Honda HR-V (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

2016 Honda HR-V takes its name from Honda's 1990s HR-V. It is also a B-segment crossover, but that is where similarities end. The new HR-V shares its platform with the current Honda Jazz, albeit extended to account for longer wheelbase. Just like Jazz, also HR-V is very roomy inside for the segment it is in. When it comes to size HR-V is close to compact crossovers Mitsubishi ASX and Nissan Qashqai.

"It's a car, ok?" Exactly my feeling too. Nothing stands out. You're also right about the interior in the driver's seat: it's overwhelming. So many different knobs and switches in so many different styles. My head was spinning when I sat down at first. I walked into the showroom the buy the Civic, saw the HR-V and I was extremely close to change my mind, but the 1.5 petrol is a bit small for that body and I don't like diesels so i stuck with the 1.8 Civic :). But the HR-V looks good in my opinion and it's a good all-rounder for the money, giving the fact that you can save some serious money if you know how to negotiate at the dealership. Like your reviews man, keep it up.

Excellent review Marek! I'm quite a fan of Honda cars and I think you did this one justice. Pointing out very precisely the negatives and praising the upsides. I know it's not top notch, but its a car with a very fair value for money. Excellent praticality, top notch reliability, very good assembly. For me the downside is the looks, its a tad bland and sensible. But if you look beyond that I think its in my top five value for money cars. That's my kind of biased opinion. As for the competition the one I put above the HR-V in terms of overall looks, design and a great looking interior, almost posh ish like, is the Hyunday Tucson. I've been reading a lot of praise for it. But the engine is a little old and not as frugal as the fantastic i-DTEC from Honda. I just purchased a Honda HR-V and I love it! I am in my sixty's petite and short 😁. I had the old CR-V they stole the catalitic converter I was forced to purchase a newer car since the insurance company total out my old CR-V, I purchased the HR-V. I knew nothing about the HR-V until I got to the Subaru dealer and test drove the HR-V, I fell in love. Perfect size for me, I don't do a lot of driving.

We have the 1.8l in the US and I feel it has plenty of power with the CVT. Many others say it's pathetically underpowered, but I always wounder, compaired to what a Hemmi?

I have had three Hondas in the past few years, and not one of them has gone wrong. I have a Jazz at the moment, and you're right about the ride - a bit too hard, doesn't match the rest of the characteristics of the car.

Hello Marek. When it will be available in Poland, could you try the new HR-V 1.5 Turbo and tell us some key differences between the models? The local Honda dealer said that the 2018 face lifted HR-V, which still has the 1.5 NA engine, has had its CVT a bit finely tuned so it ain't gonna yell at you when you floor it that much. Also check up the ride comfort , as the new, turbo one, is said to have sportier suspension, but then in the pre-purchase offer they say it has some "advanced damper systems" which improves ride comfort.

Nice camera shot of the car driving over the camera. In the US, the HRV comes with a 1.8 liter engine, I think. Maybe 2.0. The 1.5 liter you are driving here is I think the same engine as in my Fit-Jazz. Yep, it revs up real nice.

+harrigorri1 I have almost no experience with Subaru (I just drove a couple of my friends' cars). Subaru in Poland is located too far for me to go, and pick up a test car (half a day to get there, half a day to return, so I don't bother).

Good review. I like the car, but the rear part design seems a bit old with that triangle shape. I don't know in other countries, but in Spain the delivery time is about 7 months! I'd buy this car for its practicallity, but I can't see more reasons although its segment is not very exciting either. The CX-3 maybe...

Angel, cx-3 is only good if you are 1,50m tall maximun and you use you car with noone else. It's way too small inside

how do you like the seats ? I've read a lot of complaints about magic seats being very uncomfortable, lacking in thigh and especially lumbar support for longer than very short drives, I can't seem to find any info about if this has improved or not on newer Honda models ?

+Edgars K I think it's a case of bad vs. worse. Some cars have more glass around the sides/back and that makes them easier to maneuver. This one is particularly bad, which is why I mentioned it. This is the car your wife could drive kids to school in.

I don't remember seeing those in the flesh (especially LHD). I know the Civic Shuttle existed, but wasn't only a RHD JDM imported to the UK? That would make it a niche product compared to the HR-V. Though I suspect Honda may have taken inspiration from the Shuttle, when designing the HR-V.

Problem with hrv is that its a lot more expensive than other crossovers based on superminis. Its right on par with crossovers based on compacts in terms of price. In my country it has the same price as Nissan Qashqai. Hrv just doesn't justify such price.

+Zadrigo It's as big as the Qashqai, and you can probably get top spec HR-V for mid-spec Qashqai money. But I agree, it is on the pricey side.

+Marek Drives Nope, its even worse here. Qashqai is actually cheaper in comparable trim throughout the range by 1000-3000 euros which is insane. The only case where they are evenly priced is top of the range trim. In mid-range trim Qahqai is cheaper by 1500-2500 euros (depending on whether you go for petrol or diesel which is insanely expensive on Hondas) and that is with 360 cameras included, compared to hrv with no cameras, just parking sensors. I just dont understand pricing of Honda.

For example, Civic is 2000 euros more expensive than Golf in basic petrol version (16k vs 14k €) and 4000 euros more expensive in diesel version 20k vs 16k € for 1.6 diesels). And no, there is no more standard equpment on Hondas. The only redeeming factor is that top versions are usually cheaper than top versions of other manufacturers' cars but noone buys those anyway. Yep, they are crazy. Only Mitsubishi sells fewer cars here :)

I had a Fiat 500 Sport, not the X model, just a regular 500 sport. I planned on trading it for the 500 X with AWD, until I compared cost and features with the HRV. The HRV got MUCH better fuel consumption, had much more inside room, cost around 7 grand less than the X, and resale is much better on a Honda. I bought a 2018 HRV LX model with the cvt. So far I am 100% satisfied with my HRV, not one complaint. I am getting 31.5 mpg mixed driving, and the cvt feels just like any other automatic tranny that I've driven. Now just waiting for snow to test out the awd, however reviews say that the HRV awd goes great in snow. Even though I enjoyed owning/driving my Fiat, I am glad that I opted for the Honda hrv for many reasons. Just thought I would share my opinion with you on this comparison. Oh, and while not a race car, my HRV has plenty of power and speed for me. Take care my friend.
