I think this is probably the best video I've seen on this task. I like how he talks calmly and he seems relaxed, believe it or not that helped me because I was nervous, this is the first time I've replaced a water pump!

Awesome work man ! I just picked one of these up with 110k miles for $400. It has had hail damage which does not bother me. It runs like new and has been maintained well. But at 110k I need to get this timing done. Looks pretty intense. My mechanic quoted $664 to do it all. Water pump, belt, tensioner, cam seals and all related parts. I may go that route since I got the car so cheap. But I have enjoyed your video

Mine’s way overdue for a change but I don’t know what the cost is to pay someone to do it. At some point, you may as well drive it till it quits. Paying $500-$800 for this on a $1,200 car that is 20 years just ain’t worth it.

Yes, it's good to do yourself if possible. A Gates timing bel kit is less than $100 shipped. Get a Fel-Pro valve cover gasket set for $40 too and consider changing camshaft + front crankshaft seals too for $10 each.

first time with a foreign car Honda. Too much just to take a water pump. Ridiculous. But anyway great video thank you. Back in the days with my Buick, 1-2-3 water pump out no problem. 10 min job

Ya, for that one bolt on the alternator, just lift that side of the engine a few inches and you can get the bolt right out :) Put a jack with a LARGE piece of wood under the oil pan (oil pan isn't meant to hold the engine up so you need to spread the weight around to avoid denting thepan...)

Does my car have to be level to do this job? Or can I just lift up the one wheel and be good? Please let me know because I only have 2 Jack stands
@Ryan.......4 жыл бұрын
It's probably too late for you, but I can't think of any reason it has to be level. You might experience more of a messy coolant spill when you remove the water pump, but if you drain the cooling system first that shouldn't be an issue.
@Greg4g633 жыл бұрын
Car does not have to be perfectly level.

Great video but i have a question... What about if I have to replace only the water pump.. Do I have to line up the timing mark on the camshaft?
@ImaLoneWolfintheWoods5 жыл бұрын
Always a good idea to have them lined up
@Greg4g633 жыл бұрын
If you're replacing waterpump the timing belt has to come off. And unless your timing belt + tensioner are very new then now is the time to buy a timing belt kit from Gates which includes, waterpump, timing belt, + tensioner $80-$90 shipped from RockAuto (2021).

Hi, thank you for the video, it is really good and I've used your other guide before and found it very helpful! I have the same engine in my Honda Stream 2002, and I seem to be having a strange noise and lots of vibration coming seemingly from the AC compressor. I would like to ask you something: It seems in this video that the belt for the AC compressor also runs the alternator? Is there a way to disconnect the AC compressor and render it unoperational until I have it fixed?
@Greg4g633 жыл бұрын
On the Civic shown in this video you can simply buy a non-A/C alternator belt to bypass the A/C compressor. I've done it on my '05 civic dx.

How do I know if the timing belt is tight enough? Seems kinda loose.

My top alternator mounting bolt is stripped and keeps coming out from the vibration of the engine. I tried using lock tight to secure it but it continues to come out. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the video. Question: What did you exactly say at 9:39? "Given you ... " Do I just need to ensure that all the marks are aligned or do I need to make sure that #1 valve is at the top position? Appreciate the help!
@myRatchets10 жыл бұрын
"Given your car ran fine before.." I was trying to say if you are doing a timing belt replacement on a car that ran fine and not one with a timing belt that has jumped or been damaged. If your car ran fine, line up the timing mark on the Camshaft, by doing that your crank will line up too..gl

I broke Craftsman breaker bar. If you lucky you release if not you break. To be sure, only impact tools will work.
@stuarttw225 жыл бұрын
Why do they make it so hard to replace? That sucks especially for a belt that's going to need to be replaced at 100,000 miles. Because if you wait for it to break the engine is done.
@ColoradoStreetboarding3 жыл бұрын
Right! I did this repair and after a while started having issues and it threw a P1129 code. Well upon reading it seems like even after you put on a new timing belt, it can jump 1 or 2 spots…. And make the vehicle run sluggish or even into limp mode… now I may have to take this crap all apart again. Ugggg

Remind me never to buy a Honda Civic 1.7L SOHC. Sheeze! Probably better to go with a Toyota VVT motor that has a timing chain that doesn't need replacing until 400K
