I dive into the carburetors on the Honda SuperHawk 996 (VTR1000) and see what's up. Everything comes apart, needle, jets, bowl, etc. Clean it and reassemble.

On the throttle cable removal, I've always removed the two screws holding the mounting plate for the two cables - once released, remove the two cables from the throttle body - no tinkering with the throttle cable tension adjusters. Also, while those two screws are removed, replace them with new M3.5 or M4's or whatever they are. Maybe try two M-bolts that are a couple/few mm's longer and see if there is interference and to get more bite on things - one of mine stripped, so grabbing more Al material in the carb' housing would be preferable to the stock length screws. I see the idle pilot screws are non-molested with the "D-shape fitting". I do recommend leaving them at their stock setting; but others who have readjusted them, remove them and take a Dremel and slim grinding disk and make "slots" so a "flat-head screwdriver type" carburetor adjuster can be utilized, instead of the proprietary Honda adjusting tool. Also, just a heads up... ...getting carb' cleaner around rubber components... ;) Right, and with the carbs all the way off like this: Has the bike had a carb sync recently? If so, (and do the following no matter what for your records) take a TPS measurement with an Ohm meter. Two of the three terminals should be 500 Ohms ( +/-10 Ohms). ...Note #736: With the carbs off like this, there are two right-angled black plastic pipings - one coming up from each of the carbs.... ...upon reassembly and installation of the airbox - the front one fitting to the lower portion of the airbox is a very competitive effort to do successfully and properly. Note #823: Diaphram replacement: If you find a legitimate place other than Honda to get replacements, please let me know. Mine is an '01, and I found more than several hairline cracks coming through recently. Replacements from Honda - the pricing just went up about $15+ each recently - this rework had been on my list for awhile, and a throttle body diaphragm replacement is ~$90 each - the come with the diaphragm, and piston assembled, from the factory. Cheers 'n' a happy 'n' safe new year to you Brian. -Matthew

I put a set of delkavic mufflers and my bike is running very rich, can you tell me what kind of jets I need to buy, factory air box by the way!

Hi Brandon. I would recommend going to the Delkavic website and looking for the reference for your bike (or email/call/tweet them). They should best be able to help you. Depends on your altitude too.
