Honda Shutting off while driving SOLUTION!

How to replace your Main Relay (Fuel Pump Relay) in a 1997-2001 Honda CRV.
I replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs & wires, distributor, and ignition switch. And it is still shutting off and died on me while driving. Usually when i was cruising at 45, even 65 on the interstate. Engine would just conk out, while all electrical stuff stayed on, lights, radio, heater. The RPMs would go down to 0 and I'd just cost to a stop. It would take anywhere between one minute and a half hour to get it to turn over and come back to life.
Then somebody suggested I replace the fuel pump relay (main relay). Only cost $2 at a U-Pull-it Junk Yard. Incredibly easy swap out, in a 1997-2001 Honda CRV located behind the glove box to the right side, you have to remove the glove box stops and the side plastic piece to get to it, remove one bolt, one plug, stuck the new one in, and presto, hasn't died on me since. SOLVED!

I went and picked up the part and the car ran for 7 hours straight and didn't cut off until I shut it off. Before I could only run the car for 45 - 60 minutes before it shuts off. Thank You KatCanDo

Hi Bentley. I was having a similar issue. Your video was a major facilitator in resolving it. In short, I went to the junk yard and paid 3.50 for a relay and the vehicle did not shut down on me when it reached operating temperature. It was my second effort at the problem as I initially cleaned the injectors. The prior owner had already changed plugs, wires and a portion of the distributor. When I saw your video, I felt strongly that this was the problem: it just made sense in explaining what was happening. These parts stores, in my opinion, are a little over eager to sell parts. Thank you for getting out the information and my empathy for all the troubles that you experienced. Know that your sacrifice has helped me and others. I hope that gives you some solace. Ben

After installing a new distributor in my '99 CRV and having it shut off 3 days later I saw this video. I did the much simpler repair. I'm now 7 days in without incident. Wish I had seen this first.

I had exactly same problem. I was going to replace one after another, but i saw yours and i tried it. took the unit ot and resolder the unit and put it back in. No problem ever since. Cost? Big fat ZERO!!!! Thanxs guy. keep it up.

Thanks a lot Frank for the insight and info. Will be updating if this fixes the problem. I switched the Ignition coils and fuel filter, but still died on me and won't start. So I'm trying this and ICM. Having my Faith in God that this will solve the problem. EDIT: So my problem was a stripped timing belt. After replacing ICM, Main Relay, Ignition Coil, Spark Plugs, Battery Terminals, Battery wires - I finally found distributor rotor wasnt turning - Took car to a mechanic and comfirmed the timing belt teeth had stripped. Thanks to God valves didn't bend from Piston Impact and car is up and running now. And I am more than happy and grateful to have my CRV back 🚗 🌞

@@justinmedina2969 Mine turns off at stop lights when RPM are low. Engine light when on, the scaner said to change the cranck shaft position sensor, so I did, but that hasn’t solve the problem. I did notice it to be failing more often when I turned the AC on and the temperature out side is high. I’ll try this and see if that works. I’ll let you know. My 1998 crv turned off on me on the freeway while it made a turn. Luckily, there was minimal traffic and I was able to pull over to the shoulder. Oddly enough, the crv turned on by itself without turning the key

@@cg84332 when your power cut off, did your electricals still stay on? im having a problem with my 04 CRV. when the problem happens, the VSA and /!\ turns on. but once i turn off the car and turn it back on the problem goes away for about an hour

@@superduperretardman yes & no. when the engine would die on me, all the dashboard lights would come on like when u turn the key to the position right before ignition. so that did includes the check engine light, but it never came on alone in regards to this issue.

Could this same thing cause the vehicle to temporarily not start, not turn over, no ignition click as well? I had my CRV turn while driving a few months back and it wouldn’t start. Got it towed the next day and it started right up no issues. Replaced the ignition switch but twice more I’ve had it be unresponsive after driving it. No crank, no click but lights and everything works still. After it sits for awhile it starts right up like nothing ever happened and runs like a dream.

I have a 1999 Honda Civic and I have this problem. It usually happens on warm or hot days. I’ll go to start my civic and it won’t start the first time. It will take like 9 to 10 times until it finally starts. When the car starts normally and while I am driving the engine will die/ shut off. Now mind you, I still have electricity in the car while the engine is off. But then it will take a couple more tries until it finally starts again. It’s so annoying and I’ve wondered what this problem could be for months.
