I was so impressed when the Crosstourer was introduced, as well as the VFR1200 before it. They unfortunately did not make it to Canadian shores. I have an ST1100 in the stable to satisfy my V4 cravings. You bring up very many good points in the video. Thank you for taking the time.

Thanks Leo, the ST is another great example of Honda 'thinking outside the box'. When you take a close look at that engine you start to appreciate what a departure from conventional Japanese motorcycle engine design it really is. Another under appreciate bike, other than by the owners.

I have a 2020 red Highlander DCT ....and I absolutely love it! It also has the rarity factor and often attracts more passing interest when parked up among a row of ubiquitous German adventure bikes. I have just 2 negatives amongst many positives....I wish it had cruise control, which would've been very handy on my recent NC500 trip, and the instruments are a little bit old school in design, although all the information you need is there. However, I can easily live with those two given how much fun I have riding it.

Hi Dave, great to hear from Canada. We were very close to getting the V Strom, I really like how the latest model has captured the look of Suzuki's 1980's trial bikes like the 'ER' as we called them in the UK. I just felt it was too much of a step away from the Honda Blackbird. Keep watching, have you been following the Coast Adventure?

Great review. I had two CTs over the course of around 7 years. First a manual and later a DCT. It’s a massively underrated bike that sadly Honda never appeared to back. Over its lifetime they never added the little bits and pieces that many riders now expect in this class of bike. I came to the point after 4 years of ownership of my DCT that it was time for a change. If Honda had have given the bike a decent update, not a lot, cruise, better lights, bit of a face lift I’d probably be on my third. I moved over to the dark side and bought a 1250GS. The BMW is a really good bike, but I will concede, I do miss my DCT Crosstourer.

Hi Hartley, you make an excellent point, Honda really had something and they pretty much threw it away. Take a look at the current lineup of most manufacturers and most of them are offering a hybrid of sports tourer and adventure bike that fill the gap left by the Crosstourer.

Hi Lone Rider, I'm still trying to get my head around KZbin and just realised replies to comments don't get flagged as 'not responded to' so sorry for just picking up on this. I was the same about D mode, really didn't like it at first but ended up forgetting for a couple of days to change to sport and the 'penny dropped'. I now get what Honda were doing and like the way it creates an almost completely different riding experience to sport. It's great when you just want to chill out. I'm amazed at how high a gear at such low speeds that motor can pull and does it smoothly and effortlessly.

@@greatbritishbikingadventures hi, no need to be sorry at all. KZbin keep updating their App and not for the better, but it is what it is. That V4 power plant in the 1200 crosstourer is just something else, it’s a magnificent piece of Japanese engineering and which we shall never see again put into one of their motorcycles 😢. I’m Preston Lancs based and and spend most of my summer riding in the Yorkshire Dales / North York Moors and the northern Pennines, and on the odd occasion the Lake District. I have a 56 litre top box and two soft bag side panniers for my days out, and I carry all sorts in them from gas and associated equipment for cooking, binoculars, camera equipment, camping gear, and the list goes on. I wouldn’t know if you use Facebook, but there are two groups on there for the H Crosstourer and they are full of handy information, pictures and the like. There are some European guys that post on there that have covered big mileages ranging from 200 to 400 thousand kilometres and some with no issues at all with their crosstourers, it sure is one excellent motorcycle 👌. All the very best to you and your wife on your crosstourer travels.

Hugely underrated bike and engine. Got a reputation for being boring, even bikers who never ridden one seem to have that opinion 🤔. A good video, and your channel is new to me after another search for the Crosstourer. I'm in a similar situation in that I have a Blackbird (5 years in now), and have been seriously considering the 1200X as a suitable replacement as my needs - like yours - would likely need the Blackbird modified into a bike it wasn't designed to be. Thanks for the insight in this video, I'll get looking at the others on your channel.

Thanks Damien, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. In my opinion, you won't regret it if you end up with a CT. All I would say, is that if I didn't need to take a passenger and additional luggage then I probably would have opted for something a bit smaller, perhaps the Crossrunner, Yamaha T7 or (dare I say) an NC750X! Or, if your pockets are a bit deeper the newer offerings like the Suzuki 800DE or Honda's new 750 Transalp. That said, I might still miss the power and presence of the Crosstourer and (IMO) you can't beat a V4! Enjoy the channel.

Your observations are spot-on. I am so happy with one of the rare Crosstourers (2017) in the western US. I'm sure the DCT is outstanding but al least the massive torque reduces shifting compared to many bikes.
@greatbritishbikingadventures
@greatbritishbikingadventures Жыл бұрын
Hi Firesail, great to hear from the US! The torque is something else. I've come from a Blackbird, which is a more powerful bike but only if you rev it. In the real world, and perhaps as I get older, I like having that power lower down. Along with the different riding position, it's made me appreciate riding and touring in a different way. It's no less fun, more comfortable and can still be thrown around a bit as well.

Brilliant video. Let me say what brought me here: I am after a 3700km+ trip around Europe on my 1998 VFR 800 (without a pillion, but with quite some luggage). And I did all the stuff that you did to your Blackbird - wider and higher bars, extended the windscreen to stupid heights... it still does not cut it in terms of seating comfort, wind protection and performance over less-than-ideal road surfaces, compared to my friends' GSs and a Tracer. Also, the lack of torque at low revs pushes me to stay above 5krpm to make it really go. Most of the hairpins I have to do in 1st gear... I have been trying to convince myself that this is the right bike for me... but I think it is the amazing characteristics and sound of the V4 and the pedigree that keeps me having it. Now... the bike needs some serious maintenance and I am after a more reasonable (and less mischievous) bike and the CT DCT was on my mind for ages. I have read all the comments that are super useful, but I was wondering - what kind of fuel efficiency can you get from this bike on B-road riding and on highways?... And one other question: what bikes were coming through your mind when considering the sports touring (and not adventure touring) segment, after changing from the Blackbird? Isn't the CT a bit 'unexciting'...? Best wishes from Norway (we have some steep hairpins too here, like in your other video :D)
@greatbritishbikingadventures
@greatbritishbikingadventures Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your kind comments, it's always nice to be appreciated. Let's start with the other bikes I considered. Given the stipulations I said in the review but especially the need for a pillion to be carried effortlessly and in comfort then our shortlist was really quite short - KTM1290 BMW1200/50GS Ducati Multistrada (yes, believe it or not) Africa Twin Suzuki 1000/50 V Strom Kawasaki 1000 Versys Honda Crosstourer Of those, we only test rode the KTM and AT. I loved them both, but there's very few bikes I don't appreciate in some way and just love riding anything. But, they both had an issue identified by my wife who has to sit on the back all day. Too much vibration 😳! In fairness, it was a very valid point. It therefore ruled out 3 of the other bikes on the list (I can't afford the V4 Ducati). We were on the verge of test riding a Versys when we went to see the CT we bought and did the deal without looking any further. I'm sure we would have been impressed by the Versys and others like it, such as the Tracer but what I preferred about the CT was it was more adventure and less touring and that beautiful V4 engine. I think Honda can lay claim to building the most iconic V4 motorcycle engine the world has ever seen and the CT may well be the last bike to use it. The linear power curve is amazing, especially for the weight and roads we use. What's the point of 160+ hp when you have to rev high to access it? It's a proven engine with few (if any) issues and it's not nearly as expensive to maintain as some of the others on the list. As for fuel consumption, I'm not the type to measure it but I guess around 40mpg - I really don't know but it's not bothered me. If I was commuting 30 miles a day to work then it might become an issue. Finally, given what you're thinking of doing I pose this scenario - If I was riding solo but still wanted a degree of comfort and load capacity, was concerned about fuel consumption, could eat the miles up, was mega reliable and could still be fun and bring a smile then I would be considering the unthinkable - The Honda NC750X !!! And, with my experience of DCT I'd probably get that version. Skeptical? Check this out first - kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ27lXaIp5KaptU What has become of me? I'll be suggesting a scooter next! All the best with your plans. Let me know if you end up putting any of it on KZbin.

Thanks for your comment. Going from a ZZR1200, you will definitely notice a difference in the top end power. The CT is a detuned VFR1200. I can’t recall the exact figures but it takes 160/70ish down to 120ish. BUT it converts the lost bhp into torque. The pulling power is amazing and very smooth, it doesn’t chug like a twin. Hello and thank you. It's been a while since I watched the review but I'm pretty sure I say it was a pity Honda didn't give it cruise control? I've just committed to buy a 2015 VFR1200X DCT, I had VFR's (750 and 800's) for 12 years before turning to Triumph Tigers 10 years ago for the more upright riding position, and dislike of the twins and inline 4's that flood the market, I put a deposit on a 2022 Tiger 1200 but after a demo ride cancelled my order, the T plane crank has ruined the triple engine, I wanted a shaft drive adventure bike that wasn't a twin or a Ducati! Despite worries about the weight and fuel consumption and lack of electronics I looked at and bought a Crosstourer! I'd loved to have stayed loyal to the British Triumph, but they need to stop trying to build a GS and just build a good touring adventure bike, 99% of ridden miles won't be off road so don't focus on that 1%

Hi Gav, I'm with you. We first started looking for a replacement for the Blackbird a couple of years before buying the Crosstourer and took a KTM for a test ride. Esther didn't like the twin. You can't beat a 4 cylinder for smoothness. It's funny how the 4 cylinder heralded the end of the British twin only for it to make a come back back with every manufacturer in recent years! There's pros and cons but we love the Crosstourer, it might be a compromise but it does so many things really well. I'm sure you won't be disappointed with your decision.

I had a Honda Blackbird before, so probably very similar to your BMW. The improvement in comfort and wind protection is very noticeable. When we first got the CT we were amazed at the difference. Over time, we've noticed some buffeting (as you would) but are still mightily impressed with the amount of wind protection/noise compared with the Blackbird. The screen is adjustable and the highest position is plenty high enough. It's also an aftermarket screen and bigger than the Honda one. Givi do an even bigger screen if you need it. As for comfort, that was also 'chalk & cheese'. Once you get used to the bolt upright seated position you really appreciate the lack of strain on wrists, hands, arms, back etc. We've spent 10 hours a day riding it for 30 days, sometimes with very few short stops, and it's been great. Don't get me wrong, it's no Goldwing but it's still very comfortable. Having the aftermarket seat probably makes a big difference but we wouldn't know because it came with the bike and have never tried the original.

I too wish the VFR1200X were still sold. I bought the new NT1100 which is also a very fine bike but that V4 of the Crosstourer sure looks appealing. Is the gas tank a bit small? On the VFR1200F that was a common complaint. Finally I too am a dedicated DCT convert. Nice review you did! Perhaps I'll find a second hand Crosstourer that in my eyes would be a "keeper".

Tank is adequate for the UK, to be honest if it were much bigger it would just add to the 'top heaviness'. If you were thinking for long distance over landing then I think there are much better bikes for that. The NT looks like a very capable machine but it's not a V4! I think most people who try it for more than just a test ride are converted to DCT!

When I was a kid I read all the motorcycle mags and used to lap up all what said about what was best etc. etc. and then I started working as a bike mechanic and got to test ride loads of bikes - what an eye opener!!! I released the media was BS!! I think you can work out what you'll probably like without test riding everything but you need to know what it is YOU want and not what the media tells you. Dare I say, the same can be said about other forms of media, but I'll stop there. Are you slowly going through all our content😁

Okay, but I'm planning to take lessons (complete novice) and start working towards doing road trips on a bike. And this bike looks perfect for that. If this is not for a novice how do I get there as fast as possible? I'm tall so anything lower than 850mm seat height won't be comfortable. Tips are welcome.

@greatbritishbikingadventures Жыл бұрын
Hi Jelte, thanks for commenting. You say you’re a complete novice planning to take lessons. As the only fact in what you’ve said that has to be the most important thing that directs your next steps. Think about it, everything else you’ve said is either a desire or an assumption. That doesn’t make them unimportant but they should not have the same weight as the fact you’ve never ridden a bike before. You say the CT looks perfect for you but how’d you know? You’ve never ridden one, in fact you’ve never ridden any motorcycle. You say anything lower than 850mm won’t be comfortable but how’d you know? You’ve never ridden a motorcycle before. Unless you’re too short to comfortably touch the ground, seat height is rarely a problem (although seating geometry might be). I genuinely thank you for your honesty but these statements simply demonstrate what you’ve said, you’re a novice. That’s not a problem, it’s great to hear someone wanting to get into motorcycling and hopefully the fact that I’m taking the time to write a detailed response will demonstrate I am genuinely trying to help. My number 1 piece of advice for anyone getting into bikes, whatever their age is as follows - GRADUALLY PROGRESS TO LARGER MORE POWERFUL BIKES. There’s so many advantages to this. Smaller bikes are fun. I’ve had the best times on bikes under 600cc. You can still ‘tour’ on smaller bikes. In fact, it adds an interesting dimension to the adventure. KZbin @RobLittleUK to see a big old man riding 1000’s miles on a vintage Yamaha YB100 or @C90adventures. Okay, they’ve taken my argument to the extreme but modern smaller bikes are surprisingly fast and capable, especially the 400-600cc twins currently on the market. Smaller bikes are cheaper to buy and run. As a novice, your insurance on something a CT is going to be high. Also, if you discover motorcycling is not for you then you’re not going to lose as much in depreciation. No doubt, the Crosstourer is an excellent motorcycle but if my circumstances were different I would probably ride something else. In particular, if most of my riding was without a pillion I would be on a smaller lighter bike, such as a Yamaha 700 Tenere. In 40 years, I’ve had 4 crashes. Thankfully, none of them were serious. The first 3 were when I was a novice and overestimated my abilities. Thankfully, I was riding 125 trail bikes and each time was able to pick myself and the bike up, brush off and ride on. No amount of formal lessons will hone your riding skills as much as a ‘time served apprenticeship’ on smaller bikes. I had an unrestricted full motorcycle licence at 17 years old but I still rode 125’s and 200’s for a while. I didn't progress beyond a 350cc until my 30's when I bought my first new bike, a Yamaha 600cc Thundercat that I still have today. A work colleague once did a direct access course and his first bike was a Honda CBR600 Sport. He nagged me into going for a ride. I didn't want to but eventually gave in. I told him to ride within his limits, drop back if needs be and I'd meet him at the end of each section. We hit the twisties and I dialled it right back. Sure enough, he tried to keep up but couldn't handle it and came off. Thankfully he was unharmed but you couldn't say the same about his brand new bike. He made the number 1 error that I would argue is the reason for every motorcycle crash - He overestimated his capability and under estimated the bike’s capability. I’m sorry if this wasn’t what you wanted to hear but it is and always has been my number 1 piece of advice for anyone getting into bikes, whatever their age. Unfortunately, it's not always well received but I hope you will accept it in the way that it is meant. By the way, the last crash was over 20 years ago, the car driver was 100% at fault and was prosecuted by the police! Thankfully, I wasn’t badly injured. My riding was the biggest factor in ensuring the impact speed was minimal, in fact I very nearly managed to stop as he suddenly U turned in front of me.

I’m keen to hear what you’ve done about cruise? I was torn between the GS Adventure & a CT. I ended up with the GSA as it had cruise control and is very easily home serviced with a GS-911. The complexity of the V4 is beyond my home servicing skills. The whole reliability thing is fascinating. I bought a brand new NC750X DCT in 2018 and within 18 months the gearbox was playing up, my local main dealer (Fowlers) struggled to find the cause but turned out to be the shifter motor. At that point I’d lost confidence and sold it. Touch wood I’ve never had a problem with the BMW’s I’ve owned but it’s just a matter of time before something breaks 😉

Hi DervMan, just watched one of your vids and it seems like you're from our neck of the woods. The CT would definitely benefit from proper cruise control. My reliability observations were a generalisation and not based on experience. The GSA was (and still is) a very tempting option but I happen to know someone who works for BMW who was very candid about the product and rides a Yamaha Super Ten!

@@greatbritishbikingadventures I’m in Bristol. I guess the techs only ever see the faults rather the the bikes that are working well. That’s why the GS911 is such a useful bit of kit dealer level facilities but for the home mechanic. Variation is good, it’s nice seeing people on different makes and models. 👍🏻

Just to point out, DCT makes a black box of the transmission - it works according to its programming. If you ride slow manoeuvering type courses like moto-gymkhana, you will likely burn out the clutch, but Honda classes that style of riding as abusive. DCT clutches cost around $3000. They won't replace them under warranty, but you won't know if you're burning it out because there's no clutch slippage indicator on screen, and it's programmed to slip it a lot more than you or I would slip it on a manual bike. My advice is, till it's fixed, leave well alone.

Im surprised you're the first to mention the dog carrier, They seemed happy enough. I seriously considered the Versys. Never rode one but I expect it's very good two up. In the end it was too road oriented in looks and capability. I know the CT is not much better but for what off road we do it just about does the job. Having owned the bike, it's the DCT that clinches the deal. Transforms all day riding on Britain's varied roads. Don't get me wrong, I love shifting gears on a solo ride when it's all about the ride but the DCT creates a different experience giving a greater appreciation of other elements of the ride. Sorry, going on a bit now. Hope the review was helpful and all the best in making your choice Shane. I don't think you'll be disappointed with any bike on that shortlist.

Honda is so far behind the competition in terms of tech that it is embarrassing. I too looked at the AT but that still had a 1980s LCD dash with no cruise control nor lean sensitive ABS, no traction control, really really basic. I think Honda fell behind after producing bikes like the VFR800 5th and 6th gens and the Blackbird. They just seemed to lose the Will to carry on producing very bland and boring bikes. However with their new Hornet they seem to have woken up.

You make a very good point Alex and one that could perhaps be applied to all the Japanese bike manufacturers? You could almost say they have made the same mistake the British bike makers did in their decline by not keeping up with trends and consumer demands. But I think there's still one significant area where the Japanese prevail - reliability. I will now 'take cover' as I am sure not everyone will agree.

Unfortunately lots of folk buy their new bikes as they do their mobile phones - comparing on meaningless features such as TFT screen size and electronics. They even pay for their bikes as they would a phone - on a monthly credit plan. I’m on a Ducati Multistrada 1200S. The rider modes I set once and forgot about. I couldn’t care less about traction control or lean sensitive riding aids or hill start assist. You ride it using the hand and foot controls to keep you out of the hedge that’s the fun part. As for max horsepower that too is a marketing number. It only comes in at high revs AND max throttle opening, which is almost never on the road. Think about it. How many seconds are you actually at peak horsepower revs and have the throttle held wide open on a 1200 cc bike. Maybe three full seconds in a whole day of riding? Honda probably have it right with an engine that delivers big torque and power from three to seven grand which is actually where you use it. I’m looking forward to testing this Honda.

@@alexmorgan3435 for me it was the engine. A v-twin derived from the 1098 and then 1198 superbike engine but optimised for the road. I think I described that owners like me don’t use the tech. I’ve ridden the VFR1200F and it has a very exciting engine, with a DAM exhaust it even sounds amazing. I’m looking forward to the VFR1200X version which should be even better on the road with a very flat torque and power curve. I’m looking forward to that engine and the way it makes usable power. It’s funny that you like the new Hornet. I do too, but it’s a parallel twin - the second cheapest engine configuration to make after a single. If you look at the class of 2023 and compare it to the bikes of 2003. You will see that budget 600cc inline 4s from 20 years ago were making more power and weighed considerably less than the current crop of bikes 600cc to 800cc bikes. If you can see past the TFT screens and the cheap electronic tech components you can go and find some of the best engines and motorbikes and ride them now before they are gone forever. The Hornet is cheap but it’s never going to be one of the all time great motorbikes, just another economy parallel twin with a cheap to make TFT screen and ride modes which after a few months of ownership you simply don’t use.

We managed to get it welded because it was steel and continue our trip thank god. I know it's pretty rare but I've also had a pushbike welded when on a camping trip so I'd go for steel or titanium if possible now.
