Honda CT 110 - Replacing The Cam Chain Part 2

How to change a worn CT 110 timing chain part 2. In this video we fit the cam chain, the tensioner & set the cam timing. All without removing the cylinder head. Plus the mystery of the two extra timing marks on the flywheel is revealed.
If you're having trouble refitting the camshaft, ensure the tensioner plunger has been pushed back to allow as much slack chain as possible. Other causes can be a tight tappet & the cylinder head not torqued down.
Torque Settings - Pulse Rotor Bolt 6-9 ft lbs
Cam Sprocket Bolts 7-9 ft lbs
Guide Roller Bolt 7-10 ft lbs
Flywheel Nut 43-51 ft lbs
Basic hand tools plus a puller (6v or 12v type) for the flywheel, JIS screwdriver, impact driver & JIS bits, a strap or some other means of holding the flywheel when loosening/tightening the nut & a torque wrench.

Also when fitting a new timing chain you'll need to wind out the adjuster screw (the one holding the springs into the plunger) until it's just below the level of the case & the plug screws over it. This will reset the adjustment back to minimum & can be re-adjusted as needed as the chain wears.

I ended using a rattle gun as you mentioned. I was a bit nervous about it as I didn't know how to get it to the right tension... I first tried locking the brakes and then additionally having a friend sit on the back ... Didn't work.... Also tried strapping the rear wheel to the frame but something (I think in the engine) was still slipping, so that didn't work either... In the end, I _did_ use a rattle gun but first set it to the lowest setting and tightened a loosened wheel nut. Then checked the tension with a torque wrench... Increased the setting on the rattle gun and remeasured with the torque wrench... Once I had the torque wrench clicking I used the same setting in the rattle gun to tighten the fly wheel nut :)

I kicked the bike over for the first time on the weekend and it started first go :) Pretty happy as it was the first time I've worked in on an engine and learnt a lot splitting the case and replacing the piston, cylinder, etc. I just used your vid to do my valve clearances... There was no gap at all... Probable the new cylinder and gasket but I still don't have the best grasp of the valves. Engine is a bit noisy so I think I'll try replacing the cam chain as it seems to be rattling even when the main bottom tensioner is fully tensioned. I should have replaced it when I had it apart... But it looked ok so just did the tensioner and roller. Oh well I can only get better. The thread on my adjuster bolt seems stripped. Can't tighten it or the locking nut do will prob take it to someone to get it helicoiled. Any way thanks for all your help FreeRider! I'll refer to this video (again!) when I get a new can chain :)

@@felixossig-bonanno8056 I try not to use a rattle gun but sometimes it's a quick solution. That's a good idea you had to check the torque, I'll do that in future!

@felixossig-bonanno8056 doing a helicoil is easy, I have a video showing helicoiling the footrest mountings. You must have been very happy when it started first kick! The tensioner side bolt is very easy to strip the soft alloy, have to use a light touch. It's rewarding fixing the bike yourself isn't it!

I tried replacing my chain and it didn’t go that easy. My cam kept getting like it was tight as heck to even sat in there. It was so stiff the chain.

Did you slacken off the chain adjuster & was the head fully torqued down? That's usually the main reasons why it's hard to refit the cam with a new chain.
