I don't normally wear gloves, but safety glasses are an absolute must. At the minimum sunglasses when using power tools.

Agreed! I work in an industry that always promotes proper PPE and I need to make sure I promote this practice on my channel. In my next episode, I will make sure to wear safety glasses when using the saws. In case someone else didn't say it, the correct pronunciation is "lu-on". A cheap mahogany from the Philippines. 40 years ago the logs where loaded abroad ship and the veneers produced during passage but I don't know if that is still the case.

Interesting build! I have a 2021 Crosstrek Sport that I camp and overland out of. I use a 4"x75"x25" foam mattress I got off Amazon .. Olee Tri-Fold memory foam mattress .. I use some old towels to fill in that small bump at the tray. I also have my cooking gear and the like in one 50 qt Plano plastic and my food in another. They both go outside when i'm stopped for the night. I found living in the car and being restricted by a storm for two days you want the maximum amount of 'Me' room as possible. 🤠

I'm in a 2011 Forester. The front seats lay completely flat, level with the laid flat back seats. So one sheet of plywood does the job along with some sticks to acommodate with the front seat's back rest.. My plywood is only less than a half inch in thickness and I bet this would have done greatly too in your build, since your seperate pieces are only 24 inches wide and long. Would have made an even lighter package. These ways of making a sleeping platform are so much better and comfortable than the short ones in combination with the vertical back rests of the front seats 😁. I wonder if you'd be able to adjust the mount of the front seat a bit forward, if it would also lay more level flat with the back seats' back rests and make your build obsolete. This would lower the bed, leaving you with more headroom in the car.

You’re the third person to comment on the gloves. I find it interesting as well because I never gave it any thought until everyone began bringing it to light. My father is a carpenter and he never wears gloves and I never wore them either helping him throughout my adolescence and into adulthood. I only ever remember putting on a pair when conducting demo when there were dramatically sharp objects like glass or all plaster and tile with that metal mesh. I put them on during a time when I was slipping a lot with the screwdriver and stabbing myself in the fingers. Every time it happened again, I would think I should be wearing gloves and I guess it stuck. Funny thing is I don’t wear them all the time. I do still wear a glove on my left hand when steadying a screw. On my next build I won’t wear them and I will do my best to keep it up. Minus the glove on my left hand while using the screwdriver. Without gloves is not that big a deal safety wise. I do it all the time as gloves are cumbersome and can effect the feel you need a lot of the times. Nice ideas you have. I am making an 8 foot for my Crosstrek.

Gloves are a hindrance with a handsaw or drill/screwdriver. I pre-drill holes, that way wood doesn't split or splinter and no slippage putting in screws.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, REI has done a fantastic job with that “Tailgate Vehicle Sleeping Platform.” It should fit fine in the Crosstrek. You might have to rig something towards the front. You could just make a brace like I did for my platform. The only issue for me is that it’s not long enough. I am 6’ 3” and you also need room for a pillow which is why I made that folding platform so long. Honestly, it could be a bit shorter. I just wanted to see how long I could make it. If it’s long enough for you, I would just buy that REI platform. If you’re a member, you will get 10% back in dividends. You don’t need the 40” wide one. The 25” one is one inch wider then my build and that’s plenty of room. Stay tuned for more builds once it gets a little cooler down here in Texas.

In Episode 30, I show the use of this platform with the smaller built cargo box which holds my food and I put my clothing in a bag which fits inside the folded platform. Keep in mind, I typically only do overnight trips. In Episode 26, I pair the folding platform with the built 48” drawer which has more than enough room for all the things you mentioned. In my next episode, I will work on a new platform for added cargo for longer trips so stay tuned. It’s just been so hot lately that I haven’t felt like building anything.

Gloves can get caught up in blades and other tools. It's safer to go without when using power tools. Gloves also give a false sense of security and can cause you to misjudge how close your meaty bits are to spinning steel. Also, no glove will not protect you from spinning steel. But gloves can save you from splinters, bruises, and busted knuckles when using hand tools. Don't apologize and always assess your own risk in each individual situation. No two scenarios are identical. Now eye protection, on the other hand... Eye pro is never optional. You only have two and docs aren't great at replacing them yet. Take good care of them and they'll get you through until the end. Safety first, ho-oah.

You are 100% correct! For drilling in screws, handling rough items, and using a hand saw they are great, but they could most definitely be a hazard when working in other scenarios. Your referenced story is awful and I am so sorry this happened to your Father. Was he able to have it reattached? Why would you saw with gloves? What is your thinking behind gloves? If you look at a real carpenter tell me how many do you see with gloves? Maybe I’m old but gloves take away dexterity and feeling. So someone that is inexperienced would be in more danger of getting hurt with gloves on. Just saying I’ve been a mechanic and welder for 30+ years even did iron working. Only used gloves for certain jobs. But I’m from the days of real men doin real work.

LOL! Love it! This is a great question. Come to think of it, my Dad who is a seasoned carpenter NEVER wore gloves. I worked with him throughout my younger years and I only ever wore gloves when we were doing demo. I think I started to wear them in my builds because I have slipped with the drill, Dremel, and hand saw enough that having a pair of gloves on has prevented small but annoying injuries and kept me from getting splinters. You’re right about dexterity, as I always seem to take them off when using the sharpie. I am also not consistent, but will give it more thought on future builds. Thank you for watching and commenting. I never gave that much thought plus I coat everything with that Poly-stain which might not be good for me either. No issues yet. I will take this into consideration on the next build. What wood do you suggest that doesn’t produce an off-gassing potential?

I would suggest any wood for indoor use (with natural colors). Keep in mind that Home Depot refuses to cut chemically treated woods (greenish looking) inside the store, so it shows how potential harmful it can be if breathed in. I also wasn't sure about the strength of the head piece which doesn't have a dedicated support leg toward the front. But in general folding bed is a great idea, perfected by legs of different heights to make it leveled! I enjoyed watching your build process.
