The power and everything about the 800 Interceptor is exactly, the sweet spot I was looking for. If I wanted "more power" I would have found another bike. One test drive and I knew I had to buy it. This, coming from a previous liter bike owner btw. It appears that some "reviewers" must always harp about more-power etc for proof of being "core". At least manufacturers are aware that not all riders are wanting H2s or Busas. I wish I would've discovered/ridden a VFR 800 years ago. I've only had mine about 14 months now. I encourage anyone interested to test ride one (new riders and experienced riders).

TWDrive, I can agree with some of what you might have heard. Although, I have not had to deal a lot of 'heavy' maintenance (engine disassembly). I changed the coolant to be the correct fluid after the previous or two owners ago used green coolant. Blue is the proper color of Honda coolant/antifreeze. Same used in their newer cars. Removing the rear wheel is easy (single-sided swing arm), front wheel is easy to remove from the front forks, too. Air filter was easy to get to. The problematic R/R (regulator/rectifier) is a weak spot. I have not had to replace it yet. The previous owner (or before him) had installed a desktop computer fan on the R/R to keep it cool and that is a common mod. I have had to change the oil numerous times. The VFR (especially the 8th gen 2014 and 2015 models) have an INSANE amount of emissions limiters. This one I can tell has the flapper, snorkel, and vacuum still installed. The O2 sensor also forces it to run very lean. It’s designed to lower the fuel ratio until you enter very high in the rev-range, forcing the bike to be lean until you enter what’s effectively a “cruise-mode.” Hence the loud sound but muted power. Along with that, the air-box has two small inlet ports. One has a massive snorkel to cut inlet size by 70% but is permanently open, and the other side is vacuum actuated to shut closed once it gets halfway through the RPM’s, killing your air mixture in half. All of it had to be done so Honda could legally import the VFR and then pass initial emissions for sale because it has the VTEC system. Words cannot describe how phenomenal the bike is when you take those limiters away. It has immediate throttle response and genuinely feels as fast if not faster than it sounds. I wish the one chase rode had those things done to it so you can understand why this bike is truly one of a kind, but I can attest to everything he said being true until you do those changes. Although nothing will ever top the sound of the valve-extended V4 roaring in a tunnel.

Two cylinders? For a motorcycle guy your lack of knowledge is shocking at times. And you stated the "it runs on 2 cylinders" thing like it was fact. I do enjoy your videos but damn it's a bummer when you get something so wrong. You said you did some research on the Interceptor before the ride. Maybe a quick read of VTEC on WikiPedia should have been part of that. Honda still produces this bike in Japan. We just don't get it here in the states. The bike sold so poorly here in 2014 and 2015 that there were a ton of leftovers. About 2 years ago there were dealers here in the Northeast selling brand new, leftover 2014/15's for half price. A dealer not far from me had 7 in stock asking $6,500. The magazine reviews (remember those) in '14 said they didn't have any personality. That seems to be why they didn't sell well here. That also kept me from buying one, even at half price.

@afidarkside3 жыл бұрын
To answer your question "whats the reason for all the fancy vtec stuff?" Remember that honda has always had its hand in practicality. Vtec allows the engines to be economical on the low end and provide lower emissions. So since this was advertised as a sports tourer/commuter bike, the majority of your riding would be theoretically spent below 7k rpm. The benefit was increased MPG, but when you wanted to whack the throttle open and have some fun, you have it on tap.
@A--lex3 жыл бұрын
Just a small correction Vtec has nothing to do with cylinders it is variable valve timing and lift so at high rpm it changes to a bigger camshaft so that the valves open more and inject more fuel to the engine to make more power likewise in low rpms it changes to a smaller camshaft so that it uses less fuel. Essentially it gives you more power when you want it and it doesn't when you don't.

Honda did offer a 'deluxe' version with Traction control and ABS. Also the exhaust on that bike is not stock, looks like a delkavic slip on, it's much smaller than the stock tip. The ride on it is very comfortable and gives plenty of get up and go when needed. Honda also offered a speed shifter, however the top speed of this model is electronically limited To about 138mph.
@danrea8188 Жыл бұрын
When the rider discusses the bikes weight what I think he's really getting at is the amount of rake on the front fork. For what might be considered a sport bike (or Gentleman's Sport bike as some call the VFR) the VFR has a lot of rake which makes the bike less flickable than a true Sport bike like an R1 or R6. But more rake makes the bike more stable at speed and less likely to get into speed wobbles (aka tank slapper). Hence the moniker "Interceptor" which one would find in reference to an aircraft designed to intercept other planes and not to dogfight. My $.02.
@C1Rob19903 жыл бұрын
Man finally you try a Vfr. I loved my 750 rc36II. I'm really surprised by your weird/wrong explanation of the VTec system though 😅 the Vfr bikes have always been a v4 engine and will always be a v4 engine. Its literally in the name. The bike always runs on 4 cilinders... The VTec system is in the valve train and adjusts the camshafts. Below the VTec range it opens up 2 valves per cylinder. Above the VTec range it opens up al 4 of the valves per cylinder. The awesome characteristic of a v4 engine is the low end torque similar to the torque seen in v twins and the higher rpm limit often seen in a i4 engine. The best part is still the sound it makes, and on the 750s the camshafts where driven with gears making those extra sweet straight gear noises. It didnt have vtec so it just had the great sound all the time haha

So which is better
@paulcrocker45533 жыл бұрын
The older 750s and 800s with gear driven, non vtec engines were regarded as over engineered and rock solid, as the engine was basically a version of the racing engine. The owners of the older ones say the non vtec versions are better, as the vtec kicked in at 6100 on the older vtec engines, and from what I have read, people were not a fan of the engagement, so the rpm was changed, and how much of a punch was toned down. I like the older gear driven vfrs

The perceptions of torque are pretty interesting. The VFR has ~42-44lbft below 6500rpm (where there is a dip) and then peaks at 54lbft at 8500. An MT-07 from a similar year peaks at about 48lbft at 6500rpm, it just kicks up from idle to 45lbft lower in the range than the VFR, then meanders about. I suspect therefore that the MT-07 feels more torquey because it's 1) lighter and 2) has an initial bump of torque that then tails off and picks up gradually again, vs the VFR being very steady, then a dip, then a gradual build to higher overall torque.
@motomime61483 жыл бұрын
Torque means nothing. All it’s telling you is how much horsepower you have at a given rpm, except you have to do the math to find out. As far as “feeling” the power, gearing has a massive effect.

I can imagine that VTEC also gives better fuel mileage when cruising below 6k rpm?
@dariolinder45083 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, BTW he got the VTEC COMPLETELY wrong. It always runs on all 4 cylinders, it just runs on 2 valves below 7k and 4 valves above. That means less air drawn in and less fuel burnt. But with VTEC on this thing chugs like a 1000cc bike.

Great videos, but you gotta do some basic research on these bikes. There's no cylinder deactivation.
@xrstofstreepify3 жыл бұрын
you need to do a little more research before posting. vtec only changes the lobes on the cams which changes the valve timing. allowing more air intake at higher RPM. Switching off 2 cylinders......oh boy.. C

The Viffer is a great all purpose bike; plenty of torque getting around people (moreso in the 5th gens), lots of fun in turns, a classic timeless look, & a unique sound that makes it better sounding than most bikes on the road. You should test a 5th gen next time- you'll prob like it better

I have the 5th gen . 106000 km on it . still love it.

If Honda came with a new VFR1000 with 140-150HP and massive mid-range torque, I'd be the first ordering one.

Great vid~ I had a yellow 2000 VFR that died of old age last year~ I hear that Honda is going to come out with a newer version with 900-1000cc's. We'll have to wait for that.

Chase, a "first" ride is not enough to appreciate this bike. In the twisties is where this bike REALLY comes alive. it is a true sleeper. Take it to the twisties and THEN tell me what you think.

Its variable valves its always on all 4 only the valves shift into a more "sporty" setting on the cam lobes the new bmw r 1250 gs and rt have that feature now

And here’s what you should have said. Honda introduced this bike in 1983 as the Interceptor with a 748cc 90° V4 engine. In 1998 it took on a sport touring style, got a bump up to 784cc and in 2002 came chain driven cams and Vtec. Changes from here on were mostly about styling and trying to smooth out Vtec. Vtec is where only 2 valves per cylinder are active at lower RPMs with all 4 valves being active in the top part of rev range. This creates a little more low end torque and a little more top end HP. Dropped from sale in the US in 2009. Brought back in 2014 with production cancelled in 2021. It was just too expensive, heavy, underpowered and outperformed by the competition to remain viable. They turned into vanilla ice cream. Vanilla is still good, it’s just vanilla.

The vfr has a cult following for a reason. The older ones with gear driven cams are highly sought after. I'm currently after an 86 750 1st gen, or a vfr 400 😁
@themessicomedian3 жыл бұрын
Dont go for the first gen VFR, They added the gear driven cams with the 1990 VFR750 RC36 till the 2000 or 2001 model

@@themessicomedian yeah I just like the retro style of the first gen. And the 400 is insanely hard to find

@charlie08013 жыл бұрын
vtec only kicks on if certain parameters are met (throttle and rpm) and it's not about chaging the number of cylinders or valves actuating. its about the cam profile. in vtec, valve opening is taller and longer, which is why the tone changes so much
@ronsmith92512 жыл бұрын
Engine note just isn’t the same without the gear driven cams of the earlier bikes.

Vtec is simply the intake valves staying open longer.. because of the larger lobe on the cam... runs in all four cylinders all the time

OC: I think they should have made more updates to it to keep it relevant (especially the dash). Its like they did half the refresh job and then just decided to copy the 6th gen for the rest of it. If they were going to keep anything from the 6th gen it should have been the undertail exhaust, as it didn't overheat the rider. I'm guessing emissions forced the change though.
@gregoryz3 Жыл бұрын
The unique ones are the gen 6, undertail exhaust and quad lights gets all the oooh's and ahhh's. Love my '06. Its not about power, its the total package.

If honda made a liter v4 and vtec for the fireblade arrrrrrrrr it would be one of the iconic sounding sports bike beside r1 and panigale. Every 4 cylinder sportbike sounds the same with flatplane four which is kinda typical and boring.

OC: I'm usually at a crossroad because I like new bikes aesthetically and mechanically but low tech such as LCD or analog displays for cost reduction and simplicity. Sure TFT screens and dozens of rider settings are nice but I've experienced them and don't particularly care for it.
@zThisPlay3 жыл бұрын
actually doesnt vtech chage cam profile?
@FXSTB3 жыл бұрын
It utilizes secondary cam lobes, in order to affect the operation of the valves. In most Honda cars, it changes lift and duration but it sounds like the bike also changes from a 2 valve per cylinder to a 4 valve per cylinder when the switch occurs. As many noted, this should offer more fuel economy when sport touring the machine but gives you full grunt when really asking for it. That said, I've owned many VTEC Honda cars but I prefer my VFRs a bit more carbureted and pre-VTEC. That's just me.
