I have one, I thought the rear handles were cool until I tried to open the rear door with a shopping bag in each arm. Or if you are carrying a box. Anytime both hands are occupied, the handle is too high to reach. Kitsch over practicality.

Thank you for your insightful review. I just bought a 2016 HRV, literally on the day this video came out! So glad you gave the HRV a good review! I too appreciate its practical space inside for the compact size, the excellent trim level, Honda reliability and the fetching look. Here in New Zealand, however, the 2016 models had a different nomenclature, with the HRV S being the base model, the HRV L being the mid level and the HRV Sport (and up to Sport NT with all additional extras such as side step platform) being the top spec in NZ. All these correspond to the equivalent to Australia in terms of trim. I was able to get a HRV Sport for $20k which I thought was a great deal. As you have noted some of the black gloss around the gear stick and climate controls are often scratched up but I found some car wax can restore it. Fuel efficiency is good and apparently improves after the car has done a few 10,000kms. I picked up my secondhand HRV from a car yard out of town and took the opportunity to take my car on a 2 day round trip. It was excellent. Easy to drive and smooth with plenty of space for the family. I personally think the front seat is very comfortable, much more comfortable than in my previous car. My HRV also comes with electric seat adjustment for the driver (not for the front passenger though) which meant I could adjust the seat how I want for max comfort on the long journey. I also tried out the other seats during the journey when my partner drove and they were also all comfortable front and back with plenty of space to doze off. One of the things I noticed though is that as the fuel tank is under the front seats (to allow for the magi seats), there is no storage under the front seats and there is a pronounce 'lip' or 'wall' under the front seats if your seat is pulled back which may impact where you want to rest your left leg.

My 2010 Prius blew the head gasket at 300k miles. I wanted a new Prius but the pricing was insane at this time. I saw this video and went looking for a gentle used hrv. My local Honda dealer had new models with 2.49% financing. Got exl trim with front wheel drive for msrp. My first two tanks of gas have returned a combine 34.2 mpg with a nearly 50/50 split on city/highway. My cost of ownership will be nearly identical for my new hrv compared to the inflated Prius prices. Compared to the ride and power of a Prius this is a luxury sports car.

I just picked up my new 2022 (US) HR-V LX trim 2 wheel drive and I love it. Its very nimble and light and very Quick, its not a speed demon but gets up to speed nicely. Has paddle shift mode if you are feeling sporty. I has a 1.8l with a 1st gear take off CVT,, I don't like CVT's but this one has a real first gear, after that it transitions to a CVT and the car has no problems accelerating . The new technology is awesome, apple and android play are so nice to have! Good luck with your! :-)

We have a 2016 HR-V with 85,000 km. Ours is the 1800 CVT and while not particularly powerful is adequate for normal driving. The all wheel drive works very well here in Canada when going through snow. I have Michelin X-ice snow tires and the car is fantastic in snow and icy conditions, plus it all happens without the need to turn anything on or off. I agree with the front seats comment, not comfortable for long distance driving. Lack of thigh support (I'm 6' - 2" ) Room for hauling and trick rear seats are fantastic. Reliability is fantastic. No issues yet, I have the regular maintenance done at the dealers shop!

With some of the biggest irritation being the touch controls, maybe the base LX is most appealing, with its additional hard controls for radio and climate. You trade-off other things of course, but it may be worth it. After all, you use audio and climate controls a lot more often than most other things.

Great review, thank you. I bought a new HRV VTi (Australian base model) in 2015. No mechanical issues at all since then. Now done about 54 thousand km. It is serviced regularly. Very economical but I read somewhere that the engine Honda used in this car is/was not one of Honda’s latest engines. Driver side window motor has recently started making a clicking noise for a few seconds when the glass reaches the top of the window frame. Left side front door always needed a slightly more forceful nudge to close when all the windows are up - Honda mechanic told me it was something to do with the pressure in the cabin when windows are up. The original battery lasted 6 years. A few gripes. This model did not have built-in Sat Nav. Blue paint sometimes takes on a purple hue depending on the light. Orange oil stick is a silly Honda choice as it is harder to see the oil level. No power socket in the boot, a bit odd for a SUV type vehicle- the two higher grade models for the same 2015 car have the extra socket and they all have the same body. Speedo always reads 4 to 6 kph higher (at 60 kph) than my plug-in sat nav or the dash cam. It is very reliable and practical car.

I bought a 2016 in may of 2015 in the United States I am happy with it This car tackles snow like a champ and it handles well There is a minor problem with outside trim distorting and peeling My headlights have fogged over but that’s hardly unique to the Honda HRV. Touch screens are not great but ok. Built in navigation is mostly ok but no speed limit indicator which is a big minus for me. Not a problem since I use Waze these days and updates to the nav are not free. Front seats are comfortable enough despite what I’ve read from reviews. Plenty of power for Highway and city driving without being a muscle car

We owned a 2016 HRV EX AWD. It wasn't a 'bad' car and most people would probably be happy with it. For us, it just felt extremely underpowered and spartan. I have back issues and often would have lower back spasms getting up from the front seat after long rides.

Thank you for another superb video. I've driven a few of these and one pet peeve I have with them is that all clocks in the car (I think there are potentially three) require different settings to set them. Messes with your head when their hours are different from each other from the centre display to the right gauge 😁

I've had mine for a year and a half and I really like it, a euro-spec 2017 petrol manual highest trim-level model. I'm in Europe, so the spec sheet is a bit different though. Over here we could pick between a 1.6 diesel manual, or a 1.5 naturally aspirated petrol available in both manual and CVT. I'm a bit weirded out at those reports saying that the seats are uncomfortable though. Now I've not driven a huge amount of cars and comfort is also pretty subjective, but I can definitely say that I'm very comfortable in the HR-V seat, maybe more than any other car I've driven. I'm a million times better seated in the HR-V than I am in my other current car (2018 Opel Corsa), that's for damn sure. I also really like how both my elbows tend to rest naturally dead on the armrests on both sides, it really adds up to the comfort in the seat, especially on longer trips (elbow room is very generous, I might add). At the end of the day, comfort is so subjective that it's best to just try out the damn seats for yourself rather than thrusting reports claiming that comfort is bad or some idiot on the internet saying that it's great. We're all built different, and we all have varying levels expectations, sensitivity and pickiness.

the real bastard of the bunch is 7 speed DCT, Hybrid variant. The clutch-set is know to go out of calibration and wear out prematurely (because dot-4 fluid in hydraulic system of clutch engage/disengage will accumulate moisture). it is very important to check the cap of hydraulic fluid reservoir for any milky deposits and it is better to change fluid every 10k kms. after you change the fluid do remember to ask your mechanic to hook up a scanner and look for "Clutch zero-point learning error". In case of error recalibrate the clutch or it will eat itself up and will cost you US$2000 in replacement.

Great report. I see that the owner has turned the driver headrest around, bc it will give u more space to keep your head up more strait and not be a "pain in the neck". I do the same since years. One problem u missed is, it has no 360 cam and no BSM=Blind spot monitor. The "Lane watch" is a lame solution, old and cheap if it's without BSM like in the HRV. Other then that, i love my 2020 HRV RS top model. Needs overall 5,9l/100km in 23600km. No problems with her only normal Honda services.I changed the Infotainment screen for a bigger aftermarket wireless 9" octa core Android Auto unit. Changed the wheels to Volk Racing TE37 18" front and 19" back. Lighter then the originals I'm so happy. Btw, i'm in Thailand and your HRV down under is also made here. Thank U and take care

The HR-V has taken the crown off the KIA Carnival for best fuel consumption of the cars you guys have reviewed which is something I didn't think would happen until you were closer to the 500k subscriber mark. Beeing an old retired male, of course I ride a Honda H-RV. And yes, it has a CVT transmission. Firstly, because manual gearboxes are from way far in the past i.m.h.o. and secondly, the inventor of the Variomatis, the first CVT transmissions with rubber belts, lived and worked very close to where I live. He invented the steel assembled push belt which is presently used in modern CVT transmissions. My H-RV is a 1.5 liter Turbo Sport and it has 134 kW or 182 hp. If I want I can shift up and down with peddles, but that I only use using the engine brake shifting down or descending a hill. As said before, why shift by hand if the CVT can do it better then the driver and much faster too. This H-RV has everything in the option list except for a glass roof and a tow bar. The car can pull 1400 kgs braked trailers or caravans. After having owned and driven a few BMW's with V8 engines, I can say that driving this H-RV is very pleasant, especially as there are not many around.

Very helpful review. This is one of the small SUVs I’m considering to replace my beloved 2016 Polo, which unfortunately has to go because my bank account can’t keep up with the cost of repairs. 😢 I never would have considered Honda (or even an SUV), but my friend has one of these and says it has been super reliable. My mechanic has warned me that parts and labour can be expensive for Hondas though, is this generally the case in Australia? It couldn’t be as expensive as VW parts at the very least. The other small SUVs I’m considering are the Vitara, CH-R (probably out of my price range though unfortunately), and the Yaris Cross (but I’m not too fussed on the aesthetics of these). And now I’m all confused as to whether I should hunt for a hybrid or settle with a slightly older edition for now. 🤷🏼‍♀️ There’s so much to think about when buying a bloody car.

I think its sweet spot on the line up is the Touring GL version which is not CVT, not turbo and although it has a very weird infotainment, still it has incredible safety features and good ride quality, at least on paper. Love to know your idea about Mazda6, especially about its last update (since 2018).

I thought the Chevrolet Spark was the 1st with integrated rear door handles but after Googling I believe it was Alfa Romeo.

Not sure if quite as integrate, and probably not the first… but all the old Nissan Pathfinder rear door handles seemed to blend in pretty well, going back to early 90’s i believe.

Personally I enjoy the exterior appearance of my 2019, basically looks like a lifted hatchback. It’s not exactly quick, but the maintenance is a breeze and it’s quite cozy for long drives (took mine on a 1,600km drive recently)

Hey guys. I just love your channel. We have been look to replace our old car for a while now and have used your advice to focus on and do some crossing out of cars on our list. One thing you often mention is replacement head units but not to go for cheep "internet" specials. We have narrowed down our car choice to the HRV but will want to have the head unit replaced. Do you have a recommendation of a quality replacement. Please keep the content coming. You guys are brilliant.

So the aftermarket head units aren't as straight forward as made out- especially if you're wanting to maintain the blind spot monitor. I had a few quotes upwards pf $1300 supplied and fitted, so just good to take that into consideration.

This channel is only growing! Good stuff your guys are makings. I always liked the look of the HVR. Never had one. Think the first generation of Nissan Pathfinder had the back door’s handle hided. Know it might be not the focus of the channel, but what about a top 5 recommended first 4x4? Cheers

You should find the 1999/2000 model of the HRV - I owned the 3door and it was fantastic for the time. I wonder how they are holding up after all those years.

The people who report the uncomfortable seat may due to the protruded lumbar support. It cannot be adjusted and on a long drive, it potentially made your back to slide a bit into the edge

2:08 most countries could get a manual transmission and optional AWD (but only with the CVT). And 3:41 the first "car" with door handles like that was the Nissan Pathfinder/Terrano in 1987.

I purposely bought a new 2022 HR-V *LX* (Florida, USA) - because I wanted a CD PLAYER (this was the ONLY Honda with one ... Boo👎). And I did NOT want all the fussy, distracting Honda Sensing features - way too complicated and just more stuff to go wrong later. I thoroughly love this vehicle. About the only real drawbacks are 1) the lack of storage space/cubbies in the front and, 2) all the black cloth all over the interior door panels. Not a good idea. 👎 My 2022 HR-V LX doesn't have the piano black plastic anywhere on the center console - just around the A/C and heater controls. But it does show dust badly. This is a very pleasant car to drive. It handles beautifully and is quiet and solid-feeling. Plenty of "get-up-and-go." Super gas mileage too. I'm happy to recommend this particular Honda (my third Honda , since 1997). 👍💕

I hate that car makers don’t put CD players in a lot of their vehicles. I just traded my 2008 Lexus RX350 that had a cd and cassette player. I’m going really miss that lol.

Good stuff and good review. I would've liked hearing this same review of a manual transmission FWD version of this vehicle too. Curious if any reliability and or longevity opinions would be different? Thankyou for the time and effort spent in making this segment.

On safety, apparently this was one of 2 cars to receive a “Poor” side impact score when retested by the IIHS in 2021, the other being the Eclipse Cross. I think it’s good of them to raise the bar, it’s pointless to the consumer when every car gets 5 stars based on structural safety metrics from a decade ago. Even in that tougher crash test, most cars got a better rating of Marginal or Acceptable and only 1 got a “Good”. Worthwhile to checkout if you’re considering this car I think.

Noticed the same thing. Maybe that was their way of “fixing” the uncomfy seat - not that you should bc that defeats the entire point of a head restraint.

I knew of one that was purchased when they first came out that had major recurring engine management computer issues, it would tell the driver to pull over and turn off the car for 10 minutes and try restarting. Honda tried to say this was an isolated case but the owner heard that it was a known issue affecting many cars. I could find no record of it at the time when I searched to be fair, and that car got replaced by the face-lift version which they still own.

Hmmm Vti-S yes best spec for leather steering wheel. Whilst value reports they are zero fun hence we need a balance here as not everyone wants a fridge. Be good to compare to CH-R which gets optional AWD like the HRV gets in USA. Alfa 147 first with raised c pillar door handles? Slow down man also as your content too good to rush - that cutie in the boot btw was hot :) 😂🥰
