Thanks for taking the time to shoot this video as you changed the oil.

I just bought a 1982 Nighthawk 450, my first bike, it runs awesomely. The PO told me to use Diesel Oil (oil meant for diesel engines), I took a picture of what he had used, it was "Shell Rotella T6 Synthetic 5W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil". He seemed to know lots about bikes and he used to work at one of the largest motorcycle dealerships in the area. He told me other bikes had an engine tick that was likely caused by using the wrong oil; this one doesn't so I'll stick with that.

synthetic oil will kill your clutches. Use shell T4 mineral oil. Change oil and filter every 1500 miles. Smile till your face breaks!

I liked my first bike, a cb450sc. It was a poor shaped oil o-ring for a gasket. At least it was easy to access.

Excellent video thanks for the help I just got an 82 night hawk 450 and was confused about how to change the filter as it isn’t a screw on one.

Ordinary motor oil is fine for a motorcycle engine. It doesn't effect the clutch in any way. Although i have heard synthetic oils can cause a wet clutch to slip.

I have read the owners manual from this bike and many other bikes and i have never seen one specify anything other than regular motor oil
@OlympischbriesjeNadaAverage11 жыл бұрын
why don't you drain all the oil?
@joemac35611 жыл бұрын
No, automotive oil is not fine for motorcycles. Just because you got away with using it only means the clutch springs are strong and the plates are still grabby enough, but you're supposed to use the CORRECT oil. I've been a technician for over 45 years, and I'm telling it to you straight.

You can use walmart oil all you want but the stuff meant for cars is gonna tear up your clutch... What you want is diesel oil.
@CampbellJ19 жыл бұрын
You need to run it for a few seconds maybe 10 or 15 and the check it again because you have to run the oil through the oil filter and if you do it the way this guy did it then you will be running with low oil and that's not great

James Campbell you're totally right

Wrong oil- that's for cars. You need to use oil that meets the 'JASO/JAMO' specs. You don't want to use automotive oil in a bike that has a wet clutch.

the oil used in this video is wrong.. u can use car oil but only ones with out the friction modifiers.. usually diesel oil works.. but need to meet or exceed the motorcycle requirements

The original Honda owners manual calls for 10w-40 motor oil. So unless you have an actual reason as to why this is the wrong oil, i'm going to continue using it.
@caseyzugmaier38369 жыл бұрын
Alex's Bikes and Motors A motorcycle uses what is called a wet clutch. There are special additives in motorcycle oils to counteract the high friction from the clutch and the thermal breakdown from the high heat of air cooled motors. So all in all it extends the life of the motor and clutches.
@alexsbikesandmotors9 жыл бұрын
Casey Zugmaier That may be true, but i see no reason why convention motor oil is "wrong". Specialty motorcycle oil is significantly more expensive than regular motor oil, and if Honda says it's fine to use in their bikes, i'm sure it is.
@caseyzugmaier38369 жыл бұрын
Honda gn4 which is their motorcycle oil isn't that exspensive.

if all of the "know it all" armchair mechanics took a look under the seat of one of these bikes, the sticker clearly states 10w30 oil,plug # and gap as well as other info... 10w30, regular motor oil for vehicles
