It actually does have a locking rear differential. The VTM system as Honda calls it is really solid. The only thing I can really gripe about is the direct injection they have issues on all the 3.5 engines with injectors. I don’t haul heavy equipment so the smooth ride is so much better than any pickup and what pickup gets 20mpg??✌🏽

Nice, honest owner review. I just bought a 2023 RTL-E last week. Super nice quiet ride and good interior space. Time will tell if it holds up but being retired I only drive about 6K miles per year so it should make it to 60K miles in about 10 years!

You have to be really picky in order to find things to complain about when it comes to the Ridgeline. I've had a 2017 now for almost 6 years. The damn thing is just solid! It absolutely is unmatched when it comes to the interior space and flexibility. On the snow and ice, it just kicks ass!

Great real owner review 👍 I’m on my second Ridgeline, I like them. The first was a 2017 RTL-T, Obsidian Blue, 20K miles. A distracted driver ran a stop 🛑 sign hit me driver side and spun me around head-on into a concrete wall. ALL airbags deployed, insurance totaled the truck 🛻. Gota say it took a good hit and I walked away bruised from the seatbelt tensioner and that’s it. I now have a 2022 RTL Lunar Silver Metallic. Not a fan of the push button shift or start stop. Thanks for sharing

I own a 2012 midgrade model and i really like it. I was looking for a used truck to buy and i saw it on my friend's lot. Silver with gray interior. I've had it for 6 months and it has done very well. People may make fun, but it comes in handy for hauling my animal feed and other supplies, plus it's comfortable to use on a long trip. Reliable and useful. I can't ask for more.

Honda has an extended service bulletin on the transmission, they just replaced the torque converter on my wife's 2017 Pilot. Well worth the trip to the dealer.

We have a 2023 Ridgeline. Absolutely love it, with Michelin ice tires it is unstoppable and SAFE in the snow and on ice. Only complaint is I wish it had 2 more inches of ground clearance…..

Probably because the prices of trucks are getting pretty ridiculous, and using an existing unibody frame line saves the company (A LOT) of money, and can offer the Ridgeline for less. Ford's doing this with the Maverick.

I agree with the ground clearance. Needs more. I have a 6 year old 2017. It's been a good truck. Low mileage so no big test of durability. Great on long trips plus good gas mileage. Starting to have an issue with low speed stuttering from the transmission when accelerating. Hopefully nothing serious. I would probably buy another one.

Thank you for your info I believe every truck can be upgraded and there's a lot of aftermarket things that can be done to anything what's really great about the Ridgeline is it does not handle and it's easy to work on Thanksgiving you for everything

Great review. One thing that no one seems to mention and was the deal breaker that made me reluctantly buy a Ridgeline was that it's the only truck in its class that fits my quad in the bed. I also tow a modified garden trailer for gear with a rack and Jon boat on top. Everything is stock except I installed a leveling kit and replaced the tires with the largest BFG's that would fit. I have been able to offroad on anything short of rock crawling. Drives like a magic carpet over even the most savage washboard. The long and short, the Ridgeline isn't going to stroke the ego when you're behind the wheel, so if that's what you need, just buy something else. But if you want something that fits in your garage and does everything else extremely well, then maybe consider.

One thing to note. The bed lights are placed where they are because they serve to light up the bed and the in bed trunk when open. Comes in handy if you use the trunk as much as I do.

I have a 2012 no frills and with 97000 miles on it. as far as the cargo lights I agree with you. I would miss the 45deg angle on my bed with the cargo lights mounted there. I haul stuff all the time. I have towed 3000 lb trailers and vehicles over the Rockies with no problem. It is a great little workhorse I Can't complain!

I have the 2020 RTL-E i have pulled a 6k trailer, no problems and the bed can handle 1500 lbs. Fits in my garage and have had 0 problems.

To answer your question about why Canadian models offer some additional features, I believe it starterd in particular in the early 2000's (and only with Japanese automakers as far I'm aware) when the Canadian dollar was at 90 to 102% of the US dollar, yet cars were still 20-30% more expensive. Before US dealers went off the rails with markups, those extra features helped to partially justify the price difference.

I was excited to hear about the 2024 Trailsport edition, only to learn they really didn't update it that much. I drove a 22 and really liked how it drove and handled, but the interior was barely a step above a 2011 Silverado. Overall it really is the best of both worlds, as long as you don't need to tow heavy.

2022 RTL-E Love it. Haven’t had to beg anyone for a dump run since. 20-26mpg. Love taking day trips with the wife, rides smooth, agile, and comfortable. My only complaint is the entertainment system. Metallic Blue with the Grey Interior. Doesn’t get hot. I get compliments all the time.

I have a 2017 Honda Pilot and experienced transmission issues until I did a transmission flush and the shifting issues went away. The tech at the dealership told me I should do a flush every 30,000 miles. There is also a service notice to update the software that controls the transmission fluid temperature. But since I no longer have the issue, I’ll pass on the software update for now.

I’m maybe in somewhat of a similar situation, as I know many others are as well. I used to live in a rural area, with a 4wd Tacoma, now live in more of a suburban area and basically needed an SUV for the small family, but also a wanted a bed. Ended up swapping out the older Tacoma (which I also really liked) for a Ridgeline. For the boxes I need checked now, nothing else really compares.

I have a 2021 RTL-E. I don't mind the bed lights but I have the factory tonneau cover so the trunk lid only opens partially. It's still accessible but it doesn't open enough for the bed light to get to the trunk. I got a battery powered light from Harbor Freight for the trunk so I can see inside at night. This is the first vehicle that I have bought that made me decide in advance to buy another one when I have to replace it.

I have a 2021 RTL. I bought it for the ride and the load rating. I have hauled more than 5 cords of firewood rounds, about a third of a cord at a time (I have plywood cut for the sides and to protect the rear window as the bed if too small to match 1500 pounds of oak). It is fine. I also have a small power cat (4000 pounds on the trailer). At interstate speeds, the control and ride are fine. It also gets pretty good gas milage towing. I would like another 2 inches of clearance...

We don’t get these where I’m from, hoping they do bring Ridgeline 2024. What is missing in our markets is exactly this vehicle. Having a truck, that one can pop shopping into the back unseen to the criminals which are full up where I live. Place for people, yet seats lift to pop something in the back. Saturday mornings, DIY or small transport goods, it seems to cover that aspect too. Naturally aspirated 3.5. To me, it’s an unbelievable dream. I love it.

Mine is an AWD. Just because of the snow alone, we require a 4wd or AWD vehicle. The RL has handled snow better than the previous 4WD trucks I've had in the past.

I like mine overall but the torque converter and transmission failed just shy of 80,000 miles and was replaced under warranty. An internet search will show many examples of this in the 6 speeds from '17 to '19

Thanks for the report! I have an SUV and I just want to get something with a bed to carry stinky stuff, like an inflatable boat with an outboard motor and a can of Gas. But I don't want a big Pickup Truck as it won't fit in many places with an underground garage. I've also been looking at the Maveric as there's a Long Waiting List from so many people asking for it.

You have an older 2nd Generation Ridgeline. So some things were updated with refresh in 2020 this would be the tailgat lock is Electronic not key. It is tied into the Doorlocks key fob. The Bed lights were moved from Gen 1 on the Gen2 because of in-bed trunk needs light. If you swing open Dual Action Tailgate you can step in center of bumper to get up into bed also use Tailgate as a handle to help you get up and down. So some features have refreshed in the model you have in 2020. Then, another refresh was done on the 2024 model. Not sure if it still has in-bed audio system only available on Black Edition and The RTL-E trim. The RTL-E trim was removed for 2024 and added a TrailSport trim.

Good & fair review. I have a 23 black edition & it fits my needs, but I do have a few complaints. Mainly the push button transmission, I'm not a fan. The info screen is another one, it's clunky at best. Those things being said, it's one of the best vehicles I've ever owned & I'm 61 now, so I've owned more than a few vehicles. I've owned better off-road trucks, but I don't off-road or tow anything anymore. I've owned faster & more powerful vehicles... But, as I stated, I'm 61, I don't need the "macho machine" as some sort of status symbol or for doing things that I just don't do anymore and rarely did anyway. At the end of the day, at the price point, it boils down to what you need & or want. If the Ridgeline isn't your cup of tea, or doesn't meet your needs, definitely get something else. But, if you're shopping for a great all around vehicle with a decent size bed & a very comfortable ride and a ton of features including safety and storage and all wheel drive, great reliability, quality & customer service? I would highly recommend the Ridgeline. Cheers!

I have a 2020 Sport model. Love it. The bed side lights illuminate the trunk when it’s open. I find that more useful. The Honda I-VTM4 AWD system is better than any competing system unless you’re rock-crawling. Btw, if it has a bed and a hitch, it’s a truck, full stop.

The Ridgeline is at 5,000 lbs, so yeah it would be unsafe to do that, and if you are towing more than 7,000 lbs, you are going to find many trucks in this class are at the limit and you exclude one of the most dependable trucks like the Tacoma. You absolutely have Apple Carplay -- "Smartphone Connection" is your CarPlay, you just have to connect it via USB cable. :) Hope you see this and test that out!

I have a 2018 ridgeline with same transmission message on display at 60k miles code was p0741 which is the torque converter lock up sticking it’s very important to replace transmission fluid every 30k miles on the six speed which is not indicated on the maintenance minder Honda tried back to back fluid changes which did not work and then replaced the torque converter under my extended warranty other than that issue the truck has been great It rides like a car tows my Atv’s 30 bags of mulch in bed what’s not to like I would definitely buy another one

@@antonslutskiy8039 no flushing required just drain and fill only things required is 4 quarts OEM HONDA FLUID and a new drain plug gasket also you’ll need a long neck ( transmission) funnel to access fill on top of transmission, save $300 off dealer price for 1/2 hour service congrats on new truck I love mine

I’m on my 2nd ridgeline You cannot beat these vehicles. They are absolutely flawless when it comes to comfort, power, all wheel drive that is superior to any other AWD/4WD when going up steep gravel roads. Great acceleration. The only minor things it can’t do: get more than 24 MPG (I average about 20). And it also can’t tow with Torque - if you need to move a large tree off the road it probably won’t. But it can still tow 5000 lbs and handle a 2,000 lb pallet in the truck bed. Normally I always want new cars or trucks just to change it up. I get bored. But this is the last vehicle I will ever buy.

The switch in the glove box should lock the trunk. The 2017-2019 did not have an electronic factory tailgate lock. I think the refresh was 2020 and they added the factory tailgat lock to all Ridgelines. But I've seen this question on Ridgeline Owners Club Forum before. Being a member soon to be 17yrs next month. We have Gen 1 Ridgeline in family. But the current Gen 2 has been on my radar as next vehicle for .myself to get. But they didn't do a complete redesign based on 4th Gen Pilot. So I myself will not be getting new 2024 Ridgeline Pickup. We will try keeping the 2007 Ridgeline running with 230,00+ miles. I will soon next month be buying myself 2024 Pilot Elite

On the 2023 model it locks the tailgate along with the trunk... try yours if you have the switch. I thought it only locked the trunk but found out the hard way that it locked the tailgate also.

I love my Ridgeline. It's in a class all by itself. I don't call it a truck. I call it a Ridgeline. I don't tow, off road, or drive in the country. I'm in the city and always by myself. If I need a truck, I drive m F250. That is if I can get it away from my son. Other than that, I absolutely love my daily driver.

@chadhaire1711 clearly you resort to insults instead of reading comprehension. I know it's AWD, but it's based on FWD architecture. Meaning, the majority of the driven power is Front biased. I'm saying if it was based on RWD architecture, most of the driven power is going to the rear wheels, which makes for better performance with towing and drive dynamics.

The Ridgeline starts off mechanically as FWD with an AWD system tacked on. That's why the engine and trans are transverse mounted. I'm saying Honda should start with this vehicle as a RWD based vehicle from the jump then add AWD to the front wheels when needed. For towing use, a RWD based AWD system is usually superior performance. Theres a reason why the Explorer switched back to RWD architecture solely for better towing

@@marcm8473 No Goober I am not having a hard time.....I test factory cars for a living and been doing it for 34 years....Ford Explorer had stronger engines, bigger tow ratings, and since they sold over 300,000 per year they could afford to make changes for different drivers. Honda Ridgeline sells about 65,000 per year, and the typical buyer has a set use and I assure you NOBODY driving one cares about ANY of what you are complaining about. Going from FWD to AWD only solved any gripes owners had...it needs no changes.

I think there’s a common misconception on tires for snow and ice. Grab All-Weather tires, not All-Terrain tires. All-Weather tires are severe snow and usually mud rated as well. They are better than All-Season tires in most ways.

Yeah, but its never been a problem for me when loading. I use a net if i need to keep cargo strapped in. If anything, it makes getting things in and out of the bed so much easier without having to climb in.

You also have that deep in-bed lockable watertight trunk underneath that bed. So the shallow bed cuts into cargo carrying capability. However the wider bed lay-flat bed to lay 4×8 sheets of plywood flat. The Ridgeline has flat wheel well humps in its bed.

I see the shallow bed as a plus. It sucks climbing into a tall truck with a deep bed. Especially if you work a lot with it.

I have a 2021 Ridgeline and haul my 10ft Pelican sit in kayak just fine. I leave the tailgate up and position the kayak diagonally in the bed. Strap it down and it's good to go. Hope this helps.

I get 23-26 mpg in all driving conditions. Original Owner of a 2023 with 22k.

Thats a torque converter issue man. You have pictures of that thrn take it to thr dealer, they extended warranty to 150k miles. Just had mine done.

I'm actually quite surprised at the one flaw that nobody ever mentions about the trunk. If you have a load in your vehicle that's blocking the trunk, you can't get to it... And if you get a flat with said load, you can't get to your spare tire without removing the load. Now, do I think this is a reason to not buy this truck? No, of course not. But it's something to be mindful of when your putting in heavier than normal loads and going longer distances.

There's a lot you didn't cover. Another consideration is that Honda's have timing belts instead of timing chains. What that means is that you have to replace the timing belt at considerable expense every 100K miles. With a timing chain vehicle, if you change the oil a lot, the timing chain can last 400,000 miles. (Life of the car). I also don't like how Honda uses adjustable valves. Every 120K miles, you have to have the valves adjusted which is a job that only very experienced and trained mechanics can do so can cost a lot or be hard to find. I also don't agree with you that a unibody vehicle is not a deal breaker. It is to some people if they plan to keep the car a long time and want the vehicle to be repairable if it were to get in an accident. Tacomas, Tundras, and other vehicles with true body on frames last a lot longer and are more likely to be repairable should they get in an accident because a body on frame vehicle is much stronger and does not get bent beyond repair like a unibody vehicle.

Your transmission is on the verge of failure; mine crapped-out at 44k. If I understand correctly, there's a fault in the torque-converter/clutch-assembly and/or the materials. The notifications I got at failure were 1. Blind spot 2. Emissions system 3. Transmission. Mine would not go into 6th gear... 2019 RTL-E. Honda issued an extended warranty bulletin in Sept. for these 6-speeds... so the cumulative warranty is 8 yr./150,000 mi. You're at 88k, so you're good. Go ahead and have it replaced, it costs nothing... it should cost nothing. If they try to sell you that dumb drain-triple-flush-fill service for about $900.00, they're full of crap... those notifications won't pop-up until the transmission's nigh kaput. Dealerships hate warranty work... they get reimbursed from the manufacturer, but they lose a lot of man-hours on quickie oil-changes, tire-rotations, and the other 'points-inspection' stuff for which they grossly overcharge. I don't know whether they put in a new transmission, or a 'reconditioned' one... you never know with warranty-work. As you probably know, there's a fuel-pump recall in this thing... ok... whoop-dee-do... I think there's been a fuel-pump recall on every vehicle I had LolZ. But, what's more concerning is the engine recall for the piston-rod bearings, which 'may be' defective. I'm sorry, but you can't tell me that these underpaid dealership techs are going to be ripping these engines apart, and replace piston-rod bearings... 'Good news! You're engine looks fine!' If they replace the transmission, it's probably the same faulty assembly as the one prior, with a warranty remaining of 2-3 years... I doubt you'll drive it to 150k mi. I'm going to be quite frank, and I hate to say it, but these 2nd gen. pickups are over-engineered on the cheap... that bumper issue you pointed-out was a good example; you still see the 1st gens. tootin-around all over the place, I think they were a better build quality. Plus, I think most of those were 2WD/4WD, no AWD... why bother with AWD in a pickup with a wheel-base that short. I'd suggest once you have that transmission-work done, unload it... that's what I'm going to do. Upgrade to a newer model? I wouldn't, I don't think the ZF 9ATs will fare much better... plus whatever else flew under the radar. I guess maybe the info-tainment was improved, from Windows '98 to XP... Zzzz. These are not the Hondas our parents drove. Once I get mine from the garage next Wed. I'm going to trade it in on a 2nd gen. Tundra, like around 2019-2022, which I had, and traded for the Honda... a collosal mistake on my part. Oh, btw, did your RL have those dumb back-doors which didn't open all the way? I had to get some front-door checkers, and put them in the back... dumb. Oh, I bet you did to get that bike in there lol.

@@elguapo8751 Yeah, keep that Tundra; we bought the RL because it rode and handled exceptionally, we do a lot of cross-country traveling. It also had some better security features, like that walkaway-auto-lock (out west, tweakers/punks walk up and down the street daily flipping door-handles for unlocked vehicles, you forget to lock your car 1 day out of 365, everything's gone)... but it worked erratically. There were just all sorts of goofy issues and quirks with this pick-up such that it just felt, quite frankly, embarrassing to keep it... it's like I time-warped back to the eighties.
