Here I will demonstrate how I went about setting the timing between the crank, cam and balance shafts. Any part of this procedure that is done incorrectly can ruin your engine! I promise that if you follow my method, you will have nothing to fear.
There are many ways to "skin the cat" and these are the methods that I use. Any criticisms or alternate methods posted in the comments are welcome, just keep it civil.

This guy is amazing everything is the same on f22a1 and I have been completely unable to find a full tutorial on how to time it I bought it out of time and have been stuck for sooooo long trying to build the confidence to attack it. All the other videos leave a little to the imagination. But you going into such specific detail made it possible. THANK YOU!!!

@@ktecgarage I'm right in the middle of this and someone said to put something in the back until it's in as far as it goes. Then take off the balancer and line up the marks. The bolt it back on. I don't understand how that would work. That's not right is it? I can't get them all to line up at the same time

Watch that video. If you put a screwdriver in that port, it will lock up that rear shaft at the top dead center position. This video makes it much easier to see what you are trying to do.

Just a tip, the cam gear has the lines on the rear of it too, and they should line up with the top deck of the head.

Thanks for an excellent video. I wasn't sure about the rear balance shaft. This video answered my question. Thanks for spending the extra time to explain the 3:1 ratio, etc. I've always owned American made vehicles, and none of them used balance shafts; so this was my first experience with them. Hey Ktec Great Video! Been watching some of ur videos bc I'm doing a Water Pump and Timing Belt job on a 99 Accord EX 2.3L VTec and I love your work!! My Accord was leaking Antifreeze coolant pretty bad from the Water Pump, so I got a Timing Belt and Water Pump and started turning wrenches! Once I got the Timing Cover off I noticed there was a chewed up, old looking belt that was mangled up in there! It wasn't the Timing Belt and the Accord WAS DEFINITELY WORKING B4 I started working on it, I moved it in2 position and turned it off with the key! Looked it up and found out it's the Balance Shaft Belt! It was sooo chewed up and looks like it's been in there forever, surprised it didn't jump timing! Long story short I don't know how to line up the Balance Shaft now!!! I'm seeing a LOT of conflicting information on how to line up the marks and what's what! Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

I have another video setting the timing on this with the engine out in the rebuild playlist. If you have a screwdriver locking up that back shaft and set the mark on the gear for the front one at 9 o'clock, your good to go. All assuming you have the crank gear at top dead center. TBH, if you just want to leave that belt off, you won't even notice since you've been driving so long without it. They even make delete kits for them. But, if you get one put on you'll notice it will be smoother than you are use to. Thanks for the kudos!

@@ktecgarage Thank You so Much!!! I rewatched that video and you showed the 3x Turn trick and I just did it that way!!! It all looks perfectly lined up! Thank you again, I didn't even know about the 3:1 Gear Ratio on the rear balance gear, so even if I had the marks right it may not have even mattered!!! I didn't use the service port hole behind the motor to lock it but I was extra careful to have it just right, 3rd turn where it doesnt fall!

Thanks for that inf I'm been looking all u videos u save me a lot of issues with my car and also that spring that u put last on my car I see it's missing I think that's WY my car always have a noise that's sounds like it power steering bad ( my car has that front cover loose u think I can swap that spring without removing anything on the timing belt because the car runs fine I just don't want too pay for that again if I can do it by myself?

Once the timing parts are tightened down, I don't believe the springs serve any purpose. If it's running fine, don't bother.

Thanks for posting! I'm doing a timing belt on a F23A5. Question: how do you put the crank bolt on and off without moving the crankshaft off TDC? The special Honda tool doesn't work at this stage of the process. Thanks.
@ktecgarage
@ktecgarage 2 жыл бұрын
Moving the crank won't damage anything so long as the timing belt is still on and in proper time. Once you get it loose, you can run it back in "loosely" to move the crank later. Hope I understood your question correctly. Good luck with your repair and thank you for the comment.

Thanks, it was 9 years since I did this to my 1995 and I forgot much of what I learned last time. Should I wait for my new motor mount to set my cam wheel? The engine is setting lower. I guess I could jack it up to where it's supposed to be. Do you turn the crank clockwise or counter clockwise on a 2.2 liter 1995 non vtech engine (1995 accord LX)? Someone told me rotates clockwise but everything I can find says it's like yours counter clockwise.

Could you not remove the timing belt cover and still line up the cam sprocket to TDC by shining a light behind the cam sprocket and lining the side marks on the wheel with the top of cam head??? Please advise , thank you.

Could be. On 1st starts, I pull the fuel pump fuse and spark plugs and spin the engine with the starter for 30 to 45 seconds to circulate oil. Could also need to adjust the valve lash. Ps belt is adjusted by loosening the pump slightly, pry it up with crowbar or long screwdriver and then re-tighten the bolts with the tension still applied.

alright so it seems like I'm overthinking the tension. Hand tight last bigger tensioner bolt, and its buddy bolt, then remove the retainer bolt on the other tensioner. Rotate like 3 teeth to find the proper tension, with everything finger tight, then tighten down once the slack is gone and then boom. all set?

At 5:35 of your video, I believe you need to adjust that via the balancer before taking the belt out. On the plastic cover that you took out, there an indicator/gauge built into the plastic cover that will help you to align this particular part of the timing. See kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJmWfGevnq6Wd7s.
