In this first installment of our Honda CRF450 engine rebuild project, we’ll show you how to remove the engine on your CRF450. A lot of bolts here, and we’ll tackle them one at a time starting with draining the fluids and then removing the fuel tank and rear fender. From there, we’ll start peeling things back to get down to the engine. We’ll remove the exhaust, the radiators, get the carburetor and clutch disconnected, and remove the ignition coil.
Then, we’ll get after the engine mounting bolts.
Pay attention starting at around the 17:30 mark. This motor is a tight fit in the frame. John will show you how you’ll need to turn the motor to get it to come out.
We'll tear down the top end of the engine in part two: • Honda CRF450 Top End T...

Enjoyed this. Went through similar fun in the past. I actually had a swingarm bolt on a YZ85 I rebuilt that had such a step worn into it that I couldn't pound it out. Well, at the time, I didn't know the step was what was holding me up. I carefully cut it by hand with a hacksaw blade on both sides of the swingarm, knowing I was going to replace whatever needed replacing in that area. I swear it took what felt like half a day. In hindsight, it would have been easier to drill the alignment tab off and find a way to rotate the step to the other side or use an air hammer and hope to dislodge it. I like how you put it, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Some WD-40 or oil would help to remove that rusted Swing arm Bolt.

Need an air hammer and an old nut on that one stuck bolt. Curious, are you gonna put it on a wire wheel and reuse it or replace it?

pretty similiar, the engines are a bit different, but just remember how you parted everything out and make some pics to see where everything goes, and you should be set.

I found this from the Honda Grom series, but since it's older I figured I'd ask here.. can you all (if still taking requests/suggestions) take a 2022 model KLR 650 and try to just swap out however many parts you need to get good girl economy? The KLR 650 has a stereotype for being owned by cheapskates who are in love with their unkillable motorcycle, so how about seeing what can be done to still do ~80mph (or 70 mph at very lowest) BUT have a high mpg number? The USMC took some Kawasaki KLR 650s and slapped on Diesel engines and saw 90-100mpg *varied once loaded down. , So I'm curious to see what could be done on the consumer market to make a beloved bike into a VERY fuel efficient bike.
