I have one, bought it new in 1992 and we did several km:s the first 10 years. Not that many nowadays, but it approaches 170.000 km and the only thing (yet) renovated is the coupling to the start engine. Also own a K1300S from 2015. Have been doing quite serious touring with the Honda to southern Europe and driving from Adenau (mid-west germany) to home which meant about 1100 km without other rest than fuelling up and shopping on my way home. This bike is probably any bikers best friend, if you want a medium sized bike that has the ability to take you and a friend/girlfriend/wife long trips "somewhat" fast and reliably, with some comfort. First time me and my wife (not married then) travelled together south through Europe, we went about 800 km:s before first nights sleep. My wife was - as I - tired, but did not complain. She has told me, that if I pass away, she´ll sell the BMW and keep the Honda...

I still have mine. Bought new in 1990. It was the most expensive 750cc bike at the time. Everything stated is true about it. One of the greatest bikes from Honda. the build quality is impeccable. And yes, the voltage regulator is a weakness. I moved mine to the rear subframe to get it away from the engine heat. Engine was very hot. As are the two headers passing by your right ankle. Without boots, it was unbearable. There is a factory heatshield, but wasn't enough. I installed header wrap to reduce the burns. The USA market didn't get the fuel petcock or digital clock.
@uhtred7860 Жыл бұрын
Well, all the homologation special 750s were more expensive, and the F1 Ducati 750, but for the "normal" road bike 750s it was probably the most expensive. The US market also didn't get the improved 88/89 VFR750 RC24 for some reason either.

The RC24s of 88 & 89 had 17 inch wheels front and rear, this wasn't new for the RC36, it was only the 86/87 RC24s that had 16/18 inch wheels. The RC36 wasn't as sporty as the earlier RC24s and was heavier, and no faster, and unlike the earlier bikes, were never raced by Honda (although i'm sure some owners took theirs to the track :-) The earlier RC24s had HRC race kits made for them, and were successful in racing before the RC-30 took over racing duties.. The 86/87 RC24 VFR's look exactly like the 88/89 RC24's but in fact, the fairing will not interchange, the later ones also got larger carbs and valves, a 2 position screen, a fuel gauge, a clock and some other improvements, the 88/89 models were not imported into the U.S.

I had the first VF1000 it had several faults but was never beaten on the road at that time. Then got the first Monoshock VFR750 in red. A thing of beauty, it even had a fairing for the sidestand. Quite light , suspension superrb power delivery, enough. On a dawn sunday morning ride I took two fast cars on a windey bumpy road 100mph+ then stopped at a Café. Sat down for a coffee, three minutes later the cars arrived they stopped and they stared at It , it was their "What the F**k is that?" moment. It had one fault, cooked your legs on a hot day in traffic. It was stolen in Paris if not I would still be riding it. Replaced by 800 pgi in Blue. The last cascade of pignions. What you do not realise is that motor perfection means you put in oil and 5000 km distantt you lift out the dipstick and it is still clear NOT black

If only Honda had done the decent thing by their customers and recalled the earlier engines more of them might have gone on to buy Honda again. Unlike this one who maintains his discust with Honda. This problem was not confined to the 750 motors. The 1000cc and 500cc motors were of the same flawed design.The clue to the problem is the lack of semicircular rubbers in the cylinder heads. The bearings for the cam shafts were not line bored, therefor had no accurate alignment. So Honda increased the running clearances and lost the oil pressure. These motors were a disaster, mine failed at 869 miles, one of the rockers flaked and the cams fretted. I blue printed my heads and it was fine but by then I had lost faith with Honda, I didn't buy another for 17 years. Funny never had a single mechanical problem with any of my Suzuki's or Kawasaki's.
@nigelmitchell3515 жыл бұрын
@Goetmhmiac Problem mainly with the press, do you work for Honda ???? No excusses, punters like me put their hard earned cash for this shit !!!! The design was badly flawed and the bikes should have been recalled ! I had owned GS & GSX Suzuki's and GPZ Kawas far better bikes . Kawasaki even made the 16 inch front wheel work unlike the VF which was liable to tip you in badly at low speed. I was disgusted with honda and didn't buy another for 17 years. Then I got a fireblade.
@nigelmitchell3515 жыл бұрын
@Goetmhmiac The issue was not fixed under warranty, the issue was being kicked into the long grass. Fixing the issue would have entailed replacing the cylinder heads, Honda only did this with the late model 500. Then not retrospectively. Most punters probably didn't even know their cams and fork rockers were being changed at services. So Honda just kept changing cams until you were out of warranty. Bye-bye. They denied anything was wrong full stop for ages! No apologies, no recall, just bullshit like the "special tool for tappet setting, ha bloody ha! The cam chain tensioners were probably OK by design, if the location for the cam sprockets on the cam had been adequate then they would not have run accentricly and worn out the tensioners. This design must have been Hondas worst, but they cannot be so easily forgiven for their contempt for their customers! I am sure the later gear driven cam model was good, but there's would have been no need for this expensive option had they got it right in the first place. As for the 16 inch front, my GPZ900 had a far better geometry which gave alot more confidence at any speed. That was a praise worthy bike.
@uhtred7860 Жыл бұрын
Here in NZ, I only came across the cam problems on the 750 engine, I never saw, or heard of a 1000 with the issue, or the 400 and 500. Our shop raced both a 1000 and 500 in production class, and we never saw cam problems on either bike, or on any we sold. Unlike the VF750. Honda sent technical bulletins and we attended workshop classes at the importers HQ, to deal with the problem, they sold an oil additive and told owners to thoroughly warm up their engines without letting it idle for long periods. There were also modifications, but If i recall, the fix finally came when they line bored the head and cam cap differently.
@nigelmitchell351 Жыл бұрын
@@uhtred7860 Here in the UK, I don't think the 500 & 1000 sold in the same numbers as the two 750 models, meaning the shaft and chain drives. Both of these suffered the same issues. All this, oil additives and special tappit setting tools, was smoke and mirrors. If there really were no issues with the 500 & 1000's which shared exactly the same cylinder head design and manufacture, I'd be interested to hear why not..... Honda's cavalier attitude to us as customers still annoys me, this was the first brand new bike I ever bought.....
@uhtred7860 Жыл бұрын
@@nigelmitchell351 The problem was traced to mismatched cams and bearing caps, it was cured, by line boring the camshaft journals so the cams were running true in their bearings, once that was done they stopped having cam issues. Blue Wing Honda (the NZ importer ) was far better in acknowledging the issue and dealing with it, and customers than what ive heard about Honda UK (and other countries) probably due to the way smaller population and amount of bikes involved (tiny compared to the UK) We had a Honda bigwig come over and talk to us, (about Hondas quad bikes and farm bikes, not the cam issues, they were pushing hard to become the leading brand in NZ then, a spot Suzuki held and still does) and the boss of my shop grilled him about the issue, he was adamant the issue was not picked up in testing, and i believe him, they were very embarrassed by the whole affair, and Honda had had a number of bikes with issues concerning cam chains and tensioners around that time, CX, CBX550. I would have been pissed if i had just bought one and had been treated the way Honda treated many people like you. I actually had a similar experience with a Ducati SS in the mid 90s, put me off Ducati for life.

@@Marc_Remillard Engine in all RC36 models has the same bore, stroke, transmission, clutch etc. Later version is more of a extensive face lift rather than new bike. I wouldn't want to spoil your mood but 118 HP you mentioned is very far fetched(in fact BS) Both versions actually produce very close numbers in terms of power(just a tad over 100HP) and the difference is extremely marginal. Later bike changed in many other ways but numbers put out by the motor are nearly identical. I imagine you love your bike but what i would suggest to you is taking it for a quick dyno run(probably 100 OZ bucks i'd imagie) and you'll probably see 90HP(95 at most) at the wheel.. Add 10% to those numbers to compensate for drivetrain loss and that's what your bike's engine makes.
