Honda Thumb Throttle Backyard Test!

I haved changed the the thumb throttle to the Honda 300ex thumb throttle ,due that it's more comfortable and easier to push, hopefully this helps me out in the next race ,last race I had a lot of thumb and hand cramps do that the Raptor thumb throttle is pretty heavy to push and thumb angle was pretty extreme, wish me luck! @@thumbgas888 i grew up on quads, so im just 150% more comfortable with a thumb throttle. In my younger days i wouldn't have cared, but that wiskey throttle shit scares the hell out of me now lol. It was really easy to do once i knew what to get. The honda throttles i found out haven't changed much over the years. The one i got off ebay was from an 86 250r i think. But , yea a vid would be great for some. I know i use video tutorials alot, but can also figure things out pretty good with a little research.

What bike did you put that on? I grew up on the "killer" 3 wheelers and unfortunately sold my '86 Honda 250R. I'd give nearly anything to have it back, but oh well. Anyway, I had a small whiskey throttle experience over the weekend. I usually don't have a problem with it, but with the arm pump I get it is always in the back of my mind and interferes with my enjoyment of riding. Too much time in the gym and what it's done to my forearms seems to be irreversible...Thumb throttle seems to be the way to go, as I only have issues with the throttle hand. Just curious if yours is a newer bike with fuel injection. I'm wanting to do this conversion with either a 350 or 450. Thanks.

How did you do this. I’m 40% disabled in my right wrist due to an on duty injury (police officer) - 4 surgeries, pins fusions, etc. I purchased a 2019 YZ250FX in the fall after buying my son a dirt bike and my daughter an ATV. I refuse to be disabled and resort to an ATV. Any help with this conversion is appreciated. I can ride the bike with the normal throttle for about an hour. After that my wrist gets worn out and I have no throttle control. I think a thumb throttle would be what I need.

Thanks for watching Sr. And thank you for your service, sorry to hear about your injuries. This mod is very simple to do if you have a little mechanical knowledge. Simple go to Ebay and grab yourself a Honda 300EX or 400Ex used Thumb throttle,they are both the same. Go to your local Dealership or shop and get a 2010 YZF450 EFI atv Throttle cable. Now that you have all Items, remove your twist throttle and disconnect from throttle body, save it for future if you sell the bike😛. Now that the cables and twist throttle assy is out go ahead and intall the thumb throttle. Note: you need to move around your controls in order to fit the new assy. Also you need to buy ATV hand grips. Now atatch the new cable to the pull side if the throttle body,no need for two cables scince the spring is strong enough to close the TB flap. Now that is attached put the cap back on the side of the TB,make sure you cap the hole from the other cable. Route the cable the same way the original cable was, atatch to the 300/400ex thumb throttle,amd adjust your play,I am set at 1/4",make sure you have free movement with no bind and go test ride it,recheck nothing moved and go havr fun. I will make a video of how to, scince I get lots of questions. Hope I helped.

@@cristiantorres6725 You can buy these from Amazon from 12 to 20 dollars. It doesn't have to be the Honda brand or 2010. Just do a search for Gas Thumb Throttle. They come with a cable but you may not need to use the cable it comes with or that cable may be he wrong size. You won't know until you try it. You'll most likely have to adjust the cable at both ends to get it working right. I'm using one with a 150cc scooter.

Great idea! No more whisky throttle. I would prefer a thumb throttle over the standard hand throttle. I have a Yamaha WR250F. I would love to have a thumb throttle. YES!!!!!!Hello and Thx for watching, Very easy!!. Buy a cable from yzf450 atv and a thumbthrottle from a Honda 300 or 400ex Ebay, they are the same. Remove twist throttle assy with cables. Now attach the new cable to the Throttle body actuator,remember you have two holes there,put the cable where is openong the Throttle body buterfly. Route the cable up the same route the original cables were. Mount the thumbthrottle on the bar in a position you like. Attach cable to the thumbthrottle assy adjust front brake lever. Well to give you a little of my background, I served the US ARMY for 12yrs,and on my last deployment to Iraq, in a mission I got blown up and messed up my right hand and wrist to almost no movement also other injuries that made me come back in an induced coma for two months, mind you this happend back in 2012, I have movement but with the twist I am very limited. The only way to me to ride comfortably is the Thumb throttle👍. And that's where my channel's name "Thumbgas" come from lol.

Same thing,honda 400ex and contact Motion pro and let them build a custom cable for your application, its very easy to do. When I used to have the FX I used a YFZ450 cable and it worked, you can also use one from the can am 570 as a friend of mine did it that way

Any Honda 300ex/400ex throttle assy works, the cable is what is different, if its Fi then use an ATV cable for Fi. If its Carburated then you have to see if has a throttle body or a regular top cable carburetor

Most 4 strokes have a duel cable throttle system, I believe on of the cables is used for the throttle positioning sensor. in you video, i only see one cable going to the throttle housing. Can you explain how you overcame the need for the second cable? Thanks!

🤔🤔well on that I dont know!,mine had two cables,one for opening the throttle flap and the other basically TO close it in case of WOT stuck. The return spring is strong enough to close the flap, I don't know what to say maybe use a single cable that pulls two like the banshee, maybe that would work

I just did this to my CRF and I am having a lot of trouble with the front brake lever hitting the throttle, preventing my from being able to fully use my front brake. Did you encounter any issues with this?

Yes I did,I just slide the master cylinder in more since I only use 1/2 fingers on front brake. Just slide it over a little till it clears it,👊🏽😎

Thx for watching,You basically need a Honda 400/300ex thumbthrottle assy, you can get it on eBay for like $30/50, depending on your carb you'll need difrent cable,I used a Raptor or yfz450 atv cable,but again depending on your carb setup

Find a cable from a yfz450,measure it before installing it to make sure it's long enough, then remove both cables and twist throttle, attach new cable to the butterfly side that opens the throttle,route the cable and attach to the thumbthrottle and you are done. I just did my wife's new 2021 klx230R and it was super easy,in fact I used the cable that I used on the yz250fx that you see on this video and it worked perfectly.

When it's carbed it's a PiTA to work with and you have to do a little bit of fabrication on the cable to make it work properly,like I did on my 125x and my new 250X

This one is actually more responsive and more comfortable,the video sometimes is a little off,but the other one is very nice for fun rides where you take brks, but for racing for two hours mehhh hand and thumb cramps,if you checked my race video,by the end look at my hand its in a wierd angle and my thumb is moving all funny,thats all cramps. The Honda one its closer to the bars and has better Leverage, will see if will actually help me on the next race. Remember comfortable is fast.

I've never done a Honda but maybe even the cable from the 400ex might work or the 450r, you basically have to match cable length and cable end to your carb or throttle actuator for Fi

Yes, the cable I used was a cable from a YFZ450 fuel injected and I eliminated the returned cable,the spring on the throttle body is strong enough to return the throttle flap back to close. So far so good the mod have been working for a year now and no problems at all.Good luck ! Thanks for checking it out!

Never, as long as you keep everything lubed and clean, it will always work. So far on my 250fx has been working for 2.5 years so far. No problems

Also, make sure you use ATV grips instead of regular dirt bike grips because the flange on dirt bike grips is too big to let the throttle lever move freely. I learned the hard way. I had used a regular dirt bike grip once and ONLY once. I cut the bottom half of the flange off so that there was full of clearance and the throttle lever could move freely, then I glued the grip in place and let it dry overnight. Next day everything was great until about an hour into riding when the grip glue let go. The grip twisted enough to where the tall part of the flange came between the throttle lever and the bar and the lever became stuck. Of course this happened when i was going up a dune WFO. I was getting too close to the top of the dune to just pull in the clutch and stop (plus I hadn't realized what the hell was going on), so I bailed and my bike ghosted off the top of the dune. Lesson learned! Cool thing with the thumb throttle is you can go with any clamp on style grips you want...and as @thumbgas said, say goodbye to arm pump and whiskey throttle! Just expect to hear some crap from other mx riders who have a very strong opinion about thumb throttles on a dirt bike lol
