Can you give some help in how to calculate size of the resonator? I am trying to find a shop to help me and none of the ones I have approached know what a Helmholtz resonator is or how to design it. ANy help would be great. THanks

What you need to understand is that it will only eliminate certain frequencies at certain rpm. In order to get rid of the drone you will have to see where the drone of the exhaust start and peaks according to rpm. On a different levels you might want to install two resonators that deals with low rpm resonance and another that deals with high rpm resonance. Also before any boxes installed as you might get mid pipe resonance as well. Free flow or straight pipe exhaust are different ball game. In fact a bit rice to be honest. But find the rpm and build a resonator for that rpm with propper calculations... Magic

Thanks for your comment, that's exactly what I did :) Mid pipe resonator for high end RPM and Helmholtz resonator calibrated on 100Hz for the 3000RPM frequency. Helmholtz resonator works on a wider range of frequencies. I don't have drone any more on my Prelude and it doesn't sound raspy at all with the Magnaflow

@@jneusbaum3697 H22a engine on a 1998 Prelude 5th Gen. Full custom stainless piping, no cat but mid-pipe resonator and a Magnaflow exhaust at the end. You could definitely benefit from my Helmholtz resonator. It's the best of both worlds, no drone but still kinda loud on the outside ;)

@@crenshaw4372 Crenshaw. Wow! thanks for the quick response. How much trial and error did you endure to get your sound the way it is? My goal would be to hear the engine a bit while shifting and have it level out for cruising speed with out being annoying. Well...not annoying unless I want it to be when running thru the gears. Would rather not have it annoying at stop lights like the high bass stereos in some cars. Is this a realistic goal? If so...any suggestions for part specific exhaust would be off the charts appreciated. The car is a 97 Accord with 2.2l engine. I can't seem to find a resonator that fits the 97. +Kok Seng Wong i've sent you a PM ;) I can't share it here lol, it's a bit more complicated than a simple formula ^^ It also depends of the drone frequency of your car, vary from type of motor (number of cylinders mainly) and car. I recommend to do a sound analysis to confirm the theoretical calculus !

Hey man great vid. Did your resonator only kill drone or did it also quiet your exhaust? Reason I ask is because I like the aggressive note of my exhaust and don't want to quiet it but I want to reduce some cruising drone. Every resonator I have seen like the Vibrant ultraquiets really diminish the exhaust note.

Thanks ! I didn't quiet the exhaust, actually it's still pretty loud but you have less "low frequency" (these one propagates further in air), so it's a bit quieter regarding "bass" sound lol

Your going at a completely different speed. Should compare freeway cruising speeds that drone is most annoying. City driving is OK. Freeway is the pain.

Actually it's not a matter of speed. It only depends on the RPM... And my resonator is calibrated around 3000RPM, but this cancels all the low RPM drone. The higher RPM drone is canceled by the mid-pipe resonator (concentric resonator). Freeway cruise is generally the worst because around 3000RPM, but I have absolutely no drone at these speeds I'll do another video soon, you'll see ;)
