After 2 years and 8k mi, I sold it to my dad and grabbed a 2013 Accord. Dad still has it and at 205k mi it's still going strong, and for pushing 20 it still looks great. I am hoping to grab a newer used model. The newer ones aren't as monstrous as the older ones and I feel I would use it more if it's not so intimidating to drive.
@summushieremiasclarkson47006 ай бұрын
I agree with Honda on the decision to stick with timing belts in the American market especially, where people just don't do maintenance. The main things that fail on most engines are: Timing components, cooling systems (especially the water pump) and tensioners/pulleys. Forcing this into the maintenance schedule makes these cars a lot more reliable. Take BMWs for instance, if they had timing belts then BMW -ricers- customers would be forced to replace all of these, which are the most common failure points on drivetrains anyway. But then you'd have reliable BMWs, and that would be ridiculous. This is besides other advantages, including not having to worry about guide lubrication and wear, chain stretching, excessive chain noise and so on. Honda V6s are extremely smooth and refined for this exact reason.
@SnipesXxX6 ай бұрын
Timing chains are superior in every way. They last the life of the engine(200k+ miles with proper oil changes) unless there is a defect in the components. Most people are not going to change that timing belt when it's supposed to be, because it costs hundreds to replace if you don't do it yourself. I avoid any car that has a timing belt.
@mrdave7776 ай бұрын
Would the original comment elaborate more on the BMW comment? Thx
@summushieremiasclarkson47006 ай бұрын
@@mrdave777 OK, in the case of most BMWs, the drivetrains are actually pretty solid. But Brad thinks his "ultimate driving machine" needs no maintenance, and BMW is happy to support his delusions, with absolutely ludicrous extended service intervals (18000 mi oil changes wtf). Typical failure points on most BMWs include the cooling system, lubrication gaskets and seals. My E60 545i for example, is famous for valve stem seals failing, along with other gaskets, not to mention thermostat and water pump. But it uses a timing chain, so no one bothers to fix these before they blow up. Maintain it like a toyota, and sure it'll be more expensive to maintain, but it'll last a heck of a long time, more than most people keep their cars. Also, avoid, avoid avoid Turbo BMWs that are not inline 6 engines, and even then do your research. The current crop of B58 engines seem to be rock solid, for instance.
@summushieremiasclarkson47006 ай бұрын
@@SnipesXxX Read my comment more carefully. I never said timing chains aren't superior, but belts are cheap and easy to replace, and are a lot quieter and smoother. Most importantly, when you replace the belt, it makes it very easy to do all associated failure points on an engine except maybe valve adjustments (in the case of Honda engines). Not to mention, people have a belief that chains are lifetime. Yes, but the plastic guides are absolutely not. Usually they don't fail outright, but you will notice worse fuel economy due to loosening timing over the life of the vehicle.

Say what you want about timing belts, but they are cheaper to change than a timing chain set: You have the timing chain, guides, tensioners, cam sprocket and cam phasers that all need to be changed if a timing chain gets stretched. Just ask anyone with a Honda Earthdreams 2.4L that has the cold start timing chain death rattle. Happened to my Accord with only 83K well maintained miles on it.
@LoveLikeaHurricane3 ай бұрын
Depends on the engine and oil I suppose . On my s2000 no issues timing chain related. But the car has been known to have timing chain tensioner issues. However there is a hypothesis that it has to do with oil quality as the owners who use regular Mobil 1 seems to have the most issues. I use Amsoil and no issues. So with timing belt you do have to change about every 7 years regardless of miles just for safety. That’s about 1000-1200$ every 7 years. How much is a timing chain job?

But put it in sport none of those issues and the car drives at about 800 more rpm when in sport. In green mode if im doing 15mph that car is under 1000rpm. Thats just too low. It's too late to stop people from calling "CUVs" "SUVs" isn't it, Scotty? You, of all people, know the difference. Thanks.
@sxb0805116 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video, fun to drive SUV for sure. One thing might be an issue is the radar behind the grill letter A in front, if it gets ice or snow on it (like other Hondas) would flag all kinds of error msgs.

3:40 Made in USA, heavy, poor MPG, Type Slow. Nice buy after 3-5 years of epic depreciation. 7:00 Timing belt lol. 9:05 Palisade a better buy.

The only problem is the MDX is made in the US in the same factory where they make the Cadillacs which are assembled by the UAW(No thank you). The other problem is Honda still uses timing belts which need require replacement every 80K miles and it is expensive and often the current generation of dealer “mechanics” don’t do the job properly and don’t replace all the parts and bolts at least here in Riverside, California.

I’ve driven the 2023 mdx. I had never driven an Acura before. It was a great ride. The suv can move.

I have a 2020 MDX. 45k miles so far. My only problem is Apple Car Play acts up from time to time. Infotainment is slow to react. No other problems. It was suppose to be a least and return, but the maintenance on it is so cheap; I decided to keep it. Well at least compared to my MBZ is cheap. It also should last to at least 200k miles.

Still using a Timing BELT? Arg! I have a 2005 Acura TL with a Belt.. but it idles smooth at 135k miles. Only had 1 electronic issue. 1 ignition coil went bad. I replaced it myself in just a few minutes with no special tools. Plentiful engine access goes a long way. I heard the new CIVIC's have timing CHAIN's. Why is Acura still using Belts?? It takes away from the "reliable, maintenance free" aspect to these great running engines. I mean what's the difference between a great running Honda engine that needs a timing belt at 100kmiles and a GM engine that has lots of electrical issues but a nice timing CHAIN??? If your goal is to stay out of the repair shop then they begin to look similar. Still, I would take the Honda engine over the GM..But having a BELT tends to gray the line between a great running engine and one that needs more repairs. And I think Honda may be using belts to save money

I have a 2012 advanced technology MDX. I love the thing although that was the year they had the class action lawsuit for all the oil leaks in the piston rings With the quality of Honda going downhill I wonder if these will have the same issues that the rest of the fleet is having

MDX is Acura’s bread and butter and it’s one of the best sellers. I would prefer the Infiniti QX60 because it’s more luxurious, but the Acura is good value.

I work on Honda - I was very happy they put a double wishbone suspension again (air suspension too!) It is a rocket for what it is - for the older crowd: it accelerates like an 06 6-speed v6 did as an suv 👀
