A lot of variables there. But mainly any type of inverter generator as they have controls on the carburetor to adjust the engine speed up and down. So on low loads it will drop down engine rpm to a little above idle thus saving fuel.

I service all size generators for a living and at the beginning of summer the largest cable company contacted my company to service about 60 little guys like these. They had 29 Hondas and 27 Generacs. After these very abused units were serviced, 26 of those Hondas worked perfect. Only 7... 7 of the Generacs were 100% after the services. The rest needed parts or outright need replaced. So I'd advise anyone buying one of these little guys, if you're going to use it a lot and even abused it, buy the Honda.

How many hrs on them?
@bbtls
@bbtls 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomzhang8675 none of them have hour meters installed, but I would say with their age and how they use them most often, avg runtime of 2-3 hours during each heavy storm, the Hondas probably have 1200-1500 hours while the working Generacs (two years newer) probably in the 900-1200 range. That's if they're used evenly. While servicing them, the guys would literally wait until I finished with a Honda before taking a working Generac. If that holds true when I'm not there, Generac use case and hours would go down but quite a bit.

I have read of replies from Honda owners with over 3000 hrs on the small 2000 and the bigger 3000. They said they have hour meters from what they said but I have no proof just from what they said. 3000 isn’t bad or unlikely with proper care and not abused, basically not running over 90% of rated power all the time. But the 2200 really is a beast for what it is. Wish they had a 2500.

I owned a Honda generator (2000) in the late 1980s - 90s for eight years total. I used to to detail cars mobile for 6-10 hours a day. Then I sold that business along with the generator. 15 years later I called the guy to see how he was doing. Generator still running fine. Thousands and thousands of hours. Decades of use. Always started on the first pull. Absolutely amazing.

I’ve had my Honda EU2200i for 5 years now. Great generator. Just this winter we lost power for 4 days at the cottage. It ran 24/7 straight. Powered the fridge/freezer, lights. No issues at all. Low oil automatic shut off worked great (that was my fault). Very little maintenance needed. It’s just a great machine. I find the fuel consumption is very good also. Bought the generac for $365 on Amazon a week or so after Black Friday. Haven't lost power yet but I bought it specifically to handle the pellet stove in case we do. I ran it for 10 hours with no load just to break it in with a magnetic dipstick. Also added a run time counter. After the initial test I went ahead and changed the oil and then ran the pellet stove for around 24 hours. Unsurprisingly, had no issues. For the price of entry compared to the frequency I'm likely to use it (we've only really had one real outage in the five years we've lived here), I'd say it's a winner. Honda does have a stellar reputation, but it's hard to justify $1000+ for what we are using it for. For those who use this for camping or work, I'd say that makes the Honda a much more justifiable price.

Excellent review. I bought a Honda EU2200i on the morning Hurricane Helene hit western NC in Sept 2024. It was one of the last 2 units our nearby Lowes had in stock. We were without power for 4 days and used it at two different homes to keep the freezers powered for a few hours every day, run a TV and heat things up in a microwave. It ran great. My brother has a Generac GP2200i and we couldn't get it started. Now that I'm getting more educated on these things, it sounds like he either has an oil fill cutoff switch issue or perhaps one of the control boards went bad. He said even on the first day he used it, it would surge up and down continually when running in eco mode and low load. I suspect it was probably bad out of the box.

That heat gun test is impressive. The Honda put out cleaner power and was considerably quieter doing it. Remember decibel measurements aren't linear, so 72 constant decibels can almost seem twice as loud as 62. This makes a huge difference if you're at a camp site. I'd love to get a Honda, but the $1100 price tag is too much. If it were closer to $800 or so it would make the choice easier IMO. I know Honda price locks their generators, but I'd like to see a dealer invoice to know exactly what they're getting from Honda. Pricing competition wouldn't be a bad thing for us consumers.

If you are going to use it all the time and really beat them up then a Honda may be your better option but for recreational and here and there use then many other options are fine. Also a generator sometimes is only as good as its owner. You have to remember to look at them once in a while and fire it up.

Tried both for myself. Got a Generac 2200, great value, not all that loud and a seemingly solid unit. Couldn't resist trying the Honda. Immediate difference in volume level, Honda is just so darn quiet and runs at a different, more mellow "sound/tune" that helps it be even more unnoticeable. Thought the app would be trivial, but its actually handy to see actual running amps and keep track of maintenance intervals/etc. Could absolutely do without the CO2 monitor thing, maybe a 12v & usb could by put there instead. Saved a hundred and nine bucks on the Honda at Home Depot with a discount.

When she compared the ryobi to the honda, she decided that the ryobi was twice as loud. She was using my 20 year old Central Electric inverter generator from Harbor Fright. It is a little harder to start and much louder than modern generators. After comparing several generators she decided on the Honda. I probably would have chosen the Predator from harbor fright. The Honda has a larger engine and is rated for a few more watts.

I’d love to see that same test with the same size Yamaha generator. I’ve had the IS2000 for 5 years and have over 2,000 hours on it with absolutely zero issues. It has run perfectly, as quiet as the Honda, and also has a fuel gauge and fuel shutoff. Maybe the new Honda’s have one or both of these now, but they didn’t when I bought mine. These days with ethanol fuel, that fuel shutoff on the Yamaha saves a whole lot of frustration and carb cleaning if the genny sits for a month or two.

@@johnnysweekends I watched that older Yamaha-Honda 2000 comparison - great review but it was strange that the Yamaha unit held on so long without kicking off. Mine doesn’t do that - if it’s overloaded, it shuts down pretty quickly. Up to the rated load, although the voltage was slightly lower than the Honda, it was still well within the acceptable range for for AC products. And although 1 db lower noise doesn’t appear to be a lot, remember that the db scale is logarithmic, not linear, so a db or two can make quite a difference in sound level. In any case, I have enjoyed watching your reviews, and you have a new subscriber. As a side note, and while I could scroll through your full video list to answer this for myself, have you tested any of the Firman inverter generators? A few months ago I bought their 3650 remote start unit (model W03383). I had to return the first one due to engine surging issues, but I have been very impressed with the one that replaced it. I can’t speak to the longevity as I only have about 100 hours on it, but my wife and I sure like the remote start feature, and it’s relatively quiet for the size of the unit!

Thank you for subscribing 👍🏼😀 I too was surprised at the Yamaha As I love there products and really hoped for a little more. Overall it does what it is designed to do. But when you have a unit with a 98cc engine that little bit helps against 80cc one. But those little Yamaha’s are pretty bullet proof. People report back with the amount of hours and it’s in the high hundreds to a Couple thousand. And no I haven’t got into the Firman yet. Will see.

Using a generator for off grid living really puts them to the test, up here in Alaska. I know it’s opposite to what everyone says, I have had more problems with a Honda 2200 than the generac 2200. I use one of these inverter generators for my entire power generation (live off grid) and run them 10-12 hours a day minimum. I put at least 6000 hrs on the generac 2200 and had no problems other than recoil cord needing replaced and I was hard on it. Oil changes maybe every 400 -500 hrs. It did burn oil heavily at the end. It did eventually die but I was hard on it. The brand new Honda never started on the first pull, it needed a new Carb and throttle within the first year and a brand new inverter unit as well. It was awful to start, and was out of service for almost a month under warranty repair. It hated the cold as well, (-20 through -40f) but the generac didn’t mind. Currently running a cheap champion model that cost $350 and it’s on its last legs after about 8 months but I don’t know if I can complain. I want to give the Honda another shot, I’m sure I just had a lemon. But it’s a big chunk of change.

It’s true the upfront cost is a lot. But people seem to abuse them and they last. But you have a great way to test long term as your conditions really put the generators to the test. And it’s true they can all have problems. Only thing I would recommend is more frequent oil changes because the oil reservoir is really small, only a half quart as you know. Recommend is 50hrs for the small gens because they don’t hold a lot of oil. But I bet you could get away with more but it also depends how you use it. If your running at 80 percent load or there about a I would change more often. If maybe only a 1/3 rd load then you could stretch it. I don’t think heat is a real problem up there. Lol 😂 Thanks for the comment and letting us know. And thanks for watching 👍🏼😀

Synthetic oil would help with engine wear if your not already using it. I agree with you, go with the cheaper generator because they're still no way a little Honda is going to last for years and years in your particular case. I'm not saying Honda isn't a good quality generator but you really need commercial grade equipment when you run it like that.

Have you ever tried the Yamaha generators? I have had a Yamaha IS2000 for 5 years and have probably put over 2,000 hours on it and have had ZERO problems. It’s as quiet as a Honda (or better), is incredibly fuel efficient, and typically starts first or second pull any time of year (and it gets used in Canadian winters). I did a ton of research comparing the Honda and Yamaha before I bought it. Both were well rated but the Yamaha had both a fuel gauge and a fuel shutoff, neither of which the Honda had. Both are very helpful, especially if you’re genny gets put away for a month or two. I just shut off the gas and run it dry. I’ll buy another Yamaha if and when this one every dies.

Why I bought two 2000i: Reliability and value. One is over twenty years old and the other five. Neither has been in the shop. The elder has been through six hurricanes, (Typically 3-5 days without power.), and the other three. Also numerous lightening-related power outages of 4-8 hours. The reliability issue is based upon the need for continuous refrigeration. We have two refrigerators full of frozen goods and medication. The medication must be refrigerated. Combined value- thousands. I paid $1000. for the oldest twenty years ago. I can sell it on MarketPlace for $700-800. So my "over priced" 2000i cost me $300 plus five spark plugs and four quarts of oil.

You get what you pay for. Honda is a Honda motor, built by Honda. Runs at lower RPM to reach rated power, so is quieter. Has a top shelf inverter that is coveted by even the solar community that wishes they could source it separately. Hondas are known to accrue thousands of hours and still run strong. VS Generac, with a cheaper, smaller motor, louder, has to run faster to reach rated output. Not to mention aftermarket accessories and mods such as propane conversion kits and external fuel tanks. Honda's popularity brings those aftermarket possibilities. Don't get me wrong, I also own a Generac (GP3300) and it has served me well, but it isn't in the same league as a Honda.

Every small engine should have a fuel shut off. Running the carb dry will greatly reduce problems with occasional use. You can get away with this a couple of times, but the varnish will build up, and you will have to eventually tear the carb apart and clean it, a big pain in a small generator.

Whatever you have it plugged into would have one and nobody wants to sit next to a generator, they give a plug wrench because its impossible to remove the spark plug, Honda runs smooth while Generac was spitting and sputtering, 10db is 10x more intense, sounds like Generac revs higher (shorter engine life) Id rather buy once than buy twice.

I would love to be able to buy a couple hondas but $2200+ is a hard pill to swallow. I think for the money your better off running two of the generacs in parallel rather than running one of the Hondas at its very limit every time you want to run the ac. The Honda is definitely the superior machine though

Exactly for the price of the Honda it leaves a lot of options to buy two other gens or one big one. It just all depends. Thanks for watching 👍🏼😀

The Honda's price in the US is closer to $1200. I've seen it as low as $800. The EB2200i, which is the same basic machine with fewer bells and whistles is even lower.

Currently I guess it hard to even get a Honda eu2200i and most are $1199 now. It was $1099 but with everything stuck on boats what ever is out there is more expensive at the moment. Everything has gone up.

I bought a Generac GP5500, It failed in less than 10 hours. Customer service did nothing despite it being a 100 percent design flaw. Seal failure allowed light rain to leak into the gas tank. rusted out. carburetor stuck open and leaked all over my truck. Cost $400 to replace. They don't care about their customers. In the end the Generac will cost you more!!!

Yea I haven’t heard much good from them I try and steer people to Honda Yamaha and champion. How ever I do like the Genmax brands as long as customer service and warranty keep up. If they slide totally I’ll be saddened by that.

Could this Honda still run in very hot weather? Or will it shutoff? Here in Texas it can get over 105F heat index (the 'feels like" temp) even if the actual temp is 100F or less.
@johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends 2 жыл бұрын
It has a rated temp of 104f but it helps a lot if you keep it in the shade. That’s crucial. It will also depends on the load. Because when it’s hot out heat will rob power. So it may have been able to run a 13.5k ac unit with a little room to spare, but at those temps now it’s about max running the same unit.

If I were to spend a grand on a small generator, I would buy two of the Generac, it is a quality product.

I’m actually not found of these small generac units actually after having them for a couple more months. Louder then others and not as much power. Better units now available and the generac name is just a sticker. They don’t make it.

Under load the little 100cc in the Generac was screaming compared to the Honda. In a durability test, under equal conditions, the Honda will outlast anything on the market. If you blow up 2 p.o.s. Generics before I have to rebuild my Honda(something you can't do with a disposable engine) I'm still ahead with my rebuilt Honda. If you can afford the Honda it's the only way to go.

Don’t let yourself get but hurt by overpaying for a generator. I have over 9999 hours on a clone. Been running it 10-14 hours a day for 4 years. That’s 5 days a week. No problems at all other then a spark plug change and oil changes once a week.

Unfortunately they don’t actually make that unit. It’s just a contract to have a company make a small line for them. Same as craftsman and a few others. Certain companies actually have a line or design there product. Like Genmax and champion. Or Honda and Yamaha and a couple others.

Yes, most shop vacs all run on a 15 amp circuit. You’ll want eco mode off when using a shop vac as the draw will go up and down a lot when using it.
