@@Astraeus.. Simple, the girls are the CPUs for the different game consoles and love/hate each other. Since the games originally appeared on the playstation 2 and PSP, the main CPU-goddess, Nep-Nep, represents the line of Playstation consoles. The Goddesses govern a planet called Gamindustri, but they have no clue how the people on Gamindustri feel about them so each time they do tonedeaf stuff, the people lose faith in them causing the mayhem repsonsible CPU-goddess to slowly disappear. Hijinx ensue and the goddess, and somehow also Gamindustri and the universe and anything else arbitrariliy important are saved. Most of the time, Nep-Nep is the cause of everything. One of the reasons why everything constantly goes sideways is because Nep-Nep has girl-crushes on the other CPU-goddesses who are, even after an eternal vow to never to go to war against eachother again, fiercely advisarial but yet also strangely intimately friendly. In the games, as in the light novels, the manga and the anime, the why and how isn't important at all, everything is Nep-Nep's fault all of time every time and blah blah Gamindustri console-wars. None of it matters, we're all here for Nep-Nep. XD (Which is also embraced by the creatives behind the franchise. The original premise of the franchise was lost after the first game.) As an aside, Chris Chan believes she's the fifth CPU-Goddess...
