Hi, Becky. I appreciate how candid you are when it comes to your struggles with IBS. It’s important when so many of us fall into the trap of feeling alone in that battle. To answer your question about remedies, peppermint tea is typically my go-to also. I also drink ginger tea to soothe my stomach and it seems to help. I’ve seen many docs and taken so many tests with my result basically being, “Yup, we think it’s IBS.” So I try to stick to low FODMAP diet + I’m careful to eat neutral foods like oatmeal, grits (I’m a southerner), honey dew melon, ripe banana, strawberries etc. in the morning before having lunch. A doctor suggested to me to never skip breakfast because when lunch rolls around, my stomach would attempt to adjust to the shock of having food in it after being empty for hours and end in digestive upset. From what I can tell, it’s solid advice although there are many days where just the thought of eating breakfast makes me feel sick. Here’s to quick recovery! Also, love your sweater. July can’t come soon enough.

I used to be extremely bloated too, sometimes like 6 months pregnant and be in pain. But my Iife changed when I decided to change my diet. I follow a hybrid diet of "SCD diet" and "Low Fodmap diet". I don't eat rice or pasta, a low carb diet, low fructose (only low fodmap fruits in small quantity), a lot of steamed low fodmap vegetables, and a vegetarian diet. I use supplements like" digestives enzymes" and "betaine HCL + Pepsin" with every meal. I think that some grains resist the digestive process in some people, and cause the bloating and the distention. I also take magnesium supplement once a day, and one drop of clove essential oil in warm water a few times during the week.

Btw I had the same reaction. When I go on vacation I’m okay but as soon as I’m back, my symptoms return. I’ve reintroduced fodmaps into my diet over a year ago and I’m mostly okay but I still have to watch out, on or off vacation. Stress is a way more big factor than I previously thought and I think that’s why I’m okay on vacation. I also can’t have a lot of insoluble fiber (like you, corn and lettuce types). I can have a little but even then it might not all agree with me. My fatigue when my ibs was terrible was also really bad and it also depressed me - but the depression stressed me out even more which is a bad cycle. I learned over time to try and talk more positively to my body and talk to it like it’s my friend and it helped. It’s hard sometimes especially when I’m missing out on something because of my stomach. I allow myself to wallow in sadness for half a day because it frankly does suck so I respect myself enough to let my emotions run its course. If I don’t, the pent up anxiety makes me feel worse emotionally. A little thing I’ve taken from my experience with IBS is that this is also a way for me to start getting to know my body more and to take care of it better. Before my ibs my stomach was great - I could eat pretty much whatever I wanted and had some gas, but it was never as bad with IBS. But now that I have ibs, I take the “bad episodes” as also reminders that I just need to spend some TLC on my body as it ages. I do something else to take care of it beyond my stomach - lotion my dry skin, clip my nails, massage my body, groom myself, let my mind rest and watch all the shows I want to watch 😉 otherwise I would be all out and about and not letting my body relax!

My IBS has been almost completly (In just the first 3 months, I also had almost instant relief after the first week.) removed going on the Carnivore diet, my flares are becoming almost non-existent and they last like a couple of minutes instead of hours. No more bloating and no more constipation, I can finally poop. No more hemorrhoids, no more straining and no more fissure, no more pain sweats in the middle of the night, no more neurotic anxiety episodes. I'm so fucking happy I just dove in and tried it, I was super scared but the more research I do the more I was supported. And even if the research was against it, my whole body is so much better now, me and every other person that tries it are getting crazy good results. I high reccomend beef (ideally grass-fed), salt and water for 30 days, like seriously, I'm so hapy I took the plunge. The one negative? I get depressed seeing people suffer with IBS/IBD when the answer is so simple. ._.

I feel you on everything you said!!! The fatigue, the gastro not really helping, the feeling of "what's the point of eating". I just had a 6 day massive flare up after eating at a restaurant that had never caused me problems and it was so hard mentally as well as physically. Apart from lying down with warmth and a blanket folded several times over my stomach nothing helped. I used to drink a lot of mint infusions to help with the pain and bloating but realized it made my gastric reflux worse so now I just drink hot water. I never thought I'd love hot water but I do! I cut out tea from my diet completely a year ago as I realized it was irritating and made bloating worse. I have found a probiotic that works but I have to keep taking it because the symptoms keep coming back after I stop. It does really help reduce bloating after 10 days of taking it but my doctor told me to try to take it for like a month or more and it's quite expensive. I have IBS-C and the probiotic is VSL 3 if you ever wanted to talk about it with a doctor. Also things doctors never tell you is it takes so much time to figure out what's causing symptoms!! I've been struggling for 3 years now and I still only learn now that X food causes X reaction and the reactions are many...it could be fatigue and/or bloating or cramps or extra constipation, it's just really tiring.

Update- I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and the doctor found nothing wrong. I'm so irritated 😡 but I think I've come to my own conclusion that my stomach issues are due to stress and not what I'm eating. And I'm actually annoyed because I suffer from frequent heartburn as well as upset stomachs and yet the tests didn't detect any damage from heartburn to my esophagus.

Hi Becky I struggle with corn too. Green peas and mushroom is also something which I always struggle with in digesting. I empathize with you on waking up in the middle of night due to gas smell and the sound. Its really annoying and I believe we just have to make peace with it. Thanks for sharing the video and please do not fall into the trap of feeling alone in this IBS journey.

I always feel better on vacation too! I think a lot of it is mental health related, at least for me. I don’t really eat healthy on vacation at all, definitely less healthy than at home so I think it’s anxiety/stress related

Yup, at times it is so frustrating and defeating. I'm so glad you brought up the fatigue, it can be debilitating. For me (what kinda sorta works) is digestive enzymes, probiotics (have to be low dose though), peppermint tea or gel tabs, digestive teas, intermittent fasting and low fodmap. And even then it's still hit or miss occasionally. It just sucks! Lets warrior on!

Thank you for this honest, down to earth video. I can totally relate to everything you have stated. Two of the worst things for me to digest are onions & garlic, cooked or raw. I have also just realized that raw broccoli/spincah/grape/sunflower seed salad is like a massive super charged laxative which makes me urgently need the loo at the most inconvenient time. Eg. I like to go for a power walk/run early in the morning but yesterday I had a dreadful attach of IBS and needing the loo so badly, I had to take a short cut home & barely made it to the loo. Just awful!! The thought of not finding a loo makes the anxiety worse, which makes the need to go 10 x worse!! It is definitely a mind of matter scenario, but the bottom end often wins unfortunately. Thanks again Becky. I hope you are doing ok during the COVID era.

My sister has the same issue with sugar it makes her extremely sleepy even a few days after she has it. She now has completely cut out all types of cane sugar and instead uses beet sugar, maple syrup or other types of sweetener and it has made a huge difference! It can be very annoying for her but it is totally worth it (maybe ask your doctor about getting tested for it that's what my sister did). Might be something to consider trying out. Thanks for always sharing your health updates with us really helps make me and others with IBS feel less alone in the struggle 😊 hope your stomach starts on the upward path soon!

As you I was diagnosed with IBS years ago, my conditions have not gotten better I was in a state of misery. I have seen several gastrologist of which NONE has been able to help me. Then when I couldn't take it anymore I decided to do my own research. I believe my problem developed from a combination of doctors over prescribing me too many antibiotics over my lifetime, too much stress and a handful of food poisoning cases. Which lead me to develop SIBO. I recommend for you to do research on SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth) I been dealing with it for over a decade. Cutting gluten, sugar, corn, eggs, dairy and any other vegetable or fruit that causes inflammation helped my symptoms, but I still have not been able to completely heal my self. Thanks for sharing your journey. ❤

I take Mebeverine (can be bought over the counter as Colofec, but the prescription version is long-acting). I take these in the morning and in the evening and they control the muscle abnormalities and I only need to boost this occasionally with buscopan. I take milk of magnesia as a laxative every evening. Just one capful - just under 20ml. This keeps fluid within the digstive tract and helps things move more easily. The key ingredient here is the magnesium. Those medications alone do not stop the debilitating pain. I take 25mg nortriptyline every evening. This is the most essential medication and without it I would not be able to function. It targets the neuropathic pain. Without it, any digestion is painful due to abnormal nerve reactions. I can now eat a diet that I am happy with and do not suffer daily debilitating pain.

I share your pain Becky 😡, it’s so frustrating. I saw a you tube video yesterday where the lady was having similar problems. She was very lucky to find a good doctor who asked her to give a stool sample as he suspected she had a parasite infection, after the tests confirmed it, she was given anti biotics and she is now fine. I wonder if all of us on here would benefit from this test 🤞

I feel your frustration. I have fructose malabsorption and I have to stick to a Low Fodmap diet. Sometimes I think I can be "normal" and nope. I do have anxiety about places to eat because is this going to make me sick, where is the bathroom and how many are there to the people here? I do have OCD also so I am on meds and therapy which has help me with my fears over my stomach. Right now my oven is broke :( and it is so hard right now so that is causing some anxiety. We are going on week 5 ugh... You are not alone on this journey.

Sorry to hear Becky. I relate to that misery...it's such a hard thing to feel you have to put up with. Funny you mention about the fatigue as recently; i had one extra scoop of mash potato..so like 2 scoops total and it was like i was drugged. I was in a total stupor almost. I blame hormones as well. What helps me with the stomach pains is to have things like hot tea and rice cakes...or sometimes chocolate as i find the high fat seems to help move things along if you know what i mean. So i go for chocolate rice cakes actually...and i found it helped. I used to find ginger tablets helpful once upon a time but i stopped taking them as they kind of repeated on me. The Fodmap 'monash' app seems to have updated some of its vegetables lately i noticed...so for example, courgette had a higher content than before. Hope you find an easy, simple, enjoyable diet that causes you no problems. Also..i find junk food seems 'safer' in terms of IBS at times than healthier foods so it takes so much exacting effort and urghh... we could do with a holiday from the whole mental burden of it..couldn't we!?

Heating pad or hot water bottle helps a lot with stomach cramps and with the gas, doing ibs stomach massage on your stomach helps move the gas if it gets trapped... I would also half fast for a couple weeks when things got bad by having a liquid diet of just broth, jello, and a safe protein or fiber rich soup... that way I can let my system relax and reboot for awhile... it helps it just take time for everything to work out of my system 3-6 days depending on the person.

hi, becky! sometimes food just doesn't seem worth it to me also. just when i think i have things figured out - things change, throwing everything into question. i wish there was an easy answer but there doesn't appear to be one. for quite some time by ibsc alternating with d has changed into straight, ibsc. i'm now taking magnesium citrate tablets daily and they are flippin' huge. just a reminder that i have gastropariesis too so it's not good to become constipated over a period of days. yes the bloat and the gas is terrible. i'm now having issues with hypoglycemia so my family doctor wants me on the Mediterranean food plan. protein and vegs mostly. i'm tired of all of this too. it's got to get better, right? hugs to you all! ~k

I am on the same frustrating journey. I saw a NHS gastroenterologist last year and didn’t really get anywhere with it (probably the same gastroenterologist you saw?!). Last week I paid to see a private gastroenterologist (at The Oaks, I would definitely recommend going there they are brilliant) it cost me £170 for an hours consultation which I really can’t afford but just went for it, she is now recommending a colonoscopy and endoscopy to rule out IBD, I am now crapping myself (pardon the pun!) the thought of those tests are so scary. I am the same as you, feel crap 99% of the time at home but much better when away, makes no sense. I too, am so wary of food, one day fine, eat the same foods a week later and feel crap. I used to live of Colpermin but now it does nothing. I have a cupboard full of IBS meds which don’t help after a couple of uses, grrr!! BTW, you look really well and glowing 😊

Awful what our IBS does to us ey :( Funny what you said about going on holiday - I only holiday in the UK (money haha!) but whenever I'm away my IBS swaps from IBS-D to IBS-C and far less pain than usual. Makes me wonder how much is stress and how much is environment. P.s corn is a nightmare for me, same with peas. I cut it out this time last year (including corn flour) and my symptoms improved. I've now reintroduced small amounts of things with corn flour and tortillas and can now tolerate some. The pain from corn last year was so so bad. Really glad I phased it out and reintroduced as I've found how much to tolerate. Feel you on the mental health side. So hard to keep positive when you're struggling to function. At one point last spring (during the corn pain period) my usual medication wasn't working and it was horrible. I spent most evenings on the verge of tears lying on the bed not wanting to eat.

Hi Becky Since following a low fodmap my symptoms have improved although I too get flare ups. I get so anxious about eating out though in case my stomach misbehaves so I try to avoid going out to eat at all. I also tried the Hay diet where you avoid eating protein and carbs in the same meal which helped but I lost so much weight that I gave it up. I think it's something I'll have to put up with but it sucks!!

Feel your frustration. I've been looking for an answer for just over 3 years and only recently found someone who would refer me to an allergy clinic. Currently working through a strict Elimination diet and I'm hopeful as the doctors at the clinic didn't think I was crazy. They think I may have an intolerance to salicylates which naturally occurs in many foods. Also testing for intolerance towards amines and glutamate.

I'm dealing with the same stuff. And thinking the same things. Same with corn, sugar, why eat?, stupid doctors: like I can't figure out how to take laxatives myself, like I'm not trying and all I need is for someone to get paid a bunch of money to give me a prescription for something I can get over the counter (sometimes cheaper), going out, greens, all of it. I recently had an ulcer flare up and spent hours researching that. Some stuff I found that can maybe help for both ulcer and IBS: collagen, bone broth (expensive but it helps a lot of stuff, I think of it as like one of those you are what you eat things, and not vegan, and hard to find without seasoning, try bone broth powder supplement tubs that look like the protein shake tubs), mastic gum, aloe pills, charcoal from coconuts, soil based organism or "sbo" probiotics, DGL licorice, l glutamine powder, juicing but only small amounts not a giant glass as a meal, vitamin C or echinacea or maybe? Eldeberry for your immune system, dandelion tea, blend your soups, anti-inflammatory cinnamon, ginger, turmeric, fennel, etc. Chew fennel after meals, or take a a spray or dropper like Urban Moonshine Brand's digestive bitters with tons of stuff that helps. One thing I read said that avoiding food and loss of appetite are a natural reaction but that it causes a bigger problem in the end. You can get black rice and add a couple of TBSP to your white rice for more nutrients and it'll turn it purple. Then a big thing for me was that there are a lot of vegetables and fruits that you shouldn't eat raw. As in blanch your spinach, don't eat it raw. Steam carrots, don't eat them raw. Cook your peaches and pears and such first. Also, don't eat nuts and seeds and make sure to remove them from vegetables, even cucumber. Another thing that helps is peeling things like cucumber and potatoes. I wasn't peeling my sweet potatoes and they were all of a sudden upsetting my stomach. I think that the things that will help the most are the collagen, bone broth and aloe. If you can heal and repair your digestive tract from the inside out you may be better off. Have you been tested for H. Pylori or (can't remember the name sorry) there's a condition where the lining of your whole digestive tract has been damaged. I dunno, I hope this helps. I know for myself that the anti-inflammatory things, the adjustment to how I eat things, and omitting things (sugar, caffeine, gluten, corn, spices, tomato, onion, garlic & pepper anything!) Has been incredibly helpful. I miss salad too. But I want my life back. Another thing is that you may need to be extra careful while you're having a flare up and then you can start introduce fresh veggies and fruit again. Also I don't know if you are but don't take NSAID or asprin. Trust me it's not worth it.

Definitely find a better gastroenterologist and also get tested for SIBO. I went through a two week regimen of antibiotics for SIBO then I’m taking prescription strength probiotics. Have you ever tried taking Activated Charcoal? It is supposed to remove the toxins from your system. So, for example, if I accidentally eat something that contained a High Fodmap, if I take the charcoal after the meal, it minimizes the side effects. It's not that expensive so it may be worth a shot.

I got into gardening and it took 5months to grow a red cabbage, I was so excited but after I ate that cabbage I had the worse flare up of my life up until that point. The gas literally wouldn’t move, it was stuck in there. I couldn’t poo or pass gas! I ended up getting an abdominal x-ray to rule out stool compaction. My GI dr said I’ll have to live on Miralax(a laxative containing propylene glycol which is not great). I take magnesium citrate daily and I do enemas now when things don’t want to move on their own because I can’t afford to spend days in bed though that’s all I want to do when I get a flare up 😣. I’ll be getting a colonoscopy hopefully in January just to rule out something more serious, though when I get a flare up I feel like I’m going to die sometimes just from that, it’s very scary.

Have you been tested for SIBO or bacterial overgrowth? I have an overgrowth problem and when I take an antibiotic all of my IBS symptoms go away. Unfortunately the symptoms return in a few weeks because the bad bacteria repopulates my gut. My doctor can’t figure out why. Other than prescription antibiotics the only thing that helps are herbal antibacterials, eating a very low carb diet and avoiding all fodmaps. I had 2 amazing months following low foodmap diet and some relief pills plus probiotics and everything was just fine. Then I bought some pills for IBS from my country and had no probiotics and I got again so bad. So heavily bloated that I just look fat all the time. Plus the cramps and the wind. I am lucky with my fiance though. I just have one question..... How will I survive the day i get pregnant? And no pills....

I think I might have ibs for a few years now,I’m 17 and I still have no clue on what I can eat.Dairy is a huge trigger for me most of the time but what’s weird is that some days I can eat without problems and other days I can’t eat even a goddamned peanut. On those days, every time I eat I get stomach pains and uncontrollable gas.It gives me anxiety to the point I’m afraid to eat In school!Id rather have a growling stomach than feel like dying of embarrassment. I already have low attendance and other health issues that are affecting school to the point they threatening to kick me out. :(

I get the same reaction to going on holiday or even just an overnight stay somewhere. I have Coeliac disease and IBS and normally have an annual check up with my gastroenterologist but so far in 2019 I’ve heard nothing. After that I see the dieticians but all she ever wants to do is sign me off. My gp is a waste of time and after he insulted me in his office by saying how sick he is of seeing people who allegedly have Coeliac I refuse to talk to him. He asked me how and when I was diagnosed sitting back with a smug expression until I pointed at his computer and said official diagnosis was 2015 and it’s on my patient records. He looked it up and went quiet. I feel I don’t get much help and I’ve been having other issues like bloating and lack of energy for seemingly no reason.

That's awful to be treated like that by a doctor. Their first rule is "do no harm". I have been treated poorly by doctors so many times that I finally had to admit to myself that I avoid going because of it. But it's MY health and MY body. I do what I can to advocate for myself and do everything right, like tracking things and writing down dates since that helps them. Please don't avoid taking care of yourself like I have. You can ask to see a different doctor and you can check if there's a patient advocacy or something else to file a complaint. They should realize it's not about them and if not, they shouldn't be paid so well to act like a smug jerk to someone asking for help. Enough people complain and they don't get paid anything to get in between a person and they're ability to get better

Hi Becky. Have you ever heard of/tried Atrantil? I’m not sure if it’s available in the UK, but a quick google search will bring you to the website and I’m sure it wouldn’t be difficult to find out if you can get it there. It’s a supplement created by a gastroenterologist - a blend of 3 herbs that is meant to calm down the GI tract while preventing the formation of gas by your gut bacteria. It’s been super helpful for me in controlling my symptoms (i was treated for a really bad case of SIBO, but even after that I would get extremely bloated, gassy, and terrible stomach pains after eating sometimes).

SIBO is one of those conditions that doctors do not understand, specially gastroenterologists. If you have SIBO, please find a good functional doctor who is knowleadgble in this subject. There is a lot of info on it. There is also a good group on facebook that is called SIBO SOS. The admin and host every year host a summit with lots of info and doctors. Please dont get discouraged. We can beat this.

I was diagnose with IBS type-C for around 28 years. It's very annoying. As long as I eat my meal I will feel cramping pain and difficult to digest. I went to see a doctor gastroenterology and was given zimor, Motilium, Debridat, Pilian and Ativan. It does not help. Have to take small meal. What should I do to get it better. Thanks

I have the same thing, if it's cramps in your stomach? You can chew fennel seeds after a meal or take a dropper or spray of digestive bitters. Some people chew anise, fennel, and Caraway seeds. I thought that the Caraway smelled too strong for me so I just got fennel and anise. I've been using the bitters and it's awesome. You can also get DGL Licorice for after meals. Mastic gum is supposed to coat your stomach and collagen, aloe and bone broth are supposed to heal your stomach and gi tract. Avoid sugar, overly sugary fruit, citric acid, citrus, tomato, pepper, peppers, nuts and seeds, spices, seeds in vegetables, vegetable peels, etc. Try your veggies steamed or blanched, and your fruit cooked. Avoid caffeine. This stuff is a long game. I thought I could have coffee because it doesn't upset my stomach in small amounts, but it's not worth it if it's making my stomach more susceptible to symptoms overall. Get tested for H. Pylori and peptic(bleeding) ulcer if you haven't already. Look out for warning signs with an ulcer. You can get rice noodles, and rice cakes(Korean "ttoek" or "ttoek guk ttoek" or "doek" and shiritake(I haven't tried yet) noodles online or in Asian grocery stores. My favorite are the Korean rice cakes. They're vacuum packed shelf stable, or refrigerated or frozen. I prefer the frozen right into boiling water. They're a god send. They feel like nothing in my stomach. As in no pain, no pressure, nothing. I also drink a few ounces of Pedialyte as soon as I wake up with stomach cramps. Chew exceptionally well. Don't eat late and sit up after eating for a long time. I also did a comment on the vid if you want to read that. I hope this helps.

Hi!! Oh, I want to ask so many things but now I'm going to ask just one of them. So what do you think, should I eat gluten free and dairy free products even if I'm not allergic to them? The test was negative for both.. I have had Ibs for 2 years and I'm following the Low Fodmap diet 3 weeks ago but it haven't helped much yet :/

What tablets have you tried apart from laxatives? From your posts on Facebook you do seem to make a lot of high fat and high sugar processed foods, gluten free, but not really very healthy. I’m sure you know that some anti anxiety or depressant tablets block the pain receptors and can help with the mind body link. I take linaclotide, you need to be close to a toilet for three hours, it works differently to a laxative and blocks pain , but it’s worth it for the pain free, bloat free nineteen hours remaining of each day.

J932 it’s about portion size of salads and veg and not doubling up on your fodmaps when it comes to foods that cause gas and eating low residue so the bowel doesn’t need to work so hard .... I know I’ve had the misfortune of having to try it every which way. But not everything works the same for everyone.

Hi Becky, I just wanted to say, I have been taking these pills for a month: magiro.no (it's in Norwegian, sorry about that, dont know if you have something similar?). Anyway, this changed my life! My stomach cramps is gone, and I visit the toilet like normal people. Still have to be careful with high FODMAP foods, but it has helped me big time! I really do recommend it, if you can order it from the UK. 😊 Hugs from the norwegian gal 😘
