As a kid, I begged my parents to get me one of these or one of the other Honda mini bikes of that time. I never got one, but because my brother raced flat track, I guess they had enough of me pestering and surprised me with a Yamaha YZ80. I raced for a few years. Now I’m 61, and I still dream about how cool these were.

Thanks for your video on this. Back in the late 1980's, I picked up a red K0. Shortly thereafter, I went to work for Honda R&D NA. At that time Honda still had parts for all their old bikes, so I ordered new parts (employee discount) and fixed her up. I sold it in the middle 90's for a kid to ride. I hope they didn't trash it.

Using the build date, my brother had a 1974 CT70H. It had a 4 speed with a clutch. We also had a 1973 QA50 & a 1969 Z50. Our whole family had a blast riding them on the hilly forest trails. What a blast growing up in the '70's compared to nowadays!

Honda didn’t use model years until 1976. If your bike was a 4 speed, it was a K0 or K1. Honda discontinued the 4 speed at the end of the K1 production run.

Thanks Mike this was very informative. I just finished restoring my mothers original 71KO #223434 with 4252miles over the Christmas Holiday unfortunately the tag is worn only in the exact spot where the build date is and I do not know the exact month. Original Candy Gold with original paint chrome and tires. We believe that last time it ran was 20-25 years ago a valve cover stud broke and had a severe oil leak and was put to the side where know one bothered to fix it, until I dug it out last month. It was stored most of its life indoors and plan to keep it that way. No rust or dents to speak of just some scratch's and minor pitting of chrome in a couple areas. All parts I replaced were original red Honda packaged, with exception of the seat. Mice did a number on that and I had to order a remake KO. Was a pretty extensive replacement of worn parts, but fun project. Bike looks almost new but yet has that 50 year used look and runs like a champ. Since my mother still has a title I plan to get it licensed once again. Not sure why but the title we have calls it out to be a 72, but she did get it Brand new as a Christmas Gift at the end of 71so we think my grandpa titled/plated it in January 72.
@MiniBikeMike
@MiniBikeMike 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome that you brought it back to life. Very cool story. It doesn’t surprise me that it’s titled as a 72. Since Honda didn’t declare a model year to them, it was up to the dealer to determine what to put on the title.....and each dealer had a different method. I have a spreadsheet of build dates and vin’s at my shop. I’ll try to remember to look at it tomorrow and give you an estimate of build date. Thanks for watching the videos.

I remember having a 2 Honda 70s in Gold. But I'm sure they were pre 1969. At least a couple of years earlier. And they didn't have the chrome skid plate. The engine was completely exposed. If you take of that whole skid with the two drop bars in front, you got it. I don't recall a speedo either. But it was a 3 speed semi. Thoughts?

I’m not sure that I’m following on what part you’re speaking about. The silver tag chrome engine guard has square mounting tabs for the spark plug guard, instead of rounded tabs on the later bikes. Is that what you’re talking about? The engine guard itself was not an “add on”, they are stock on every CT70 from the first K0’s thru the 1978 models. If you’re referring to the Dax model bikes, they did not come with the engine guard.

The frame and engine both have 6 digits. The engine number can be higher or lower than the frame number, but they should be with 300 of each other. For example, if the frame number is 126400, the engine number should be between 126100 and 126700.

I fell in love with my CT70 when I was 7 years old and have now collected them for nearly 30 years. Unfortunately, in the past 10 years, the hobby is now overrun by those that really could care less about the bikes....they’re just driven by profits and the money these now seek. Hopefully, in another 10 years, the hoopla will die down and we can get back to just those of us who actually ride and enjoy the bikes.

..... While in the Army in Germany, back in Jan '72 to Dec '74... A bunch of us bought CT 50's that looked pretty much like the CT 70's shown here, except that they were 49cc which were exempt from the need for a German drivers license... They were definitely the first models made, as I think I bought mine new in '73 ...It had the one piece headlight / speedometer bucket as shown in these units... Mine was the candy gold ... One thing that was really different though from the US units and the European units was the fenders... Instead of the 'short length' chrome fenders, those in Europe (at least Germany) were much longer in length, were painted grey, and were shaped similar (in my mind) to German WW2 Helmets !! ... From the Army base, I drove down to the train station, and for an extra 5 dm (German Marks) I could then put my trail bike in the car that held luggage and related items... After arriving in Munich, Frankfurt or any number of Bavarian cities or towns, I would hand my ticket stub to some well fed German train worker, who would roll my Honda to me... Then I would bike through those towns and eat at castles or many other spots, while enjoying the day on my Honda... Fine memories ingrained in the 'old grey matter'... The Army shipped my Honda home to Michigan and I then took it out to California... Biggest mistake was selling it some years later to a guy who had a place in Big Bear Lake... Grumble, wish I had the Honda CT50 today, as even at 70 years of age, I know it would be a blast to buzz around on... Oh, yeah, it was a three speed, and had Km on the speedometer instead of MPH.....

Thanks for sharing! I recently sold a Candy Red version of the same bike you described. Do you remember if your bike had a weird shifting pattern? On the bike I had, you shifted down once for low gear. If you shifted back up once, you were back in neutral, then shift up again for 2nd and then 3rd gear. The low gear was kind of a “granny gear”.

@@MiniBikeMike ...Wow, I hadn't thought about that until you mentioned the shift pattern...Yes, mine shifted as you described...One down, then up for neutral, second and third... I guess it depends on the condition of the original paint. If there’s no deep chips or deep rust, I just take a heat gun to the decals, hit it with a power washer, maybe light sand to scuff it up, grey primer, then paint. If the paint is a little rougher, I spend a little more time sanding and smoothing. I don’t restore bikes, I rebuild them. I’m OK with a 10’er paint job.

Honda produced the 4 speed H’s for two models, the K0 and the K1. During that span, they produced around 95,000 CT70H’s.

Thanks Mike for your video pretty interesting you know in the sixties I lived in New York City in a apartment complex huge garden apartments you know can't tell you how how much area we took it was like a little town and they were garages in the back of all the apartments most people use the for storage but there was a a kid who was a couple years older than me and he had a garage for the downies to see him riding like it look like a moped 56 remember with 50cc and he had the trail bike the 15 probably and I'm on my eyes used to what I was so jealous his father on the Honda dealership he had all these cool things and I got a gold card in 72 and then I bought a rough roadster frame everything was there all you had to do is put an engine on it and I transplanted the engine from my go-kart to the mini bike with how to do some alterations and stuff to get everything to line up and work but I did and I had that for a while for stolen but I'm getting back to that Honda mini trail 70 and 75 I think I moved to Rhode Island with my family I was born in 59 so 6:16 and a friend of mine from my school had one and he used to let me ride it and stuff like that and it was street legal I mean that would never be street legal in New York City you couldn't get that but it was registered as a street bike and I took my road test on it my motorcycle Honda shows great skill at motorcycle Friday after I got my first bike and it was a 1966 Yamaha ym1 with auto loop two-stroke with the you know you didn't have to mix the gas and the oil it did it for you I put the oil in one tank and the gas and the other it was basically a clone of a Honda 305 dream cuz it was a 305cc 2 stroke wishbone frame9pp0l my speech to text is screwing up I'm blind now I haven't been able to ride in decades and it's painful I can't tell you how much I miss it was a big part of my life but yeah so I had that big 305 two-stroke my first wheel bike and went all over Rhode Island with it even took it to Connecticut once that was quite there yeah it was reliable basically as long as you can crash it LOL anyway my second bike up there was a 75 Suzuki gt550 another two stroke triple two stroke also Auto lube you know you didn't have to mix the gas in oil again but yeah that was a triple two stroke and a three into four exhaust that bike I went everywhere on from main down to all the way down the coast 95 crazy trips on that thing from Loudon New Hampshire to anyway I'm all over the place with this just cool memories of getting my motorcycle license with a mini trail 70 in 1976 I guess sincerely Bob the blind bedroom guitars

What model CT70 do you have? The 3 speed versions have a left brake lever for the rear brake from the K0’s thru mid run K3’s. The later K3’s thru 1978’s do not have a rear brake lever. The 4 speed models use the left lever for the clutch.

@MiniBikeMike
@MiniBikeMike 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re talking about the little bracket that bolt at the top of the engine cradle, yes. On the early bikes, silver tag and a little later, they were silver. On the later bikes they were black. The blue bike wasn’t built to be correct, it has tons of aftermarket parts and incorrect color items, like that bracket and all the cables. I probably painted it silver because I had the silver paint out and just included it with some other items getting that color.
