Hey Chris, I'm curious if you think that heavy Kuryakn rack had anything to do with loosening up your trunk lid holders. When I received that trunk rack in the mail I was apprehensive about installing it because it was so heavy. I still have it a year later in the box. I also just purchased the low profile contour trunk rack from Show Chrome. But even with it's light weight i'm afraid to install that too. But i'm really interested in your opinion on the weight of trunk racks, even all by themselves, and with nothing on them, and how you feel about the effect of their weight on the trunk lid itself..

To answer to your question my response is No. The Kuryakyn trunk rack is not heavy at all, the problem is Honda cheap plastic that they use, what good is a plastic trunk that can’t hold a unloaded rack. Kuryakyn made a quality rack, regardless of any rack you use Honda says not to put more than 5 pounds on the trunk lid, that’s comes up to the weight of your socks and underwear in a plastic bag. Let’s face it Honda should have made a more sturdier trunk, but cheap plastic don’t hold up. If you are afraid of putting even a light trunk rack on your trunk than obviously you know that the trunk is the problem not the rack.

@@chriscaliente5033Chris, I have a 2001 and just took a trip where I needed to have a bag on the rack. the bag itself probably weighs 5lbs. I noticed when we opened the lid and tried to close it with the pack on the rack it flexed so much the latches were misaligned and it didn't want to latch. Here is the question, do you know of anything that could, even on the inside, be fastened maybe to the truck rack supports to stiffen the trunk lid? Or maybe there is another solution?? Thanks for all your content and your time. Joel From Minnesota

I bought a wing last year, and the plastic "bosses" were broken, and lid was loose. he took a grand off of the price, so I wasn't upset, and figured I could find a way to fix them. After a year of trying different things, and failing( I have the "U" shaped locks inserted to keep sensor off, and bungees holding it closed), I found this AWESOME fix! THANK YOU! Now, I'm waiting for the part to arrive 11/19 from eBay...

Thanks for this video Chris! I just got done installing Kuryakyn 3215 Lid Handle. The four screws must have been revised because mine was the correct length. I totally agree that those bosses are way too wimpy for the holding power they are supposed to achieve. I did not have enough finger strength to disconnect the wire harness from the "control unit lock and open" box. I had to remove the two screws that hold the control box to the panel and then use a flat blade screwdriver to push down on the wire harness connector tab and twist the screwdriver blade to remove the connector from the receiver. Besides having a break light and increasing the holding power of the tapped holes for the lock latches, it makes a really nice handle for lifting the trunk lid.

Hi again Chris: for all my thoughts/efforts to the contrary, the 3215, in the end, offers the most solid anchor for the latches, the tip of my fedora to you sir. ordered last night. My addition after drilling the Mount holes will be to grind the mounts off and substitute a pair of custom nylon blocks to prevent the bosses from crushing and starting this whole saga over again.

Thanks Chris . I fought loose life screws a entire ridding season until the trunk hard liner broke and had to be replaced. I finally had to put larger screws all around the liner. I will get one of those handles.

Thank you! My right side latch just broke this weekend. I ordered a set of bolts, but I guess that won't help. Time to buy more "safety chrome". 🙂

I like that handle, I haven't had an issue with my trunk latch hooks. I did install buggy bumpers so the lid isn't bouncing around and wearing off the side edge paint. I will have to look into the handle, I like the way it installs, plus the light is a bonus!

Hi again Chris, I enjoy your videos. I replied 4 months ago with some concerns about this application. Full disclosure, I purchase my 2001 with far more than these four plastic mount points failing what a hopelessly underbuilt design! My trunk lid must have caught a gust of wind from the back as the front trunk panel has some terminal cracks lid had a corner crack, the stow box under the hinge was cracked- allowing the lid to flex all over, further aggravating the misalignment and "door agar" dash indicator light. That said here's my comment: With the forward panel replaced the question of these U-shaped rods remains. Do they stay well-aligned two years later? With the female threaded mounting bosses broken is it realistic to expect the U rods will align correctly with the switch? Won't crushing all that plastic further collapse those mountings furthering the misalignments more and more as you tighten and tighten? Seems kludgey at best after all my time and expense. The Kuryakyn handle is so heavy. I believe installing that would make things worse..especially in the next wind gust! I plan to sculpt four mount bosses from solid ABS and affix them with Epoxy. Too close to the paint finish for plastic welds. I would be curious to learn what the view is from the back with both the wing and handle illuminated. I found an item via wingstuff.com called "rubber baby buggy bumpers" of all things....rubber grommets that bear the load of the lid and the hammering by an ignorant rider. Another is a custom internal bracket from an Ebayer in Russia who ties together the hinge mount points with the trunk anchors yielding very rigid support for the hinges I hope. Congratulations on all your views! Contact me if I can offer info vids or support from SW WI USA

Cruiseman's Garage my trunk latch was hanging by one screw, the screws fell out to the trunk floor, there was no threads to tighten the screws in, I had to think fast or go Honda for warranty service.

Recently purchased 2001 1800. Dash lights stay on etc. A more pressing problem for me is that the forward abs panel that anchors the lid hinges is cracking on both sides allowing the lid to twist and misalign. Has anything been developed to strengthen this weak Link.?

Mine did the same (twice) Made some steel sheet covers for the lugs, and fixed with epoxy, but they still snapped eventually.

Chris, What year is your bike? Mine is a '12 and I have this very same problem. I'm seeing on some websites the 3215 will fit through a '17, and others where it only fits through a '09. Hopefully this will work and I'll be able to find one. Thanks so much for posting this video!

Chris you think using a brushless drill to remove and install the metal screws into plastic isn't the problem is it you can strip the plastic out with just a the screw driver if you ain't careful.

Wingrider products makes a trunk support system with adjustable rubber feet similar to the type under the hood of ur car. Much better than more kuryakin chrome junk. I had one on my last wing and just orderd another for a second used wing I just bought. He is shutting down at the end of July 2020. This works and is unobtrusive.
