I took the 2024 Honda CBR650R e clutch along half of Simon Weir's 'South East 500' route, to test out the bike and this new e-clutch system.
Nearly 300 miles later, what're my thoughts?

Thanks for a great review. I went to the motorcycle live show at the NEC yesterday (16/11/2024) with desires for the CBR 600RR. After sitting on that with its race position compared with the more comfortable and upright position of the 650, plus this review, I reckon I’m sold. Brilliant review. Scenic, comprehensive and great footage. Thanks and great work!

That E-Clutch would work wonders on an adventure / dual sport bike. No low speed stalls on steep, tricky dirt sections but can still slip the clutch when needed during low speed tight maneuvers. Brilliant.

@@Jlk-rm1jv You'd hold a little throttle on to stop the roll back as you would with any other clutchless transmission such as Honda's DCT and maybe use some front brake to help hold position if needed. Off road you'd probably need to disable rear wheel traction control though, or else you'd end up rolling back in slippery conditions as the rear wheel would refuse to keep driving against the slipping and sliding.
@dungbeetle.

@@Jlk-rm1jv Yes. If the engine is off and the bike is left in gear, the clutch engages and the bike won't roll backwards or forwards, just the same as with a conventional motorcycle gearbox (and as demonstrated by TMF in his video on the Honda CB650R's E-Clutch).

The e-clutch is fabulous. I got used to it pretty much immediately. It worked perfectly for me at every rev/speed and from a standstill. Having the clutch as an option is also great. Far more versatile and controllable than DCT. IF I can sell my Hornet, I'm buying the naked CB650R with it.

I got mine March 1st. Non e-clutch. First bike after 30 years off riding. I wanted something that looked amazing and turned heads, had that old skool power ( tzr250 previous bike). Also being the opposite of you. 5' 4" 28" inside leg, I can actually touch the ground on this which was great to find out at the dealer. So I ordered it. As an all round bike I think it's great. Super fun when you wind it up over 8k. Nice and calm lower down. Add the sports pack and a tail tidy and it looks fantastic. I am super happy with it. 2.5k miles so far and enjoyed every ride. Great review over a nice ride. Also enjoyed your advanced commentary in sections. 👍.

Yeah, I'm sold! I ride a dct at the moment and whilst I love it, I do miss being able to blip the throttle in traffic. I've got a mildly dodgy left knee, but a very dodgy left wrist, so lots of clutch work is a bastard for me personally. Shame your bike seems to have an issue with the display though 😅

I'm sure it is a nice bike, but, I bought a 2007 sprint 1050 in 2014 for about a third of the price of this bike and I'm still riding it today. Fantastic bike. Being a largish triple, I don't need to rag it to get the smiles. Lots of new bikes on the market, but there are many much better bikes available for less money on the used market. Great review Bruce but I wouldn't recommend going down this route to get bang for your buck. I live in the environs of the A32/A272 and you can blame the MP Flick Drummond for the average speed cameras, she and her elitist friends didn't like to hear motorcycle riders enjoying themselves. How dare they have fun, absolutely not allowed.!!!
@MV-XD2

I bought a bike twenty years ago and it was about half the price of your sprint. So what? And the average speed cameras are because of so many d*ckhead power rangers with limited skill on sports bikes doing 100+ mph, binning it and getting scraped off the road. If you live nearby you would have heard them every single weekend and summer evening. It’s the sneaky dropping of speed limits all over the country by idiot councils that think everyone has to ride/drive at bicycle speeds as it’s more “green” that is the real problem.

Nice one Bruce, short of jumping on it myself,you pretty much made me feel like I'd had most questions covered. I think that e clutch for the price is just amazing, gives you best of all worlds really and I'm sure you could have the throttle tuned, to get rid of any snatching. It just looks amazing in that colour too. I'm from the era of keeping it in the rev range, so for me it would be a blast, screaming it. Pretty decent sound out of it too and as you said, all for under 9 grand 😮

I love the idea of the e clutch! Like you mentioned, best of both worlds. Being able to clutch during low speed manoeuvres or off road with the added bonus of not needing to in traffic plus basically a quick shifter as well?!? Amazing. I wish they could retrofit. Not necessarily worth buying a new bike for but if I'm ever out to replace my bebe, I'll be looking for an e clutch model for sure! ❤️🏍️

Good explanation of an E-bike I didn't know exactly what it was. To me it seems a bit like cruise control it takes over but is reluctant to give the control back if you know what I mean. Haha. I have a CBF600 and I find that exactly the same as what you are saying you have to make it scream to get the full potential out of the bike, and I find it very vibey. I'm now constantly looking at the boxer engine and the GS which I have never considered before. Your Fault Haha ride safe and look after your own. 👍

Years and years back I was loaned one of the then new jelly mold cbr600s. My gsx11 was in the shop and I set off on a fairly new little 600. It was comfy and seemed to have plenty of power, I thought why do I need an 1100? I got onto the motorway and all was well until I went to roll the throttle on in top gear to overtake. Nothing, absolutely nothing happened. Changed down a gear and still virtually nothing. Changed down again and regained done acceleration. It wasn't until the revs got really high that normal service resumed. All in all it was a great little bike but I was glad to get the big gsx11 back!

The USB part, from what I understand there's accessory ports you can set up that are fused up so they only drain when the bike is on. My impression is the USB always charges, which might be an issue if you're like me and use a QuadLock with a wireless charger (those things vampire a bit). I'm trying to find specifics about all of it because I already put a deposit down on one of these. Either way, coming to this from an SV650 so I'm pretty excited. Sounds like my SV is gonna have had more oomph low down but that this will be better at pretty much everything else.

Great tour of the sarff coast, lovely flowing vid', more please. Electronic clutch looks ugly sticking out like that, looks aftermarket, looses points on that. Perfect for a motor cyclist who has lost their left hand. Other than that it feels like Honda patented it, then struggled to find a use for it when compared with their excellent DCT. Maybe they will combine the two on other models when they launch a hybrid?

I know one of the complaints of the outgoing model was that 1st and 2nd were geared fairly long, which put a bit of a damper on the 30-100mph fun; where do 1st and 2nd top out at? How's e-clutch in a stop-start environment? Is it as smooth as properly feathering or is there significant jerkiness? (looks like 7:00 this is indirectly covered. Butter!)

The Helite vests have good coverage but their performance is awful when left in the wardrobe. My buddy does the same. I think it's due to the protective covering on them thst makes them heavy and restrictive on airflow. I'm still convinced my inner airvest is the best solution for me. Most of the noise is going backwards not forwards and given the soundproofing of modern cars it's incredibly ineffective.
