Honda CRV Build Out || Full Summer Tour

Thanks for sharing your build. Being a CRV owner as well, I would have loved to see how you packed 5 days worth of food and then some gear in the spare Tire compartment. I will look into the space myself.

Just bought a 2011 Honda CR-V 90,0000 miles and I’m so excited :) I’d love to start doing this but have no idea how to start or where I would go lol. I’d like to travel with other people too but don’t know anyone who wants to give this a try. How did you decide to start living like this? Also what advice would you give to someone who doesn’t know where to start :o?

All great questions! First of all, congratulations! I first decided to live like this out of necessity, I wasn't making enough to afford rent. Then, I fell in love with the lifestyle and the freedom it creates. Freedom from leases, from being tied down, and freedom to escape whenever you need to. If I had to do it all over again, I'd start by getting rid of as much as possible. Analyze every aspect of your life and eliminate the belongings you can--but be sure to strike a balance between healthy living and minimalist living. If you get rid of things you actually can't live without then you'll be miserable. Everyone is different. For me, I can't live without my guitar, but that may not be the case for everyone! Being a guide greatly helped me on my journey into this lifestyle by giving me the skills I need to survive in the backcountry, and the know-how to utilize the gear I have. If you aren't already, I'd take a look at some backpacking content to get an idea of what kind of systems you'll need to have a happy life. Sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water filter, merino, etc. Many, many, maaaaannny people get wrapped up in the elitist mindset that you need to have a $50k buildout to be comfortable. My most memorable nights in my CRV are the ones where I had to be creative and use what little I had. Remember that simpler is sweeter in almost every case. Thanks again for the video. The best advice I’ve herad about keeping cool is to get a Pirus, I guess other hybrids wuld also work, you can set the AC and it wil run off the battery. The engine will start up when the battery is low. I’m told that it uses about a gallon for a night.

Would love to hear about how you have dealt with solar, I work in the film industry and just need to be able to set up camp in random places, cause I am cheap and don’t want to pay for hotels. I just need a fan in the summer and a bit of heat in winter, charge a phone and iPad, all that business and probably a composting toilet. Ha! Excited to have found your channel me crv lover.

Yeah! Good question. I'll first encourage you to read up a bit more about solar, I don't want to burst your bubble but heating and cooling are extremely energy intensive and so utilizing electronic temperature regulating systems like air conditioning and heating are generally not realistic with solar, especially if you're limited to the one or two panels you could fit on a car. That's why I don't have an air conditioner, but a fan instead. In the winter I bundle up real tight in two sleeping bags, a 25 degree bag INSIDE of a 0 degree bag, covered with a few blankets. I also wear lots of wool and pleeeeenty of layers. Sometimes I'll warm up with some candles inside. I'm not going to lie, shoulder seasons are best because in the dead of winter or the dog days of summer...it can be a bit grueling. I also encourage you to switch full time to using a composting toilet before you move into your car with one. Been there, done that. Nowadays I carry a collapsable military shovel (you can see it in the roof rack in this video) and some toilet paper or fashion a bidet out of a squeeze cap on top of my water bottle. There isn't much space in here and the last thing you want to do is knock over a composting toilet. The other consideration with a composting toilet is where are you going to compost it? Most community gardens and community composting centers will not accept human or animal waste, and tossing your compost bag into a random dumpster is a surefire way to give this community a bad name. I'm not saying that you would do any of these things, but I am saying that I've seen it and that's one of the reasons you generally don't see composting toilets in these rigs. As far as solar, please reply to this if I don't answer your question and I'd be more than happy to clarify or connect you with the resources that might help. The panel I have on top is a single 175 watt panel. Inside I have that running to a 12V, 100 Amp hour battery. The power runs through both a charge controller and an inverter to convert the DC power to AC power and make it usable for me. I don't have any trouble running my phone and laptop off of this, as long as I am careful. Running drain programs will quickly deplete your battery. When I'm editing videos I make sure to either do it while the sun is shining brightly and the weather is warm, or I go to the library or a friend's house. Very cool seeing someone with the exact same vehicle, even the color, do a build out. Do you just sleep on those foam camping pads? No bed?

What a crazy day it would be if our build outs crossed paths in the same vehicle! I use two 2x1.5 ft sections of memory foam that I scavenged on top of the camping pads now. It is SO much more comfortable that way for me, since I sleep on my side. Those camping pads work great for insulating and sleeping on the ground, but they're really no match for the hard board in the cargo section of the CRV. So, now I have the two camping pads stacked on top one another under the foam pads. I think just the two pads would work if you sleep on your back, though. Thanks for the question!

How did you get bars on top your CR-V? Trying to find an affordable option for my 2013

Hey! Some CRV's come with stock bars, as mine did. But I know some other folks who have done it themselves, and someone who salvaged the bars from a wrecked CRV and brought it to a body shop. I think they paid about $300 to have them mounted and it took a few days. Thanks for subscribing:)

I have a 2008 Honda crv suv, do anyone on here knows how to get the front seats to fold back all the way down flat? I heard suvs can turn it into loungers after removing the headrests, it didn't work for me? This current video is awesome btw.
