You keep saying it has no power, and is not suitable for the highway. Both not true. I am a highly experienced rider, age 57, started on dirt bikes at age 8, been riding street bikes since age 16, have over 700,000 miles on about 45 different bikes. Right now I have a Goldwing 1500, a Kawasaki KLR650, and an '07 Rebel, with close to 80,000 miles on it, mostly highway. It is my third Rebel. I have close to 200,000 miles on Rebels. I have ridden them all over the U.S., Canada, and parts of Mexico. I have ridden to the tip of Baja many times. Even considered going to Alaska. I know the bike would have made it, I don't know about me. I noticed the freeway you were riding on had rain grooves, and if that Rebel had the stock ribbed front tire, that is what was causing the instability, not the wind. The Rebel will cruise at 70-75 mph GPS all day, day after day. My last one wore out at 83,000+ miles, much of it at full throttle. It began to destroy it's valves. I decided not to repair it, considering the mileage on it, sold it as a parts bike, and bought a new one. Now I'm about to buy my 4th Rebel while I can still get a new 2015 model. $3500 OTD. 2016 was the last year for the Rebel. Honda is replacing it with a hideous looking abomination they still call a Rebel. EFI and liquid cooled. I would never own an EFI bike. I love the Rebels single carburetor. You are supposed to let an engine warm up before taking off whether it is EFI or carb. My other 2 bikes are liquid cooled. I love the simplicity of the Rebel, and the fact that it actually looks like a motorcycle. No interest in sportbikes. Very painful riding position, and no place to carry anything.

As I mentioned to someone else: I had a blast riding the Rebel, but you're right, I have a bias toward the high torque and crazy acceleration of the FZ09 as that's all I've ridden the past three years. But the Rebel was a very nice change in pace. Glad you've enjoyed several of these bikes; that's a lot of riding! As far as the instability, good to know! That obviously never crossed my mind as a possibility. My FZ09 is EFI; I usually wait for it to get to 100 or so before I take off, and even then I ride it easy until it gets to operating temp. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Nice to see someone who can "sort of" understand the appeal of small bikes. I am 57, and have been riding on the street since age 16. I have owned more than 40 bikes, from liter class sport bikes (oh the pain) to Goldwings, to huge v-twin cruisers, and several dual sport bikes. I enjoyed them all, but the thrill of "speed" wears off quickly, you cannot use that speed on the street without losing your license, and the big heavy bikes were a real workout around town. The only place they really shine is on the open road. My favorite sport bike by far was a first generation Ninja. My favorite bike of all time (I've owned 2 new ones and put 230,000 miles on them) is the Kawasaki Vulcan 750. Cruiser comfort, great handling, plenty of power, and will keep up with freeway traffic all day at any speed without getting anywhere near redline. I have also owned a Honda Rebel, 2004 model. I set it up for touring, and put over 30,000 miles on it on the freeway at full throttle. I know one guy who put 80,000+ full throttle miles on a Rebel 250 before it began to eat it's valves. It's carburetion is way ahead of modern fuel injection, and can actually be worked on. There is a reason why the Rebel has been in production for so long, though I believe it has reached the end of it's life. Faced with putting EFI on it because of the EPA, which would raise it's price out of reach for most beginners, Honda will probably drop it. Fortunately there are so many Rebels out there that they will be available for beginners and those who appreciate small bikes for many years to come.

I'm 30 and just started riding and i bought a ninja 650 for the same reason. i do want a super sport badly and one day i will get one but it's true, where the fuck on the street am i gonna ever use that power.. even with 71 horsepower when people Tru to box me out (ny driving -.-) they don't stand a chance lol. even in 6th gear i give it a lil throttle and I'm ahead of them

I could only watch the first four or five minutes of this. While I appreciate you taking the time to do the review, you started off looking at this bike from the perspective of someone who doesn't appreciate or maybe understand the appeal and utility of small displacement bikes for anyone other than beginner riders. I plan on getting one for fuel savings in the summer and commuting back and forth to work.

This thing isn’t as underpowered as people make it out to be.. sure, its on the smaller end but mine still pulls harder than most cars ive owned. If you don’t expect it to be the fastest thing on the road, it’ll do just fine. Calling this a beginner bike is like calling a 4cyl a beginner car. Not everyone cares about sheer speed.
@rusack71748 жыл бұрын
I've been riding over 50 years, when I was a pre-teen it was minibikes and go-karts..until we discovered the small displacement motorcycles, mostly Hondas because of their very reliable 4-stroke engines. There were 50's, 55's, 60's, 70's, 75's, 80's, 90's, 100's, 110's, 125'c and so on up the displacement ranks. Many more engine choices than today. When watching your video I kept hearing your repeated statements that the Rebel had no power. While I know what you mean I thought it unfair to make comparisons to a much more powerful machine. It would be like comparing your FZ-09 to the many bikes that are more powerful than it. Power is one thing, and it is addictive, but it's not what these bikes are about. To a young, just getting started, rider each jump in displacement is exciting as rider skills evolve. I do agree that power isn't everything and to be able to just ride and take in all the sights and smells on a beautiful day is the beauty of motorcycling. Many observe that it's more fun to ride a small bike to its full extent (fast) than it is to ride a big bike slow. There is an awful lot to that.

I have a Rebel that I ride simply for the fuel efficiency. I have much much much bigger bikes that I ride when I need something with more power. Anyway, I've never had to wait for it to warm up.I just set the choke and take off. If it's super wet or super cold outside, I'll ride it with the choke for a few minutes. I set the choke off as soon as it'll run without it. Never once have I had to actually wait for it to warm up... My KZ750 and my "new" KZ1000 are a different story, however. The choke is under the gas tank on both of those bikes, which makes fiddling with the choke while it's moving a bit of a risky venture. I'm thinking about trying to rig up some hand controls for the choke like the Rebel has.

Once you actually have to work on a bike, you'll really appreciate the Rebel over all other bikes. It doesn't get everything right, but it gets *most* things right... where as other bikes get some things right, but *most* things wrong. Try to work on a Honda Rebel next to a Suzuki Intruder, and you'll see how right the Rebel is and who absolutely Wrong the Intruder is. The first, you can get to everything... the second, you can get to nothing (without taking the bike completely apart). 60-70mpg 17hp highway Swiss Watch vs. say a 150hp CrotchRocket with plastic fairing with an engine that is a turbine nightmare of tolerances to work on. You'll hug your Rebel as a minimalist piece of artwork and if you're smart, never part with it it as the bike that will get you through the Apocalypse and keep on running, that you can fix under a shade tree by the side of the road. People call it *the* beginner bike, because it gets everything right... I call it... *the* pony bike, that hits the sweet spont between 125cc (80mpg, underpowered) and 450cc (50mpg, too much power) just right. Parts are dirt cheap for them, and the thing is an air cooled marvel like a Volkswagen Bug.

So for a first time rider, I should get a bike like this? I always wanted a bike and this so far looks great for me but my issue is the gas tank and the rpm's. Any tips on that end?
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
+Elliott Ropell (Panther) Well, there's many opinions on what makes a good beginner bike. Some people (such as myself) started on a 500 and did just fine, but the Rebel is a fantastic bike for a first time rider. Don't be too worried about the range on a tank of gas on the Rebel; they get about 70 mpg. And unless you're on the freeway, the engine will run in the lower RPMs when just commuting.
@ElliottRopell8 жыл бұрын
Lefty Cycle My cousin has this bike and I was talking to him about it this morning and he said it's great. I've noticed though it doesn't have a gas gage or and rpm gage. Can I get mods to have those stuff?
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
Well, they do make gas gauges and tachs to be installed on bikes without them. However, I'm not so sure about how labor intensive it would be to add a tach, but I'm sure it's a lot. However, the Rebel is a bike that's easy to work on.

Thanks for the video. The front chrome behind the front wheel, is that standard or is that a mod/add-on? I'm short and am interested in this bike, and am thinking the front chrome may help in the case of an accidental drop (minimum damage on the tank/etc). Can you provide info?

Got to the 12 minute mark... I have never had stability issues with the Rebel on the interstate... but then, I also use a windshield. I do notice that it gets a little shakey at high RPMs. I'll shift up and the stability problem goes away. If you're going 70 in 4th gear, yeah you're going to get some stability problems. Look at the red lines around the edge of the numbers on the spedometer. You'll see at what speeds you're supposed to shift it at. Also I'm going to be installing a tachometer on my Rebel. It's the only bike I have that doesn't have one...
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
+Jenny Tokumei I was in 5th, but I could tell that it was the wind pushing me around a little bit. It was a rather windy day though. I've been riding for a while so I don't really use the tach to tell me when to shift, just use my ears :) Thanks for watching!
@BerryTheBnnuy8 жыл бұрын
Lefty Cycle Well that's less the Rebel's fault and more the fault of an upright seating posture. This is a problem that all cruisers and standards have. That's why I use a windshield. I'm rather tall so I had to drop an oversized windshield on it, a Streamliner Enterprise windshield... Anything smaller and my ears end up bleeding from the noise of turbulence inside the helmet.
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
+Jenny Tokumei I think it's a case of YMMV. My FZ09 sits very upright but is rock solid regardless of speed and has no windscreen. In my opinion, the wind hitting me was causing me to create input to the bars, which due to the Rebel's light weight, was causing a little instability. But, to each their own :)
@BerryTheBnnuy8 жыл бұрын
Lefty Cycle That's possible too, but even if so, I still use a windshield on it. I have the same windshield on my KZ750 and KZ1000 LTDs... Those bikes don't have the same issue as the Rebel without the windshield, but they also both have a greater caster angle, which I think is why they're smoother at high speeds than my rebel (and they get going much faster, and they get going that fast much faster too). That said I still have the windshield on them just to quiet down the wind in my helmet. I like to be able to hear myself think.

The CB300 is a good start if you want something upright like a cruiser and the performance of a sportier 250/300. To be honest, you can't go wrong on any entry level bike since you'll get a great learning experience regardless of the machine, plus you'll want to upgrade anyway. ;)

Lefty Cycle I actually started on a SSR 125 Pit bike. Ive rode it all around my town for the past 2 year or so, only took me 2 years to get the clutch down perfect without stalling lol. Im about to be moving into collage in the next year or two. (after high school im going to wait a year before collage, mostly to save some cash before hand.) and just wanted something to get to and from work/school. Also does this bike actually have 84mpg? Thats what the Honda Site says, but im not sure. And do you need to run 92+ gas? Thats what im running on my pit bike.

Also, thanks for the quick reply!

+Zipping Basher you bet! And that sounds about right, this thing just sips on gas. I just put in regular fuel, which around here is 87 octane. My FZ09 however gets the good stuff lol

@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
Well, the speedometer has recommended gears on it for each speed. Honestly, I don't use that whatsoever. I shift up and down by just listening to the revs of the engine.

How do you even ride a cruiser with the pegs all the way in front? How do you even weight the pegs in a turn?
@LeftyCycle20157 жыл бұрын
Brian LO it's simple really. You just put your feet on the pegs. Lol but seriously it has no effect on control. And unless you plan on riding it like it's an r6 there's no need to weight one peg over the other.

+Lefty Cycle No problem, man. Before I took CMSP I always thought I would never want to ride a cruiser but riding the Rebel showed me the charms of being on one. Right now, I'm currently riding a DRZ400SM but once I become too old to ride a tall bike, I can really see myself settling down on a cruiser. I thank the Rebel for teaching me that.

I work in a 2 mile radius , so this bike was perfect for the commute . I finished Riders Edge Course at Harley Davidson and ever since I been want to drive again . I had a mini that hit 50mph with suicide shifter. But I don't have no more . I don't want to get on the freeway. Was thinking about making it kind of like a low rider motorcycle since it doesn't have all that much power or talk or anything just make it a nice beautiful little shiny Rider Cruiser, flake paint job ,clean the spoke rims probably hydrodip my rims.

lol that ending, but yeah great review video. This bike gets around 84mpg if you ride it normally and about 75mpg if your hard on it, but that's perfect for me since my parents won't let me have a sports bike. They said no to the kawasaki ninja 250r, kawasaki ninja 300, honda cbr300r, honda cbr250r, suzuki gs500f and the cbr125 (yes they said no to a 125cc fml lol). But i think they are judging by looks and not the displacement since they saw a cruiser and thought they are slower. That's why i want this bike to build the confidence in my parents then move up to a cbr300r then the 600rr (when honda updates it in 2017)
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
+Taijean Moodie Thanks man! A lot of people who don't ride don't know that the power of a bike is independent of the look or displacement. The Suzuki GS500F was my first bike and I loved it. Make sure you show them that you have and will wear all your gear, and take a basic riders safety course to show them that you're learning to be as safe as possible on the road. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@LeftyCycle20156 жыл бұрын
It would depend on the year, condition, and your market, but generally you can find one in my neck of the woods for $1,500 to $2K. There's actually a shop in my area selling the Rebel's competitor, a Suzuki GZ250, for about $1,200 w/ 3k miles on it.

I've been riding about 45 years, have had 100 motorcycles, up to 1500cc,allways liked Hondas, i'm 59 now have a 40' diesel pusher motorhome and have a carrier on the rear, and I can easily load this thing, love the 75 MPG, so fun to ride, brings back memories of the 70's. I have a 2013 with 1200 miles, don't take it in the interstate, just around town and back roads, just cruise. I put on 5" extended forward controls from BLUE COLLAR BOBBERS,sissy bar, back rest & rack from ebay, 28 tooth rear sprocket for cruising.Drilled out a couple of baffels of exhaust with a 1 1/2" key hole saw, sounds mellow. So proud for you and Brie! With about three minutes left, you were talking about the reaction from the Harley Guys. Well, how would you relate this to an 883 Sporty. Because a lady that used to teach at my high school has a very ugly one of those and she is terrible at it. Hardly commits herself to the bike at all! So don't you think she'd've been better of with a bike like Brie's? I mean from this video-Brie obviously seems to get much more enjoyment out of this bike than that lady does hers. Just wondering.
@LeftyCycle20158 жыл бұрын
I've never been on an 883, but they seem to have the same seating position. Obviously the 883 has more engine. BUT, the Rebel is 200 lbs lighter which makes a HUGE difference in the way the two handle. The lighter and more forgiving Rebel would be a great choice for her. Thanks for watching!
@TheMKEWERBY8 жыл бұрын
Welcome! Yes, she said she took the MSF Course and that starting as she said from scratch, there was no way she could have ridden otherwise-was 43 before she was even on the back of a motorcycle. Also, these are basically what they use there. So I have no idea why she didn't go with it instead of that pile of garbage she now rides. This may have less weight & motor-but Brie's bike is, in my opinion much more of a bike than Heidi's could ever hope to be! Agree?

But the 250 is a GREAT bike to learn on and get comfortable.
