I am replacing cylinder head gasket on my 2003 Honda civic ex, a 1.7 vtec sohc 16 valve engine and have watched numerous videos. I am most grateful for urs, cuz u go step by step, not over simplified but correct instruction, with great visual, which is way a plus! Thanks so much!

What was the length of the breaker bar socket extension at 1:09, going into the wheel well? Thanks for the video, and not using an Impact wrench to remove the pulley.

Hello! Great tutorial! I was following it step by step but I had a problem. I broke two extensions when trying to take the crank bolt off. Just for you information, the car has the original belt. So that bolt was never been removed in 11 years. So, my question it would be: Were the socket and extension 3/4 or 1/2? If they were 1/2 I need to buy better ones.. haha. Thanks in advance. Regards.

Is there any reason I cannot break the crank bolt loose first, before disassembling everything? It seems like I could break it loose then tighten it up again to turn the motor. Obviously, if I can't get the crank bolt loose it's a deal breaker on the timing belt replacement. Thank you for the great video.

Dear sir Greetings from Finland. I just bought a Honda stream 1.7 which apparently have a similar engine as yours. (not too sure though). I have noticed oil leak coming out under the black plastic covering the timing belt pulley down on the block. My question is, as you open up all the gargets in this timing belt area, (as l see you did in the video) is there an oil seal somewhere inside or near the water pump? Or where could the oil be possibly coming out from? Please kindly help as this is driving me crazy. I could send you pictures if possible. (your email add will be appreciated). Lots of oils pours out when engine is warm. Please help me. Thanks

Yes, inspect crankshaft front seal and oil pump areas. Oil can leak from those obviously.

What cleaner did you use to spray after you took off the old water pump? Did you use "CRC 20 oz 05084 BRAKLEEN Brake Parts Cleaner-Non-Chlorinated" to spray?

Why did you skip the remainder of installing the tensioner? At the end of part 3 you're beginning to install the tensioner, and at the beginning of part 4 it's already installed. How do you make sure it is oriented in the correct position?

My 01 with 170k died while I was driving and as I was waiting on roadside I looked up a few things and read about the crank sensor and how itll run if you unplug it. At 1st I wass unplugging the cam shaft sensor and it would start but run really bad with bad throttle response and then I found the crank sensor on bottom and it started and almost ran perfect besides a slightly rough idol and I read it either had bad sensor or slightly jumped time. When I started it I didnt hear any engine noise or clacking so I knew more than likely it didnt jump time and or was hitting the valves but 2 month prior i left the oil cap loose and it came off and about a half qt or so of oil blew out over a month and the timing cover and around the oil cap was covered. I got a new cap but hadnt pressure washed the engine off yet and I'm wondering if a little bit of oil got on the timing belt and did make it jump 1 tooth.

I am not sure why you back set the cam timing when removing the HB bolt. The belt would still be in "time" with the cam and the crank gear that holds the belt.

That spring for the tensioner should be reversed 180°. The pointy part will claw at the timing belt and shred it. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

+Gilbert Baldwin You can remove the valve cover, then with the car jacked up, go to the driver's side front wheel, and you'll see a whole, you can turn counter-clockwise.

I have the top wheel at Top Dead Center, but I cant see the marking on the harmonic balancer, if the top wheel is at TDC, then the harmonic balancer should be on the mark automatically, right? Great work btw! I have a Honda EX so the damn ABS is in the way making this job a bit harder.
@StreetMusicians
@StreetMusicians 7 жыл бұрын
I was eventually able to see the harmonic balancer lined up, but only briefly. I jsut lined up TDC from the top of the engine and everything worked out fine. Also that ABS was an extra pain in the ass but I worked aorund it without completely removing it, just loosened it. Good luck!

oops, the head of the bolt broke while screwing one of the long bolts of the water pump. I have the abs breaks so it's a tight spot. it's the lower left hole that has a piece of the bolt inside. any ideas how to get that off? thx.

My bolt for the harmonic balancer pulley snapped off inside the bolt hole! Fingers crossed that don't happen to anyone who reads this comment. Also don't lose your key to the pulley, mine fell into a hole in the frame of the car of all places. Had to make one from a piece of key stock. Total nightmare of a job for me. Better luck to others who do this.

yes! always change water pump when doing timing belt. because if you do the timing belt, and water pump goes out 10k miles later, you'll have to do the whole job again.

Just like in other videos I've seen on timing belt changes. When the crank pulley bolt gives, it sounds like something broke. Takes a long lever to get enough leverage on that thing.

Sure it did, thats what impacts do. But tell me, how did the spray lube do anything to help? What makes you think the lube made it do anything?
@Peter-pv8xx
@Peter-pv8xx 5 жыл бұрын
@@JM-yx1lm I don't, but I figured it wouldn't hurt, I also spray down all bolts ahead of a job if I can mainly on my own vehicles, I rebuilt the front suspension on my 97 s10 and long before I started I once in a while would spray every nut and bolt, they weren't particularly rusty but it gave it time to work, I figure anything's to make the job go smoother.
