I would like to tell everyone that I watched this video three years ago. I have now r&r'ed the engines out of 4 Gl1200's. This video is the best way to do it right !!! The first time it took me 5 hours to get it out. Now 2 and 1/2 hours. THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO.................. Thanks PS. I still review this video before starting each one. Removing one out of a 1985 GL1200 trike, today.

I’ve had to do a couple stators on mine. Last weekend realized the stator is bad again. Any suggestions on why they keep burning up?

@@12yearssober Pulling to many amps or to many lights. May be just the voltage regulater putting out to many volts.

Steve, Just wanted to thank you for posting so an exceptionally good video demonstration. I have an 86 and without your video would have been forced to sell for parts as the bike is not worth the cost of repair at the dealership. Your video is very specific, to the point, and covers just about everything. Thanks for taking the time you put into this. I have the engine out and will be watching the stator video next. Keep up the great work here and on your forum.

Did this after this video last month alone no assistent. Absolutely doable for a bit experienced home mechanic. Only "diffcult" part was getting the engine in place, but I did it alone with a dolly and two jacks, not very hard alone but not a walk in the park. Replaced the stator and have 14.5 volts charging now. I much prefer this two day job to the "poor boy" conversion. NB. order exhaust studs beforehand, it is a pleasure to install shiny new bolts instead og the rusty old ones even if they dont break. (I would not hesitate to pull the engine again if I had to). Remember to do all operations in the correct order, and dont forget steps as it Will be a nightmare to dismantle again for a forgotten rubber boot or a electrical cable router wrongly !

I'd like to thank you. I'm just about to begin this process and you're videos will lead the way lol I will post again with an update in a few days.
@stevesaundersireland13 жыл бұрын
It's about a full days work, and that's if you don't come across problems. Snapped exhaust header studs & muffler clamp bolts are common, and that causes delays. I usually split the work over a couple of days, usually about two and a half or three hours to get the engine out, an hour to remove the dead stator and fit the new one. Putting the engine back in takes me three to four hours.

I’ll be taking the engine out of my recently acquired ‘82 GL1100 to fix the starter clutch. This video pretty much shows everything I need to be on the lookout for. Now if I could only find a retired mechanic in my neighbourhood Who’s interested in getting his hands dirty to help with this mega project.

In response to BIKERMETOO the reason for demonstrating engine removal is obvious. At some point, someone out there will need to tackle this job, and this video is really informative to anyone contemplating doing such an engine removal.

I have a thought , what if on these gl 1200 the stator fail that we could add a RAT - ram air turbine that would charge the battery ?-like we have in aircraft - on my old gold wing back in the 80s the stator would often fail . Now if we could put in a RAT in a good location on the gl1200 then stator problem solved - no belts , not much to mod , you could use an alternator connected to field from dc q1 volt system , have it turning by air - now the only down side I can see is if you are stuck in traffic but if you have a hot battery that may not be an issue.

I just found out on the internet that the anti freeze on these Honda's required the special Honda Anti Freeze. There is something in regular anti freeze that can damage some gaskets and rubber items on them. I just wanted to share this for anyone else like myself that is new to working on them. And so it reminded me to be sure and check outfor things like this as I am only familiar with auto mechanics etc.
@donmiles29105 жыл бұрын
The Honda version has no silicates (from what I understand). The silicates (in regular automotive antifreeze) act like little scouring pads keeping everything "clean", but are actually too abrasive, and actually cause wear. Look for any brand WITHOUT the silica additives.

I have no idea why I only have 60 psi compression in my #4 cylinder of my 84 Gl 1200.. I took the head off and the cylinder looks perfect. Changed the valves. But the psi is still 60. Doesn't use oil. But barely runs and gets awful mpg. Other cylinders are between 125 and 150 psi. My theory I have a shop manual that describes how to remove the engine and take it apart. But so far I am reluctant to try it. I would like to watch a video or see a blog from someone who has tried to do it,

I dropped my engine for a shorted stator. When I opened the stator cover I discovered the flywheel had come loose and had grinded itself into the stator. reason was stripped threads on the flywheel nut... has anyone heard of this before ?
@lizboylee7 жыл бұрын
Yes... just got the cover back on, and the engine ready to begin the re-installation process. I was considering ignoring it and doing the PoorBoy conversion, but I decided to go ahead and replace my stator. Saved the engine. My theory is as the nut came lose, right at the last bit, the flywheel knocked it off as it flopped lose, striping that last little bit.
