It must be a wonderful feeling for the people who have worked long and hard on an aircraft like this if they have been there from the very beginning, to see the very first one on the very first test flight actually take off enter its element and show it can actually fly.

In 1961, on Saturdays, I was a salesman at "Honda, Santa Monica" in Santa Monica, Calif. It was at 10th and Wilshire Blvd, in Santa Monica. During the week I was an Engineering Writer on the Atlas "F" ICBM @ Vandenberg Air Force, Base, about 60 miles north of S.M. The biggest Honda we had was the 305cc twin cyl. ohc, 4 speed, motorcycle. I raced a 203cc Ducati at that time. When the Honda "WORKS" RC-161's showed up, the world learned something about what Mr. Honda was able to show the m/c world. It was a 4 cylinder, 250cc, double ohc, 6 speed motorcycle. Down the slight sloping,back straight away @ the Riverside, Calif. race track, my Ducati could do in the mid 70's. The RC-161 went by at WAY over 100 mph, and then shifted up another gear. Donnie Vesco was one of it's riders, and he said it had more acceleration than his Norton Manx (which was a Norton factory 500cc racing m/c.) A good friend, Ivan Wagar, was assistant editor of a brand new motorcycle magazine, "Cycle World." I believe he got a chance to ride the 161 one time and he said, "OH, my God, it's faster than my AJS 350-7R, (which was a factory 350cc racing machine). You knew the Honda was a racing machine when you looked at the tachometer because the needle laid at rest until the engine idled at 5000 RPM!!!!!!!!! When the Japanese engineers warmed the engine up before a race, we all stood near because they were going to show us something none of us had ever seen, namely, 11,000 to 13,000 RPM. That blew our doors off.

This aircraft is manufactured by Honda Aircraft at Greensboro, NC (GSO) airport. The initial prototype was built and tested at Mississippi State University's Raspet Flight Laboratory in the late 1980's. This prototype aircraft was the first Honda aircraft and the brainchild of the current Honda Jet. It features a composite laminar fuselage and metal wings. The over-wing mounted engine design reduces drag and increases cabin space.

You shouldn't judge a plane by its exterior look... it has a carbon fiber frame, which is more reliable than aluminum. And it uses slightly fewer gallons per minute than the Embraer Phenom 100. Being about a million dollars cheaper than the Phenom 100, it's not a bad deal at all.

Looks good, some original solutions (engines position), but i'm a bit surprised from the straight wings (like a cessna citation or the Yak 40): this is better for short runways but less good for high speeds ...

LOL. It does pretty nifty rolls and loops and stuff in FlightGear. Mind you, at full throttle and 20 deg descent from 30,000 ft, it will also go through the mach quite easily, which I'm not sure I'd like to try in the real one.
@joseph627010 жыл бұрын
WOOOOO Honda made an airplane!!!
@fixizin11 жыл бұрын
Not sure, but I'm thinking it reduces the "thrust pathways" in the overall structure; i.e. at the end of the day, the vast majority of drag is due to the wings. So instead of engines PUSHing the fuselage, and then fuselage pushing the wings, cut out the "middle man", just push the wings directly. The wings have to be very strong anyway. I'm thinking overall weight savings...? Real life (and req'd airframe inspections) will bear out whether this has merit.

Beautiful aroplane the arodynamics of the fusaloge and the winglets at the tips of the wings seem to do a lot to smooth the high and low pressures over the wings assembly. Does anyone know whe the materials composits are of this aircraft? Alunimun, carbon fiber a mix of materials externally and structurally?

As noted below, an airplane looking for a market, and the comment about the Eclipse 500, which is another VLJ, but waiting for orders to resume production last I heard. I have not heard about options for this HondaJet, unless is being marketed more in Japan, and in the US. Time will tell, but I think the Phenom, and the Cessna Mustang are pretty much locked on that market by both proven manufacturers.
