Honda NC750X bike review

I've owned 11 different bikes from a KLR 250 to a Honda Goldwing over my 45 years of riding. I bought a used 2018 DCT (only 1,200 miles on it) mostly because I had hand surgery on my left hand and pulling a clutch was becoming painful. This is the best all around bike I've ever owned and the DCT is absolutely brilliant! Its plenty fast, has ridiculously great gas mileage and I've never gotten more thumbs up from people which is a testament to its beauty.

I've owned mine for a few months now, the 2017 model and I would say I think the acceleration is impressive. Of course not a sports bike but good at doing its job. I've done over 3,000 miles and love it. The storage compartment is genius. When others have to have panniers on the bike I already have a storage compartment built in.

What's the hp? I believe 700 and 750 are both around 54 hp. I have the NC700, and as a first year rider I will gladly dispute that they "fly" lol. I was bored with the power by month 2.

@@porkchop10 Then you're not riding it right. I have owned 6 Hayabusa's, and a 2020 ZZR1400 and round the twisties the NC750 doesn't get thrashed. It all depends on the riders skills, which clearly you think yours are already better than they are..aka "an accident waiting to happen". I politely suggest you: A) Get some decent training B) Read, then re-read 'Roadcraft'...

I love it so much I have two. A 2013 NC700S that has now a flawless 83000km and a NC750S from 2014 that I bought with only 4000km and now has 11000 km. Made a few changes to customize them to my purposes like crash bars, led lights, slip on, foldable brake levers and some gearing changes. Absolutely brilliant bikes determined not to sell them . @Blac Lead Actually I just completed 102.000km and the bike still runs like day one. I don't baby the engine, however I also don't torture it. Maybe my maintenance is over the top and I could have saved some money but the bike is also growing in sentimental value for me. I do check the valve clearance regularly and do make oil changes every 4000km. That is below the recommend interval but I truly believe that oil is the lifeblood of the engine. I did change the injectors last week for the first time, kind of like a late 100.000km birthday present. But other than that just the usual stuff, spark plugs, brake pads, new brake rotors, since the old ones were down to minimum thickness, sprockets and chain, air filters etcetera. Biggest problem arising is that the headlight plastic is so deteriorating that I need to replace that in the near future since it really is affecting the efficiency of the light. That pretty much sums it up. Safe rides 👍🏍

To anyone considering this bike - please, do yourself a favor and get one! It's comfy, it'll do whatever you want it to do, so long as you're not racing anyone on the straights, and the maintenance intervals are so far apart, you'll forget how your mechanic looks like! Get any one you can. I bought a 2012 exactly one year ago and it had 83K KM. It now has 102K and, aside from regular maintenance, it hasn't visited the shop once. Always starts right up, stable at any weather, it's simply great and honestly I don't know what more can you ask from a street bike! Just perfect. Let's see if I can get it to one million KMs.

It's a stunner, mine's in blue. In slow moving traffic, the DCT really comes into it's own and you'll wonder why you ever needed a clutch. Running it in ("first 300 miles, ride conservatively, avoid full throttle") I'm getting 68-73mpg and would expect 65+mpg when run in using sports mode 3. Sure, it's no sportsbike, but if revving the guts out of your bike and doing 90mph all the time isn't for you, then this is a 'sensible' alternative. It does everything pretty well for what it is. The low CofG is great for walking speed/feet up control and makes it easy to ride. Braking and handling seem fine and the 'dummy tank' is useful for your helmet or other storage. I find it comfy, but the seat can feel hard to some people. Seat height is quite tall, I'm 5' 8" and a bit, 29" inside leg, and it's balls of the feet both sides which is fine for me. I would definitely recommend a test ride of this bike before buying as it is different and won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Don't forget the 270° crank firing, the more I learn about it, the more I enjoy the sound and power delivery and I believe it contributes to the economy as well. Its only been in production twins since 1996, bravo to Honda for using it.

good review and a nice video! I have the NC 750 S DCT 2016 Modell and I really love that bike. It's great and uncomplicated to ride and I never felt underpowered at all! In the mountains, in the City on a country road or on the German Autobahn its a cool ride everywhere.

S for Sport means you're in Sport mode. There are 3 different Sport modes. If you want to change gears yourself you go into M Mode, which is the trigger in front of the throttle, labeled A/M.

Maikkeru Mitsuru no but I crossed Vietnam from south to north with a backpack and sometimes on a 125cc scooter. The NC will be totally fine in Vietnam :) don’t worry. I traveled to more than 100 countries in my life and I would go to everyone of them with the NC:)

Having ridden four versions - 700S, 750X, 750S and 750S DCT - in my opinion the 750S manual is the best version, with noticeably better handling than the X. It's also cheaper. After 15,000 miles and zero issues I'd thoroughly recommend the bike.

Coming from a typically full emotional VFR800 VTEC this has been an adjustment, however every thing mentioned here is true to the core, whilst motorcycles have reached their peak in performance slash risk ratios including the likes of license terminations, fines and even jail sentences the NC has brought back what motorcycles were initially designed for, enjoying the ride without the worry. Perhaps I'm just getting older but prior to my purchase of the NC I almost bought a Blackbird which certainly raised my heart beat leaving me with hand tremors, but I honestly cannot remember a thing about the trip other than holding on to dear life. So in my case it suites the purpose beautifully and one day for my second bike I'll get another VFR.

Had a blue 2017 manual. Brilliant bike, excellent build quality, fuel lasted well, plenty of power. Comfy etc. Only sold it as i knackered my shoulder up in work. (Id recommend a rear wheel hugger, rain tyres)

I've been saving up for one. Meanwhile I seen a lot of these reviews. Almost no reviews mention the ton of aftermarket items available. Nor do they mention how the New Concept idea extends to the entire repair and maintenance of the bike. It's is one of the easiest bikes to work on for a mechanic. It also is a great platform for a long distance adventure bike. Lastly for a bike with "no character", there are very few used ones available and they all seem to have way higher mileage then most bikes.

The air cleaner is not too flash to replace! Perhaps a revision somewhere down the track. Of coarse you need to remove the radiator to do the tappet's although at least they are adjustable as opposed to having to use shims.

We are on our second set of NC's . First we had the manual versions and in 2018 after a test riding the DCT model ordered two and put our Manual models up for sale. Like many here I have piles of motorcycles and still have several manual transmission bikes but none are more fun in Manitoba twisty road lake country with its hilly banked and off camber curves and corners than my NC. I feel not all like a scooter and more like LH44 when picking my lines and braking at the last minutes while the computer takes care of the engine braking and shifting. I love my NC and would recommend one to anyone.

Most important to note for experienced conventional bike riders : You can downshift instantly and manually, even while in Drive or Sports Mode and without changing to Manual Mode, or even changing the throttle (rev limiter will prevent engine overstress). In my opinion, this is the single most important and essential feature it offers. I had a lot of inner resistance against changing to auto riding, and realised this was what bothered me - so once I found this could be done, it made all the difference. Of course, you will not be needing this function all the time - all the same, it's essential to be able to manually drop a gear or two at all times, and when the necessity comes around, you do not want to rely on an algorhythm to get you out of a tight spot.

As below you've got the explanation of the DCT wrong. Sports mode is still automatic. It just stays in gear for longer.

In addition, you can manually shift gears also while in D mode. Useful for motor braking, or overruling the automatic. The toggle matching your description is the "A(utomatic)/M(anual)" switch, functionally different from the "S(port)/D(rive)" switch. You can see it at 2:50 just left of the right brake lever.

The S modes aren't for manual driving, but the computers will shift at different RPM's making it a bit more "S"portier , you switch automatic & manual with the button on the front of the right side. In the D, S1, S2, S3 mode you can also always switch yourself if you want to brake on engine for example.

I have a 2012 NC700X with manual transmission. For commuting, errands, and dirt roads (with better tires), it's an outstanding bike. The best way I can describe the bike, is that it's a lot like your daily driver car, but quicker and without the cage. If I'm running errands or commuting, I'll ride this over my sport bike. I used to commute 100+ miles a day on a sport bike. That experience is WHY I'd commute on the NCX over a sport bike. Add a drink holder, and you can even pick up fast food using the "frunk", and I'd much rather maneuver this bike around a parking lot than a big cruiser, or a Goldwing. If you'd like to spend more time on your motorcycle than weekend rides, this is how you do it. Unless you are Valentino Rossi (hint, you aren't), and you aren't into cosplay (*cough* Harley owners *cough*), you should park your ego and stop calling it a scooter. Would I get one with DCT? If they still offer the foot shift kit, definitely.

Looking at getting one very soon as my commuter. How is it passing traffic that's doing 65mph? I presently ride a RF900 so passing at those speeds is not a problem.

@@jumparound2502 The bike has a power band more like a V-Twin cruiser than a sport bike, and it's geared to be most effective at legal speeds. The top speed is over 100 mph, but acceleration isn't as quick as you get faster. The motor is tuned for torque more than horsepower. Passing at 65 mph is easy, at 75 it's not quite as quick but still better than cars, etc... It's not going to be anything like the RF900 though. The RF900 can probably break any speed limit in 3rd gear or less, where the NC would probably be in 5th. The NC is a lot more comfortable than a sport bike, especially in heavy traffic, and it's fun to ride, but pure adrenaline it's not.

You didn't mention ease of servicing! It seems a well thought out bike with low centre of gravity like the Ducati Scrambler. The only issue I could find was the servicing or changing the air cleaner was a very fiddly affair with the risk of panel pins being damaged. For ADV use it's interesting they have chosen to use 17" wheels front and rear. Even the Scrambler has an 18" front wheel which makes rolling over stones in fords or river crossings easier to navigate. Otherwise it sounds really awesome and I'd be keen to go for a test ride.

One of the first things you need with this bike is a bigger windscreen. I went with the Puig, which is the cheapest and simplest to install, but could use one of the more expensive brands for 70mph+ highway riding.

I'm gonna buy one because they're now here in the U.S but I'm not interested in the DCT, I'm getting rid of my CTX700DCT Because I miss the availability of having the clutch for emergencies, also I've found that sometimes with sudden stops the bike still wants to lurch forward, which is pretty scary.

I've been riding the rebel 300 2017 since late April and overal, I love the 80+ mpg I get as long as I keep her at 50mph and slower consistently and refuel around the 100 to 128miles consumed mark weekly. However, with an inseam of 32" and wearing motorcycle boots ( adds another 1.5 to 2 inches of leg length/height), I"m cramped and it's starting to get old. I have no excuses as I couldn't wait any longer to get a dependable piece of transportation and knew I would be alittle cramped, but now that I've heard of the nc700 series of bikes, I realize this given the seat height in relation to the length from seat to pegs will pretty much solve that problem and I still want the 70+ mpg. I'm hoping the mpg is correct on the 750x, if so, i'll be picking one up also. Cheers.

Got the old 700 and went on a few long trips. It's the perfect tourer! Could do with a bit more power, but I guess your 750 will supply that. Extremely comfortable and great mileage. The only thing I will add for these long trips are a pair of pegs which I will attach to the front chassis bars, to stretch my legs. Also, a tall screen will help. Ride safe!

I rode my 2014 NC750X from one side of Canada to the other and back again this summer. Nearly 20,000 kilometres round trip and the bike handled it all like a champ. The only challenge I had was with 80+ km/h winds coming at me from the left side (off the Bay of Fundy) that made it a real challenge to keep the bike in the proper portion of the lane, but that was 5 km out the rest of the trip. Warm, cold, wet, dry, mountains, prairies... this bike handled it all.

It’s not half a car engine. That was a joke from a Honda engineer. The engine of the older Fit/Jazz had a similar SOHC with rocker arms valvtrain design that’s about it.

If you are a knowledgeable motorcyclist you will know that hp is not the only factor in the equation...There is something called torque as well...Read it up... The NC is one of the best selling bikes in the world..obviously doing something right..

John Roe- The NC700X has been in USA since 2010. I’ve happily commuted on my NC700X since 2010. On USA fuel, hence the ethanol-gasoline blend, my fuel economy is very consistently 62MPG. I several reasons I strongly recommend the DCT for commuting. My DCT has been flawless. When the traffic light turns green you can slam the throttle open and every single time the DCT computer perfectly feathers the clutch. The NC700X launches extremely well, extremely quick off the starting line. I regularly pick up a bag of groceries or Chinese take-out food, just drop it into the “frunk”. I like the bike to be clean looking with no side or top cases. With the “frunk” the bike always has a place to carry something.

Does this nc750x really get over 70mpg if ridden easily ( as in keeping it consistently below 75mph on the highway and not trying to do 0-50 in less than 8 seconds)? Legit question as mpg is my priority. Honda already has the dependability down pat.

I get between 73.5 mpg (US miles) and 60 mpg, depending on driving style, which is 3.2 to 3.9 l/100km - the manufacturer stated fuel use is almost exactly between those two values. Btw, fuel efficient doesn't have to mean "slow acceleration". Slow but longer lasting acceleration in a non-efficient rpm range is more fuel consuming than getting to speed quickly at optimum efficiency rpm, then "sail". Keeping engine rpm close to best efficiency is facilitated by the DCT.

V Twin? How can that be half of an engine? Is the Jazz a v4 then?

"emulated" V twin as result of a twisted crank shaft. V in terms of ignition points, not by physical layout. You could say, a V engine with one cylinder rotated to the point that the layout looks like parallel twin. Also, it's not exactly half a Jazz engine - what it means is that (some) parts of a Jazz engine were reused for this engine, such as pistons.

Yes - it can be. Dual Clutch transmission, gears changed by hydraulics, operated by computer or manual up-/downshift paddle. "Or" can be inclusive or exclusive - that's what the A(utomatic)/M(anual) toggle is for. Automatic mode is default, and selected when ignition is turned on.

I had a Honda CB650R and then I bought this bike because I thought "Well I'm in my mid 50's I don't really have the patience to withstand wind blast on my CB650R..." so I bought the NC750X and what a disappointment, it took forever to overtake a car on the highway and that made it dangerous. I made my NC as comfortable as possible but it was as exciting to ride as a seesaw after the age of 15, so I got rid of it and got the CBR650R and what a blast to ride what thrills much better than the CB650R due to the fairing and with a quickshifter I could overtake just about any car with little to no effort. To be honest, the NC750X is great but you need to ride it like it's a car and don't try to overtake other vehicles because the NC doesn't have the power to respond and then it becomes dangerous, it's a great bike if you're going to ride it like a cruiser it's not made for speed.

And since Honda couldn't much give a rip about the USA, we get the de-contented, dumbed down 670cc version of this, which doesn't look as nice, doesn't have all of the same features.

I tried it. It's too "down to earth" in a boring way. Although I'm a beginner and it supposed to "suit" me but I felt bored quickly. Not my type.
