My first bike down here in Australia was a similar sort of bike, but made by Suzuki... a GSXR-400. Near identical performance, equally light. I believe 400cc is an insurance threshold in Japan? There seem to be some great 400cc sportsbikes from Japan down through the years.

These bikes can be faster than some litre bikes in some short circuit race tracks. KZbin has plenty of videos showing that. You can see VFRs400 and RVFs 400 pursuing 600s and 750s no problem (except straights) , at tracks like Donington Park in UK.

@SDSSMotoChannel You my friend have totally missed the point.. New bikes r faster, lighter, more nimble n can turn insane track times.. All those electronic riding aids provide an insane safety net and makes new riders look like pros.. Riding an owning these beasts make you appreciate what technology has done to keep you safe.. Not just that, it also is a way for enthusiasts to get the chance to own the machine they desired to own growing up but didn't have the means to.. You have the right to your opinion but you should also know why some of these older bikes trade for astronomical amounts whereas the new generation ones constantly depreciate.. Just a word from one biker to another.. No beef intended 🤘🏼

@SDSSMotoChannel You're completely missing the point...It not about how well it performs, or having the best....its about how it makes you FEEL. There's a lot more to riding a motorcycle than just going fast.

I bought my first V4 Honda (VFR400R NC21) when it was near new in 1988. Now 30+ years (and many bikes) later I find myself back on a VFR400R (NC30). Its more than enough bike for most people and being a Honda from the 80-90 it'll last forever.

Awesome bikes. Late 80s, 90s and early 2000s were in my opinion the golden years of sports bikes, there was everything from little 50 cc (like Aprilia RS50, Cagiva Mito 50, Yamaha TZR50, etc.) to over 1000 cc (Suzuki GSXR1100, Honda Blackbird, Kawasaki ZX12R, Suzuki Hayabusa, etc.),everything from two strokes, to small displacement four cylinders, to big displacement four cylinders, to V-twins. It's cool to see Kawasaki returning small displacement four cylinders with ZX25R,hopefully there's a chance we'll see the return of two strokes too.

Good for you! I already tried the RVF400 and the 750 quite some time ago, and that is the time I understood why they are valued HIGH. You can race it with your liter buddies and overtake them dudes, yet just cruise on a holiday, seaside at sunset and feel the old school vibe...great times...I wish I can go back to that time where it was all simple! But...I can never get one, unless I would be brave and import one from Japan myself, which is doable enough in my place.

In 1986 a friend bought a 1985 RVG 500 out of CANADA. I was 5'3 98lb and I wanted it!!! In 1990 went to CANADA to buy an 86,but it was trashed. Rode a RFV400 and loved it! It was like a baby RC30!! Came home with a 1989 YZR 500 and got my racing license at Road America. Never went back for it. When KAWI announced the new 400 I hoped it was like the mid/late 90s inline ZX-4 ... NOT a parallel twin like the new CBR250RR ended up. Oh well.... The sound/ feeling new and electric bikes are missing is called "mechanical". If ya think she sounds great.. try to find a RC45 !!!! AWSOM bike!! Stay safe!

There is a slightly more accesible version of that bike, its the older NC30. The NC30 has a tall first gear and was before further power restrictions that the NC35 got. That one probably has HRC power mods to be making that kind of power. The NC30 doesn't have the air ducts like that, but it looks pretty similar otherwise, definitely sounds similar.

I had one for 2 years, one of the best bikes I owned, suited me with short legs. Had a short big bore Japanese muffler on it. Sounds so great. Played around with fork dampening but the front springs just too soft, I was only 80 kg at the time. Hard braking had it bottom out on rough surfaces. For a Honda it had sole. Brakes were the same as a CBR900RR from the 90s.

The 5th Generation VFR800 (1998 - 2001) is the "accessible" Honda V4 that has pretty close to the same features as the RVF400: It has the V4, it has the gear-driven camshafts, it has the single-sided swingarm. Where I believe the 5th Generation VFR800 beats the RVF400: the 5th Gen's V4 has a 180 degree crankshaft (instead of the 360 degree crank in the RVF) which gives the exhaust a nice burble (sounds like a little Ferrari), the 5th Gen has Honda PGM Fuel Injection (instead of carbs like the RVF), and because it has 781cc of displacement the 5th Gen has more torque. Yeah, the 5th Gen isn't as rare and exotic as the RVF, but I think that's also an advantage because you don't feel like you have to preserve/protect the bike, you can just ride.
@rbfclaboratoryandstudio

VFR800 is nowhere near as sexy. It’s not a race bike. It’s a dad’s bike. Silly comparison. 360 big bang firing order was intended for serious race track use with a functional benefit in terms of race lap times. Stack it against the RC45 not the 400 if you want to understand the value differences between the two bikes.

i had one of these on my learners, they were restricted from factory (top speed). All you have to do is open up the speedo and there is a conductive plate that you need to cut off. Behind the speedo needle there is another on the back side of the speedo that follows the actual speedo needle and when it makes contact with a conductive plate (around 180kmh) it cuts the power. When you remove the pin on the backside you can keep winding out the bike past 220kmh

For those who wondering, "why the v4 sounds different from aprilia v4". Because this v4 uses 180° flat plane and screamer firing order, so that's why the engine really do sounds screaming. Not deep rumbling sounds from v4 crossplane big bang firing order.

I rode one back in 2004. Was really fantastic, torquey and handled well also. I owned the RGV back in 2003 as well. Asia had all the small bike coolness. Try a CBR250RR or the like ( 19k redline!!!) The power is not much but the sound is nuts. :)

Had a '75 CB400F. The bike you road weighs just about the same but has more than 2x the rear wheel HP. Must have been fun. Sounded awesome.

David , that would be "bike you rode", and CB400F's are slow. But they are worth serious money.

I have had one for a year or so, and needed something to play with after a long time riding the V-max.. This thing is made beautifully and without the limiter goes 210 km/h..so what do you need more? cornering feels very good and invites for max.lean too! braking hard is easy and ..yes a real fun to ride. mine was lost after.. 'I did not see you' ..but if you have one, you wont let it go and enjoy the craftsmanship till up the finer details every time its in the sun!

I miss my VFR400 ... a mate of mine rode it and his response "I dont understand why anyone would want to ride a bike like this" English sense of humour :-)

I'd love a modern 400/4. Wish honda would do it again. swear it sounds like a 2stroke at times very nice engine.
