Just repaired an Honda Fit stuck in the middle of nowhere with these instructions. Honda: you should recall all your vehicle to fix this ignition issue, with 500k views, that means *A LOT* of people got this problem. Thanks!

And they make it a nightmare to repair. It's not helping security. There should be a way to quickly change the ignition cylinder from the assembly to address the faulty tumblers in the lock. While the ignition still kind of turns or before it fails. The customer could swap in a new cylinder. And with the original key held up to the immobilizer and the new key in the ignition drive to the dealership and get it programmed without spending $1200 dollars. This is not stopping any thieves. As this scenario involves having the original key and a broken lock cylinder. It cannot be exploited. Its a way to make thousands of dollars from a very cheap repair. They just change the cylinder out and charge you for an entire module.

You think it took you 20mn may be the personal satisfaction you rightfully got from this did not make you realise how time flew by because this is in no way a 20mn job. Remove the lock from your car does not even take 20mn. You must remove two security bolts that holds the housing to the steering column and removing thses only will take u more than 20mn then remove all thr connectors then remove the ring then the module then remove 2pin that hold the ignition switch to the housing is a pain.

I wanted to thank you for the video. You saved me a lot of money when everyone else said to replace the lock,re-key using a locksmith. I went to the local Honda dealership and they wanted $690.00 for the part,I don't want to imagine what the labor would have been,no doubt it would have sent the bill over $1000. Oddly enough I had a locksmith look at it;he gave up fiddling with it which almost necessitated a tow.

This worked! Iive in a very rural area. My key got stuck in ignition and wouldn't turn. Finally got the key out. Without this video, I was looking at a 70 mile tow to a shop that would have to order the part. I got this done and the car running while my two year took a nap! Saved me a $1000! I took out 7 worn levers to get it working smoothly with my spare key that is new. This will keep me going while I have the part on order. One tip, when taking the pin out to take the washer off the lock core, I had to remove the key chime bar and spring, and drill a hole through the extended arm on the tumbler (lock core housing, 4:45) order to punch out the roll pin, because I could not turn the key to position 1. THANKS!!!!! I can take my kids to soccer practice now!

Thanks for the video! I followed this advice to remove and repair a 2008 lock cylinder. My only problem was removing the pin at 3:21 in the video -- but it did eventually come out. I did not replace worn out pieces (2 of them), I just removed them. Funny thing, Honda did not include 1 piece, there was just an empty slot with no lever and no spring. This was much better than the Many-100's-of-Dollars the dealer wanted for parts and/or repair. Thanks!

Thanks so much. I successfully got the ignition barrel out of my friends Honda Civic 2007 1.4L Right hand drive European model last week. I did not need to remove the ignition assembly from the car. It helps to know that the expanded rollpin is 2mm diameter x 10mm long. I sprayed some loosening fluid into the pin and let it seep in. I then ground the tip off a 2mm diameter nail and used the nail to carefully gently and only slightly hammer tap the head of the pin. This to try release any binding between pin and its aluminum retaining wall. I then followed with your flat screwdriver gentle hammer tap method which worked to expose the rollpin head and I could then pull it out. Saved a load of time not having to try to get the 2 x blankheaded security bolts out.

I just wanted to thank you so much for showing us how to fix the damaged wafers in the ignition. The hardest part is getting that first pin out. I dang near went mad. Took about an hour before I got it out. Slightly different than your directions. I never removed the unit from the steering column. Honda Element '05. I removed all the wafers and now I can pull the key out while it's running. Not bad. Anyhow, you saved me $500 roughly, so I owe you a drink or something.

THANKEW! It took me a day and a half, but I FINALLY got the "seized" ignition switch going again. In the end, I just started pulling out tumblers (and springs) until the damn thing WORKED! Re-assembled everything and the switch works just fine. MANY thanks. Could not POSSIBLY have fixed my ignition switch without this video. (Which was particularly important as the switch "seized" with BOTH WINDOWS OPEN and it's been RAINING.) HIGHLY recommend this video. (Several others show how to remove the plastic steering wheel shrouds to get at this unit.)

I removed a couple of those worn out lock wafers & springs, lubed it up & now it feels like new again when I turn my key. Still theft proof because the key remains unique with 2 remaining wafers & besides.. its chipped! Here's your other video showing how to remove the ignition assembly that people in this situation will need to see. Remove Honda Ignition lock from steering wheel

Awesome Walkthrough! This saved me well over $300. I would caution everyone to be extra careful with the levers on the tumbler unless you want to lose a whole bunch of the levers. Other than this this is right on point with the information. PLEASE NOTE: This is NOT for changing the entire assembly out, its for repairing the original one. If you want to change the whole thing out then know that you will have to PROGRAM the New Key Set into the vehicle!

I got my 2004 Honda Civic fixed in a couple of hours. It took me longer because I couldn't remove the pin that you have to bang out. I ended up shearing it off by force. I just did this today. A few notes from my '07 Ody: T30 bit used to release the airbag portion, but regular Phillips used to take off the lower plastic guard under the steering wheel. Biggest problems were removing the roll pins that lock the key cylinder together. For the first one that you just 'Tapped Out' after loosening, I had to cut away the corner that confined it with a dremel wheel. For the last pin, I removed that long lever and drilled a hole down through the channel to it.Thanks!

Thanks for the great instructions, worked like a char on a 2003 Honda Odyssey van. Removed negative battery terminal, removed the steering column plastic shroud and after I unhooked a wiring harness the top I took the key mechanism off by using an oscillating tool with a 1 1/8" metal blade to cut a slot in each of the shear head bolts, a flat screwdriver then removed these bolts easily. Removed the wires for the immobiliser and the ignition switch and the key mechanism was out. Your video made fixing the lock cylinder easy thanks! Instead of fitting shear head bolts I got a pair of M8/1.25 x 16 cap head bolts from home depot, these worked perfectly. I truly appreciate being able to fix this for only the cost of new bolts ($1 US), as others have said this could have easily cost me $100 or more. It is great to be able to dig into the inside of the lock, see exactly how it works and what was wrong and re-use vs. replace. One of the most helpful you-tube posts. Hoping you have good fortune always!

Iocksmith from Massachusetts in the USA here. Our Honda ignitions are a bit different but same concept.. (we are mobile locksmiths) we drive out and do this repair wherever the owner gets stuck, we charge about $400 and takes about an hour. You did a great job explaining the repair. We do it a bit different but the 2 worst parts of our Honda ignitions is the security bolt removal and extracting the roll pin holding the lock cylinder in the ignition assembly. Great video my man very cool to see the difference between countries. I figured it would be the same, definitely isn’t 😂😂

You are right, Cars which doesn't have immobilizer can be repaired even without taking the lock out of steering column but we normally recommend that for professional use only as it is hardest to repair with lock inside the car. Some complicacy may arise if you accidentally rotate the steering wheel when lock barrel is out and it gets locked. It's rear but may then require you to take the whole lock out and rotate it anti-clockwise with a long screwdriver by inserting it at lock barrel's place.

Thank you so much for this video!! I was a bit nervous about taking the levers out and leaving them out. I left two levers in the ignition, just to have some kind of security. But if you follow these instructions carefully you too can save a bookoo money! I had to look up one another video in order to see how to get it off of steering column. I found one that works and saves alot of time. Use a small drill bit to drill a hole perpendicular to the first pin that keeps it connected to steering column, the hole gives better access to pull the the small roller pin, after you get the chip reader off (the black plastic)

This was a great video, helped me tremendously in fixing the ignition (key won't turn) on my 2003 honda odyssey. Without this I would not have been able to get the ignition cylinder out of the assembly. In the end I had two choices, just remove all tumblers and drive the car like that or have tumblers replaced. I chose the latter, $45 at the locksmith and the ignition is almost like new, key turns smoothly. Even after you get the ignition module detached from the steering and all cables, getting the ignition cylinder out of the module still requires some work. If you plan on replacing the tumblers, I recommend taking the ignition module to a locksmith who can replace the tumblers. They will take the cylinder out of the module and put it back in, saving you some time and effort.

THANK YOU. This never would have occurred to me to remove a pin or a lever - my ancient Civic has a pretty worn out key, and there was one of the pins that doesn't quite clear the tumbler anymore due to that so I couldn't get the key to turn, nor the spare, which was made after the many years of wear, except by random chance and wiggling it enough to get it out of the cylinder. It was actually wearing a divot inside the chamber that was catching it too and causing debris to get caught up in the works and wearing stuff even more! I was dismayed at the thought of getting the lock replaced, but taking out that one errant pin, I can now use it just like before, and not have to worry about it breaking off inside and making things worse! With the lock assembly out, should I be able to stick a screwdriver into the body and turn the metal piece in there? Because my won't turn. I took out the "levers" from the lock, but it still won't turn the rest of the assembly. The key turns if I have the lock part out of the housing, so I don't think it's the actual key/lock part that is causing the problem.

Two things on this: I'm a locksmith. The word "levers" is a misnomer, these are actually called "split wafer tumblers". Levers are something else entirely in locksmith terms. Also replacing the wafers does NOT always solve the issue, because if there is enough wear on the sides of the key then the key will still occasionally jam in the lock and not turn. This means getting a new key cut and programmed or cloned.
@carflipkeys10 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. When we first made this video. We kept Indian Locksmiths in mind who commonly refer it as levers. At first place this video was never ment for international audience but later we discovered that this video was more watched in other countries.
@carflipkeys10 жыл бұрын
The main cause of this problem is faulty / worn-out key and not wafers (levers) and most of the viewers (what we observed) remove the wafer(s) as they don't have access to new one which solves their purpose. Although we still recommend them a new key after repair.

Hi dl3mcd3 Removing the lever and doesn't replacing them back will not cause any problem. It will just make the probality higher that some other honda key might start working in that lock but that is acceptable as no one has time to try 100's of key to open a car.

Hardly takes 1 hour. Work Done.

the video is informative and very easy to understand. I can tell you know what you are doing and how to properly show someone else. overall I'd say it's a pretty Sikh video bro :-)

Hey! Thanks for this lifesaver video! You're a real hero. The only question remains: where can I get those new levers? Any clue?

Many thanks. I just removed all of the levers/springs for my Honda Odyssey 2002 2.3L Some were "missing" (empty slots) and broken and the remaining were repeatedly sticking up when inserting/removing the key. The lever assembly pin just fell out after a single light tap on my vice. Later it easily broke when I tapped it back in. So I tapped in a rivet stem then hack sawed the rest off. I also used a rivet to tap out the pin in the cylinder washer/spacer. I had to remove the lever (to allow the rivet to tap the pin out), by removing the small plastic cap about 1/2 way along. Care though - there is a little spring hidden under that cap. Probably replace the entire cylinder lock and levers/wafers with a new one. Where abouts did you get your levers from? Some kits on eBay but mainly for Ford and GM. Thanks again. Mike, Auckland, New Zealand.

I did this exact repair, step by step and saved myself a ton of cash, hardest part was using a punch to turn in/out the security bolts, but thanks for this!
