Just bought it month ago and I love it. Just couple things: Cons: 1. Completely lack of power. Be prepared to be overtaken, been signaled by horn or lights from cars behind. Pressing pedal, seems to be nothing happens, only engine noise. At first was huge disappointment, after get use it. 2. Do not be excited about speed limiter. This one limits a bit car acceleration even from 0. Pros: Many! Cant be happy enough, easy and comfy drive, easy perfect parking. In my Ex navi, I just come to car, open doors with hand (keyless handle sensor), press start (key in pocket) and drive straight away. Thats it, simple like that. not to mention seat belt and warning screen button push - more hard job than start driving this car. Lights, rain wipers automatic, collision warning and many other functions. Saying that because remember in my Ford fiesta before drive, I need 1 minute keep pressing button, knobs, handles and so on. When u sweated enough, you ready to drive :) But Honda Jazz... its very near to autopilot :)

I'm currently looking at a 2015 Honda Jazz, it's the manual version 1.5, 4 cylinder. I currently have a 2012 ford focus and the quality is not that great as I have replaced the steering rack and the car still only has 64 thousand kilometers on it. it also burns some engine oil. I'm thinking of trading it for a little newer small car but a better brand like Honda or toyota

In the US we get the 1.5 liter gasoline engine. No choice. I think its the same design. Direct fuel injection, variable valve lift. However climate control is NOT available in the US! And of course, there's no thermometer to show the cabin temperature. Nor are speed limiters or parking sensors or a few other things, available here. But every model comes with a rearview camera. Unfortunately, it only works with the gear lever in reverse. Limits opportunities for observing what's going on behind you. I don't like planetary gear automatics but I really like the CVT. The CVT actually has FASTER acceleration than the 6-speed manual. And uses less fuel. I don't have any problem putting the throttle to the floor when I want to accelerate. I guess I don't have a subconscious. Put the pedal to the floor and the engine revs up to near redline and STAYS THERE while the CVT does all the work of bringing the car up to speed. It is wonderful for passing on the freeway, merging onto the freeway. As I merge onto the freeway, I often see the other drivers on the freeway moving over or slowing down for no reason - not realizing how fast my little car can accelerate. Paddle shifters are silly; they only slow down your acceleration. The brakes are adequate. Running at redline the engine will sound loud - but it is only about 8.8 seconds until you reach 96 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour). 9.1 seconds if you have the manual transmission. The car will roll along on a flat surface at 100 kph, with the engine humming quietly at 2000 rpm. More wind noise than engine noise. I'm thinking the 1.2 liter engine would probably sound about the same at redline, as the 1.5, but simply take an extra second or so to reach 100 kph, and it should require maye slightly more than 2000 rpm to run on a flat surface at this speed - but still do so quietly. Yes, the supension, especially the rear, is a bit stiff. The rear of the car - which is very light - seems to almost become airborne when I drive over speed bumps without slowing down to near-zero. If feels like the rear wheels roll up the bump, reach the top, and become airborne - don't come back down until the car has travelled a few feet ahead of the bump. Both rear wheels just fall down after awhile landing a foot ahead of the bump and a foot to the side. Even if the bump is under only ONE rear wheel if feels like both rear wheels go flying up. The gas tank hump intrudes into the foot space for the front seats passengers. With the seats all the way back, it extends about 6 inches ahead of the front of the seats. It inteferes with bringing my feet back and my knees up. I like to switch between that position, and legs extended, in order to avoid keeping my legs in one position for too long. But in the Jazz-Fit, I can't do that. That's my biggest complaint about the car.

+Theodore Zuckerman That's the thing: you seem to be doing a lot of freeway driving, where the CVT is not that much of a nuisance. I get the advantages that come with CVT, but for city/non-freeway driving it's just not the most pleasant sound you get from an otherwise pretty decent car.

+Marek Drives I do some freeway driving but most of my driving is around town (small city located in a mountain valley). I agree the sound of the CVT makes when you are accelerating is not the most pleasant but I don't mind it too much - and once you get onto the freeway you never hear it again. On the freeway and around town the FEELING of acceleration is, in my view, actually superior to that of a planetary automatic. It doesn't feel like you are accelerating! But you are! Faster than you can with the manual gearbox. You just press down on the throttle pedal and before you know it, the car has reached the speed you want. I hear noise but I don't feel any "rubberband" effect from it. I'm not sure why people use that term. I like the way the tiny high-compression (11.5 to 1) engine revs up. I think the CVT could possibly benefit from more sound insulation. The car has this dreadful combined carpeting-insulating-material on the floors instead of carpeting on top of separate batting. And the carpet-like surface of this stuff is really cheap-looking. I put some batting on the bare metal in the spare tire well, surrounding the spare tire, and I acquired some custom-fitted carpet-mats with heavy carpet, for the front and rear seating area (including the middle position in the rear, and under the rear seats), but I haven't noticed any decrease in noise. Perhaps in the future engineers might come up with things to better dampen the sound from a CVT. A manual gearbox with 6 (or 5) gear ratios with a low-powered engine can be a nuisance on the freeway. Go up even a slight to moderate incline at 100 km/hr, and you may have to downshift from 6th to 5th to avoid lugging the engine, and then you'll have to shift back into 6th when the highway levels off if you want to have good fuel economy. If you had a transmission with only 3 or 4 gears, it could be designed so that shifting between the 2 top gears at highway speeds would not be necessary - at the cost of always keeping the engine at a higher rpm at highway speeds and using more fuel. You could also always leave the 6-speed in 5th, at 100 km/hr - also at the cost of using more fuel. The worse noise comes from the styrofoam "tool tray" that covers the spare tire. I know that the styrofoam "tool tray" provides sound and heat insulation, and provides support for the floor of the cargo area, but the sound and the feeling that comes from lifting up that atrocious thing in order to get to the spare tire - that is REALLY unpleasant. It is like chalk on a blackboard. Similar styrofoam within various body panels - where it is pretty well hidden - adds insulation and rigidity. Only in the spare tire area is it "in your face' - and in your ear. Coating it with cheap cloth or even just a cheap hard plastic shell would have done a lot to lend some refinement.

Dear Marek, first of all congratulations for your videos. Very nicely made and I like your sense of humour :) I would like to have some advice from you: I have been looking for a super mini/segment B and I´m still waiting to see and test all models I have selected: Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, Kia Rio, Nissan Note and Hyundai i 20. Only looking at reliability, safety, boot space, comfort and warranty, what would be the one(s) that outstand(s) in your opinion from list or maybe other car I left out from it? Thank you!

+André Gouveia From the above list I would look at Honda Jazz (it's the newest model, so it will have all the latest safety equipment) and Toyota Yaris (like Honda it's synonymous with reliability). I think Honda interior also feels a bit more premium, than the Toyota. I haven't heard any horror stories regarding the Rio or Hyundai, but they are getting so expensive these days I'd rather go with a brand, which will hold its resale value. Nissan is pretty old now. It does have the Safety Shield option, which makes it safer, but that's only on top spec models. And you have to go turbo, while the others still offer naturally aspirated engines, which will generally be more reliable. I'm not saying Nissan's engine is a dud, but in the long run I'd expect something will go wrong with a turbo engine first. Mazda 2 is the smallest of the bunch, it is pretty expensive, and (at least the test model I spent two weeks with) was badly screwed together. So to sum up, Honda ticks all your boxes, Toyota is second, the Euro-Koreans are third.

I am also thinking of getting the Jazz, mostly for Honda's legendary reliability and customer satisfaction, but also for its resale value potential. I'd like to ask how do Jazz's FCW and LDW systems work, if you know, or if you can find out. All info that I have found in the web only address the Civic and the Accord, which I think have more advanced systems. Thanks and keep up the good work.

archangelhorus I don't remember what they were like in the Jazz, but in a Civic they beep a lot, and I turned them off. Especially LDW is annoying because rather than just light up a yellow light, it beeps quite a lot in city traffic.

Well at the early days of CVT they looked as a fashion gadgets, but now it is obviously a compromise between price and usability. So for a many car users (I cannot call them a "drivers") it is a good choice. Another thing is a noise. Marek didnt tell us about a road noise, but only about aerodynamic after 100 kph. As for myself, I ve been dissapointed even by last Skoda Octavia in compare with 10 years old Passat, and I as think, a road noise is one of the major problems even in a medium segment at the moment.

Thank you for the great review. I like Honda Jazz and I accept all the flaws u have mentioned. To mention another annoying fact is the problem with the steering obstructing the visibility of some of the indicators, no matter how u adjust it. Sadly i can't find one for a test drive and according to other reviews (few that i trust) jazz has a lack of feel of the steering compared to the previous generation. This is a concern to me. Can you pls give me your opinion conserning this aspect? Do you think the steering is well wighted (direct, or precise) and jazz can be fun to drive with a manual transmision? Marek are the prices you mention in the video suppose to be the ones for the Polish market? Because they seem rather high in each of your reviews and i thought that the polish prices are one of the lowest in EU, stated by some German journalists a few years ago. Honda Jazz starts in Slovakia with the Trend trim on 12990, 13990 on the Comfort trim and 15590 with the Elegance trim. Keep up the good work, like your videos, you are complaining about stuff that nobody else really mentions.

And yes, in case of mass brands prices in Poland are usually lower, than in Western Europe. Only luxury cars are considerably more expensive in Poland. The Jazz I have in this review costs around 18,700 euro in Poland (including VAT).

***** Thanks for this comment. I didn't know you can get lower insurance premium in France, if you choose a car with more safety systems. In Poland the premium is based mainly on the catalogue price. As far as discounts are concerned, it's a matter of dealer policy and customer's bargaining skills. For example until recently Citroen in Poland was a discount brand, offering 20 percent off the sticker price just for entering the showroom. This policy didn't pay off, because of low residual value. After many years they decided to go for a less flexible pricing scheme. It's true, in stop-start traffic the CVT is as good as anything. But it's more annoying in 30-60 range. But reliability should be better, than with DSG, and general experience may be better, than with traditional automatics. The problem of dealers not calling back is also a problem in Poland. It's as if they are selling so many cars, they don't have to fight for clients. How many new cars are sold in France? In Poland it's barely 300k annually.

Great car and good review. Honda engines are made to be reved (VTEC kicks in yo!) and I'm also very fond of CVT. It's just a different kind of engine experience - imagine you're sitting in an airplane and the captain puts thrust on full power. You wouldn't be pleased as passenger to hear "shift" brakes on the jet engines in your aircraft, nor you would like them to have the same "reliability" as DCT transmissions of Volkswagen or Ford cars... :o)

+Marek Drives CVTs accelerate faster than either manuals or planetary gear (conventional) automatics. They do so more smoothly. As far as how they OPERATE, I can't think of ANY advantage to a planetary automatic over a CVT. The only possible shortcoming I can think of that MAY be a problem for a CVT, is long-term reliability. The weak link in re to wear in a planetary is the braking "bands." The weak link in re to wear in a CVT is the segmented belt and pulley friction surface. How long will these hold up? Will we be seeing broken belts? Will the pulley surfaces wear to the point that they introduce belt slippage? We don't have a large amount of long-term real world road-proven info yet. Instead of a very complex set of tiny tubes to control shift points, we have sensors and a computer chip, and very simple hydraulically operated pulley-halves. Replacement computer chips may be overpriced but MOST of them will last for 20 years. If they do fail aftermarket chips at lower prices may become available for popular model cars. Initial costs for CVTs are lower than planet-autos and repairing CVTs may involve lower labor costs and lower parts costs. Still, there is a lot of labor just getting the engine and transmission out of and into the car.

"It's not very good at maneuvering" ?? Please explain! CVT is more frugal and has BETTER acceleration than the manual. I love putting my throttle pedal to the floor to merge onto limited access highways and pass vehicles on the highway. Engine rapidly goes up to near redline and STAYS PUT at that speed, while the CVT figures out how to get the car to catch up as fast as possible. Fantastic acceleration - but you don't feel it. Yes the CVT is noisy and the car lets lots of wind noise and road noise in. The HVAC fan is also very noisy on high speed, which you need to get the car to cool off as quickly as possible. The AC is not very powerful.

At 7:18 is where I found your remark about maneuvering: "The parking sensors and reversing cameras are a wise choice - because this car, despite its segment - it's not very good at maneuvering." I got the info about the CVT having better acceleration from an edmunds.com review of the 2015 US model (with a 1.5 liter engine). They measured the acceleration of the model with the manual transmission at a few 10ths of a second less than 9 seconds from 0 to 60 mph (about 100 km/h) and the CVT at about 2/10 of a second less. The reverse of what you said - it seems to me the CVT is way more convenient at stop-and-go driving than the manual transmission, but for freeway driving it doesn't have much of a convenience advantage over the manual. It is not so hard to drop the car into a lower gear in order to get more torque and acceleration, in order to merge or pass, which you may need to do, now and then, and then go back up to higher gears when you can do so. But in stop-and-go traffic you have to shift gears every few seconds; it is a constant battle to get the car into an appropriate gear. With a traffic jam lasting for an hour, constantly shifting gears can become rather fatiguing. I see only 2 disadvantages for the CVT (other than the extra initial cost). One is the outrageous amount of noise. However the noise doesn't make me timid about putting the throttle pedal to the floor. Not sure why it tends to have that effect on you. The second disadvantage is that I have questions about longetivity. CVTs from Nissan and other car makers (Jatco CVTs) have had problems. Apparently Honda's CVTs last for awhile, but I don't feel assured that it will go on almost indefinitely like a Honda manual transmission generally will. Pairs of gears are just much more rugged, and historically more well-proven devices than a series of belt elements pushing against a laser-etched pulley surface.

I think Nissan Note is more practical. It even has an excellent mileage-prooven diesel engine. The only option it's missing is folding rear seats. I don't really care about it. You probably will use it once a year. So, Note - is my choice of a compact city car.

What I think is if reliability and practicality is in first place I think is one of the best cars in the world witch comes with a higher price point! But normally everyone should think of the total cost, becouse if it's cheap to run, with low service costs and high resale value it could be a win again. On the other hand nothing is perfect in this world, this is not a hot hatch and the becouse of the CVT if you push it it's noisy but it's still good enaugh for day to day driving coz it's really smooth. What I don't understand is why didn't Honda bring just yet the 1,5 litre 130 Hp engine from the US, the Diesel from India and the Hybrid from Japan !?

+Csaba Kovacs Well, the problem with CVT for me is that in low revs it does nothing, in mid-range it's noisy, and only in high revs you don't care about the noise any more, because the car goes like stink. In the city it takes away all the fun from driving. I want to get out, and leave it in the middle of the street. Honda better keep their hybrids in Japan. They are too expensive, and benefits are slim to none. This petrol engine will probably run longer, than the chassis can support it ;) You're right about TCO. Unfortunately not many people look at it that way, because it's boring numbers to them.

+Marek Drives Why is the TCO anything special in Hondas? In my experience the reason why the japanese cars are often quoted as "reliable" is that nothing in particular can be said about them, especially with superminis and hatches. Very, very bland cars. Engines are...correct, nothing more, even often wrongly paired with car in terms of power, size or transmissions. Had 3 Hondas in company, 2 Civics and 1 Jazz, some of my neighbours drive similar japanese cars, never saw anything special about their TCOs. Maybe some old ppl in USA have no problem with them after very long usage time, but honestly I really cannot fathom why are those cars so appreciated. Quite often they are lagging in many areas, especially ride quality.

Zadrigo Total cost of ownership includes maintenance, repairs, insurance, fuel, etc. The more reliable a car is, the lower are its repair costs. I suppose with older (perhaps wiser?) people driving them, insurance rates could be lower too.

Hi Marek, I guess you are right. I tried when the car is in P and there wasn't any noise. Now another issue occurs because they were thinking it's because of breakes. That's why they replaced the break pads with the new ones about two months ago and even the next day of that replacement the noise was continuing. At this point they still don't know how to fix it.

Assuming you took it easy for the first couple of dozen km to break in the new brake pads, everything should be fine. Generally I find brakes in cars with automatic gearbox tend to squeak a bit, when you release them very slowly in traffic. Try releasing the brake normally (as to let the car roll), and holding the brake just to let the car crawl half an inch. In the latter case you may get some squeaking noise. If the noise is present during normal braking (i.e. stopping before a crossing, etc.) then there is a number of problems, which may be related to pads or disks (wear, breaking in, using low quality substitutes replacement parts, dust/dirt, etc.).

Hi Marek, I spoke with Honda again and they said "There is nothing wrong with this car so there is nothing we can do." I'm speechless. I asked them if other cars have the same problem and they said "no" but still they are saying there is no noise and there is nothing wrong with the car. I think I'll pass the issue to the lawyers. I love the comment on the CVT gearbox and driving like a 'knob'. lol seriously though I am looking at a CVT in my next car. not sure if I would get fed up with the gearbox though

+BillyNoMates1974 A couple of weeks ago I drove an Auris 1.2 turbo CVT. The review is waiting to be edited. With a turbo CVT is less of a bother, because extra torque pulls you up to speed without forcing CVT to slide too much. Try driving a car with naturally aspirated engine + CVT, and perhaps try the Auris 1.2 turbo with CVT. And then make up your mind. With the Jazz it's a deal-breaker, because it takes away all the fun of driving an agile city car.

+Marek Drives OK, but what is wrong with forcing the CVT to do what it was designed to do - increase your torque by increasing engine speed? It will rapidly jump to a higher gear ratio (lower gear number) as the engine rapidly revs up to max RPM. Then while the engine stays at that high-torque RPM the CVT can "slide" down to lower ratios as the car picks up speed. So what puts more stress on the engine and causes more wear - revving it to high speed in order to produce more torque, or forcing air into it in order to produce more torque at low speed? I don't know the answer to that question. Also I don't know how much wear is placed on the CVT every time one pulley gets bigger in diameter whilst the other gets smaller. But I do know that CVT's seem to do this jump to a high ratio and then "slide" down through lower and lower ratios, very smoothly.

The problem with the hatchback is the sloping hatch, it takes away your cargo space. The TARDIS like Fit/Jazz is enormous inside for such a small car on the outside.

Great video of an interesting car. I currently own a 2016 VW Polo 1.2 TSI petrol with DSG gearbox. I am considering changing to a Honda Jazz. This video gives me lots to consider / think about.
