on the parts list ;-) which was the same CB 450 K4 blue paint (same year as 750 K1, 1971) cheers

I seem to recall that a gripe against this bike was that the throttle was grabby: sticks then grabs hard. Any comment? To me, short of the DOHC 750s of 1981, this was the best-looking bike Honda (or anyone) ever made. Thanks for this video!
@stevezelev7008 Жыл бұрын
"grabby"? It was surprisingly torquey for a 450cc. I never remember any throttle problems(I had a new 72 450). Maybe lube that throttle cable?
